It's been a very good 24 hours on the Columbia recruiting front as the Lions have snared two top quality players from the Northeast.

First came a Boston Globe All Star safety who was also highly rated by some ESPN scouts.

Kevin McCarthy is 6-1 and 200 pounds. He also played running back for Hingham HS last season and returned kicks.

Here's the ESPN scouting report from a camp McCarthy attended this summer.

The key sentence was:

"Kevin McCarthy really stood out as one of the better defensive backs and overall prospects at the event. Great size, range, athleticism and ball skills were all present."

Next up is New Jersey's Mike Cieslak, who may try to play baseball and football here at Columbia.

Mike chose Columbia of U. of San Diego.

So our list known incoming freshman has swelled to 10:

1. Jacob Ardron LB 6-1, 230 lbs. Diamond Ranch HS, Pomona, CA
2.Chris Cicilioni G/DE 6-2, 225 lbs. Valley View HS, Scranton, PA
3. Mike Cieslak LB 5-11, 235 lbs. St. Joseph's HS, Metuchen, NJ

4. Andrew Dobitsch, WR 5-11 180 lbs. Northern Valley HS Tappan, NJ
5. Michael Gerst, RB 5-10 190 lbs. Bergen Catholic Bergen County, NJ
6. Kevin McCarthy, S 6-1 200 lbs. Hingham, HS Hingham. MA

7. Cameron Molina, RB/LB 5-10, 185 lbs. Tuscarora HS, Leesburg, VA
8.. Daren Napier DT 6-4 275 lbs. St. John's HS Houston, TX
9. Logan Scott QB 6-2 180 lbs. Chaminade HS West Hills, CA
10. Austin Stock, C 6-3 270 lbs. Solon HS Solon, OH

The above list is again the number of publicly KNOWN incoming freshmen. Sources tell me we already have 20 committed recruits with room for 10 more this year.

I am also hearing reports that Chicago-area RB Mike Zunica has committed t o Columbia, but I have no confirmation on that.

Big QB

It looks like it's between Columbia and Brown for a highly-touted 6-5 235 pound QB from Lima, OH
His name is Seth Rosenbauer and we'll see if Head Coach Pete Mangurian's new NFL-style offense attracts this NFL-style QB.

Campbell Center Latest

Construction on the Campbell Center is ahead of schedule (a snow-less winter so far has helped), and WILL be ready for this fall according to a Columbia Spectator report.

Yale Staff Shuffle

I haven't seen any news about recently let-go members of the Columbia coaching staff getting jobs elsewhere, but just-fired Yale D-line coach Duane Brooks has just grabbed the head coaching job at Colby
College.

It's Mark Cieslak, and the Newark Star Ledger has him at second-team all-state non-public schools and second-team all-state overall. Impressive.

Yes it is Mark... Sorry about that, I will correct when I can. Also, Zunica IS now confirmed.

Also the reader who commented yesterday that Max Keefe has NOT committed anywhere yet was correct. I will clear it all up in tomorrow's posts.

NCSA Athletics Service reported yesterday Mike Zunica's commitment to Columnba. Zunica is an outstanding fullback prospect--fast and powerful.

Mark Cieslak comes from a great high school that also sent us star basketball player Noruwa Agho and running back Ayo O.

Seth Rosenbauer is perfect for Columbia, but so is the other outstanding quarterback from the midwest who will be vistiting Columbia soon.

Kevin McCarthy may be slated to play safety, but he's a tremendous all-around athlete who could also return kicks.

If Max Keefe commits to the Lions, we will have two very big and talented freshman safeties.

We are also recruiting an excellent cornerback from Brophy Prep, who will be visiting Columbia this week or next.

This Cieslak comes from St. Joe in Metuchen. Agho and Ayo came from St. joe in Bergen County.
