Week 8 Picks

I went 4-2 Straight Up and 5-1 Against the Spread last week. That brings my season totals to 35-13 SU (.729) and 23-24-1 ATS (.489)

Yale -12 /12 vs. Brown

This should be a fun game, but the Elis will pull away late.

Cornell +9 1/2 vs. Penn

The Big Red will make this a game, but Penn should win it.

Princeton -16 1/2 vs. Dartmouth

The Tigers are just too good.

St. Francis -16 1/2 at Georgetown

The Hoyas got a good win on the road vs. Lafayette last week, but I'm not convinced they're on the mend for real.

Stonehill -7 1/2 vs. Wagner

I don't like Wagner on the road.

Morehead St. Pick 'em vs. Marist

I don't like Marist on the road.

  1. Columbia is a 10.5 underdog at Harvard today. I believe we can run the ball and control the clock (remember 240 yds on the ground vs Dartmouth). If we make the necessary adjustments, our DB's will play better. We cannot turn over the ball on special teams plays- period. If all this occurs, I see us being competitive and at least covering the spread. Who's with me ?

  2. Good first half for us. Terrible PI call.

  3. Way to go Lions! No way Poppe should be head coach. He is truly terrible.

  4. Poetic justice for the Lions. Victory owing to the Special Teams’ woes of others.
    To his credit, the Coach had the team ready to play.

  5. Fantastic win for the boys. And great leadership shown by the coaching staff.

    1. Huge Win. Congrats to the lads. Let’s finish strong. Brown looked abysmal yesterday but know their starting QB was out.

  7. Yes, Al still has both the magic and the guts to call for a 2 point conversion that won the game. Congratulations to Coach Bagnoli, his players and coaches on this great win today.

  8. Play calling continues to stink.... Defense played well generally but Zone pass d is horrible. How do you allow the teams each week to move the ball downfield at the end of the game? Look lost and confused and unprepared by everyone searching the sideline BY THE DEFENSE ...Up by 1 in last minutes of the game... Do we look to get into field goal range? No, three runs and then a punt. WE did kill some clock but how about a first down? Bagnoli in post-game? I was inclined to go for the tie and play OT! Al???? Earth to Al come in AL!

  10. To what purpose is all this acrimony?
    Yes we won. It always great to beat Harvard, especially in their house. Very satisfying to essentially knock them out of a chance for a title. But why be so nasty!
    People are sharing their observations. You do not have to agree, but why be so confrontational?
    Are you pleased with the outcome of this season?
    Do you believe the team has played up to its potential?

  11. Everyone should be happy with this win. Harvard is one of the most talented teams in the league. Feel good for the players and coaches today!!

  12. Happy for the boys. Happy for the team. Great game, but a nail biter for sure. I went to the game. Lions fans always show in good numbers. The D held us in the game. Two blocked FG? Amazing. Painton capturing a TD with defenders all over him. Outstanding. I wouldn't have gone for the 2 points after you already got the point after but had the opp on the penalty. I really didn't think they'd make it, but they did! Hallelujah!
    The Lions win, the Lions win, the Lions win!!!

  13. If it were earlier in the season, I would have been dead set against going for two points. Given how the season has turned out, I was okay with it in this case.

    Actually, there were three blocked field goals. the one the hit the upright was tipped by one of the Lions linemen. Grazed his fingers just enough.

    This is a great win for the boys. their psyche has been very fragile the past week or so. applaud the effort of the players and the coaches finding a way to keep the players engaged and focused.

    While this game was far from perfect, I am happy to see that there weren't dumb penalties and decisions that have been costly for the team previously. The punt return game has been much improved with the decisions to actually return a punt, or fair catch a kick-off. There is a lot to special teams and they have seemed to correct a few things.

    I was okay with the zone coverage in the secondary today. After the Yale debacle where they were getting beat on individual routes, I like the approach for the Harvard game. There were some soft spots that made Harvard's passing game a little too easy at times, but they tightened up when the needed to. They didn't get beat over top like Yale so nice adjustment by the coaching staff.

    Was it a perfect game? No. But it was a perfect outcome for this team. 6-4, 3-4 is very attainable for the team the rest of the way and that isn't so far off what we all thought the record might be. I think most of us figured 7/8 wins with 2/3 Ivy losses.

    There's still work to be done and now there should be some more smiles around Baker the rest of the way. two more wins will help set up things nicely going into winter lifting and the spring practice.

    Go Lions! #CharlieMike

  14. Wow! What a win! Can’t believe Murphy decided not to go for it with only one yard to go! And our D deserves major credit, holding Harvard to three points in the second half and not allowing any touchdowns off all the turnovers. Painton also came up big on our last scoring drive—that felt like a nice bit of redemption.

  15. Murphy and Bags have a mutual admiration society.

  16. The above comment about Coaches Murphy and Bagnoli adds zero value. With all due respect....well, I won't say it. Like most of us here, just celebrate this hard-earned, gritty, perhaps even unexpected victory.

  17. Caden will remember this game the rest of his life:

    * Needing to make a two-point pass and making it to Young to win the game, and did;

    * beating Harvard at Harvard;

    * sticking like glue to the program for three years without barely getting a snap (actually never getting a snap until Green went down--not positive about this stat, but if not absolutely correct, pretty damn close)

    * in effect, pulling Lions away from edge of the looming abyss.

    * Congratulations, Caden!

    Am so happy for the team and coaches to beat a very good Harvard team in Cambridge.

  21. Well done Lions! Much better game plan Coach Fabish. From a timing standpoint, excellent call on the 2 point conversion. That put Harvard on their heels. Some dropped balls, some missed assignments, the secondary needs to close the gap 10-15 yards off the ball and some fumbles, but overall, great improvement. Nice job at RB and congrats to the O-line and D-lines! Its a shame because we should have beaten Yale and Dartmouth... and we were better than Penn! Hopefully Bags will stay around another year and just make some internal shifts. GREAT WIN!!!

  23. Agree we did something we have not done sine. 1995! The long time fans expected more this year but we still have a chance to finish strong and go 6 and 4 and keep a culture of winning seasons going. Great win

  25. Not at all; a real, hard fought win in which we avoided any special teams disasters and in fact got great ST play.

  26. We beat a good team on the road, congratulations to the team and coaches. I've been disappointed in our season but they gutted this one out. Agree with the compliments to Bell here and on Voy. He stayed with it and was ready to play when he got a chance. Great story.

  30. He was a darned good QB in an elite HS conference in California, though a little “short” at 6 ft. Glad he stuck it out through the long COVID interruption. As for the coaching situation, I’m just happy we beat Harvard and
    hope the Admin will do what’s best for the team.
