Fordham's Flash

Fordham was impressive in its 37-35 win over Army at West Point last night: http://fordhamsports.com/news/2015/9/5/FB_0905151554.aspx

RB Chase Edmonds was unstoppable with 110 rushing yards and 140 receiving yards out of the backfield. New QB Kevin Anderson mostly threw short and safe passes to Edmonds, but also found downfield receivers when it counted.

The defense was not as impressive, but still featured some good plays up front.

Georgetown and Wagner, Columbia's other two out of conference opponents, begin their seasons today at St. Francis and Rice, respectively.

The Wagner game can be seen live at 3pm ET on SNY.

Jake, is Fordham that good, or is Army that bad, or is it a bit of both? PS, I noticed that some of the Fordham starters are listed as "Gr". Does that mean graduate students?

I believe Edmonds is an NFL quality tailback. He's that good and that just changes everything. He was great last year, and now he's even better. To have a skill player at his level playing FCS ball is unheard of.

There's a perfect example of putting the best players on the field. If you have freshmen that can be productive in any aspect of the game play them.

Was at game, Edmunds is simply a wonder, strong, quick, and tireless. He has the whole package and a gentleman on top of it all.As I said in previous note, there may not be drop-off in QB position ,and they may be more explosive and quicker on line. It appears to be true. The receivers will take time to develop and can't possibly match the last two year's editions. Army does not have the great running back Maples any longer and he crushed them last year. Army has some talent, but very young. QB Bradshaw is an athlete, combined for close to 300 yards. Again Army is young,we have to see what they can do as they mesh. They have a tough schedule and will have a difficult season. If you can stop the run, they are pretty much cooked.Fordham is bigger than last year, also very young, lost 18 starters. They are sold and have excellent coaches. Believe Fordham's defense may be better this year on the line. Hodges is back and was fcs defender of year two years ago. Was all over the field made a big difference Friday night.Villanova will be a huge challenge next week.
I hope Columbia will develop this year and become a respectable program.
Believe they will do it under new management. I've seen some great talent and witnessed some wonderful moments there.

Fordham clearly, uh, "replaced" those 18 lost starters rather capably. I'd even say they successfully supplanted them.

Hmmmmm.....I think we all need to be realistic about the Fordham outcome. They were ranked #20 before the army win. Some of the over exuberant posters in the past two weeks need to reconsider.

That said, I will look for Columbia to score more and surrender fewer than in past two years and build confidence for a Gtown and Princeton win before homecoming.

Georgetown gave up 40 against St.Francis- this is a winnable game for Columbia !!

The big difference with Fordham's new QB Anderson is he is a dual threat. He's pretty accurate as well. There are just to many matchup problems overall. Columbia's secondary is going to be put under massive duress trying to keep up. I got the sense Fordham can compete with a lot of FBS programs. Army looked a whole lot better offensively than they typically are and Fordham handled them.

Sadly, looks like it is going to be a deflated opening day for the Lions, even though Fordham will play their entire bench.

This, of course, is Dr. M. Dianne Murphy's gift to us. When Fordham went scholarship a number of us wrote and urged her to drop the series immediately on the ground that they had crossed a philosophical barrier. This she refused to do. The last two opening games, in addition to being routs, ended those seasons and effectively the careers of two players who were of critical importance to us, deflated our guys, and devastated that year's team. While cooler heads have now prevailed and this will be the last year of the series, Al needs to come up with a great game plan since Fordham will seek to go out of the series with a flourish.

We stay healthy through Fordham, it's a win regardless of score.
Matching up against our toughest opponent sets the bar and preps the guys for the rest of the season. Just, please, no injuries.

Agree with Big Dawg. No injuries!

Platoon the QBs, run options....make their defense chase...but cannot find ourselves in repeated third and longs where the D tees off on the QB!

Not sure what to say on D...

What happened last season can't be undone as fans we can only hope that AL puts together a good game plan for the opener. They have there hands full with who there going to play.

Jake, you had once blogged that you had heard there was a bounty on Nottingham before the 2013 game which ended with a season and effectively a career ending injury. We need a game plan and blocking schemes which keep Mornhinweg on his feet and protected from cheap shots.

Whether or nor Fordham had a bounty on him, we had a fool for a coach who was determined to play a skinny OL and a drop back passing offense. What happened to Brett was more on the coaches than anything -- remember it was a fairly close game at half time (10-0 if I recall) with Brett engineering two long, clock-eating drives against what turned out to be, what, an 11-2 team? Fordham was playing hard and we couldn't protect our best player. Hopefully Al will be smarter and not drop Skyler back to pass exclusively. And hopefully a bigger line can avoid being trampled as the game wears on. But I agree with the poster above who said it might be a good idea to rotate QBs or pull Skyler if the game gets out of hand. Being healthy for Georgetown is much more important than the score at Fordham.

That aome say above, hey, we have a real chance to beat piddling Georgetown (as opposed to the "maybe" vs. Cornell) really isn't much consolation.

oldlion said...

Roar Lion remembers it correctly. It was a tight game at half time and Brett made some nice throws. He did give up an INT in the end zone in which our WR was outfought for the ball. We also lost our best DL in the first quarter. The second half was a rout. Fordham is also a terrible venue for visiting teams, with no visiting stands. This series can't end soon enough.

Congratulations to tijama cel. You managed to use "their" and "they're" in the same sentence and spell them "there" both times.
If only our FB team can achieve the same streamlined efficiency.

I went to the Wagner-Rice game. Wagner was obviously outmatched, but they seem to execute well on offense, though their QB was not very impressive. Their O-Line is their best unit, and they will use a weird formation where the tackles are split all the way out with the receivers.
