This Just In

This email was just sent out by incoming Athletic Director Peter Pilling:

Columbia Athletics has good news to share. We are writing in advance of the public announcement to let you know—officially—that Al Bagnoli, nine-time Ivy League champion and the all-time winningest coach in NCAA Football Championship Subdivision history, will be introduced as Columbia’s new Patricia and Shepard Alexander Head Coach of Football tomorrow.

Many of you know Al from his time at the University of Pennsylvania where he amassed 148 wins over 23 years—some of you played against him! With a winning percentage of .714 in Ivy League contests, Al is the second winningest coach in Ivy League history.

Beyond his many coaching accolades, we continue to be most impressed with his ability to mentor and motivate. Al is a teacher who prepares his student-athletes for lessons on the field and in life. We are grateful that he has made the decision to lead us during this important moment of transition. The fact that he is here speaks volumes about the University’s commitment to turn Columbia Football around.

Right now, we plan to have a press conference on Tuesday afternoon. We know this is short notice, but we hope some of you can rearrange your schedules to be with us as we welcome Al Bagnoli to Columbia. Thank you.

Best regards,
Peter

As you said in your previous blog, Jake, there have been many errors and missteps by this and preceding admins re sports. But now we have formal notice that CU has turned a major page.

I'm sure all of us here are gratified that this has happened, because even though there is zero guarantee of any kind of specific results or success from the Bagnoli announcement, this absolutely indicates a sea change in how things are done and what expectations will be. It's what we all have been hoping for.

I, for one, will be enthusiastically rooting for success. Not just for football, but for all other efforts for and improvements to our athletic program. So, kudos where kudos is due: Thank you and congratulations, President Bollinger and AD Pilling.

I join Big Dawg in his praise. Also, kudos to MBB for the first road sweep in many moons. Gotta love taking it to Yale especially.

Even if they end up a year or 2 without a winning record it couldn't be a better situation for the players with the culture change. I am betting the alumni outreach improves 100% as well. That was something Al was pretty involved in during his time with Penn. He used to refer to the Penn alums as "mafia" to describe the family-like relations, all in good fun of course.

Hope Bagnoli comments on the idiotic statement by Rick Taylor that we will not win a game next year.
Still waiting for Taylor's written report.

I can't wait to compare Al's starting lineups
for the first few games, compared to the last few of 14. Minus the grads of course.
