Columbia Game Notes

Dartmouth Game Notes

Leading Story Lines

1) Both teams enter this game on what has to be a multi-year emotional low point. The Big Green are in the midst of a four game losing streak, killing hopes of a third straight Ivy title. Columbia is coming off a humbling loss at Penn, also killing off its hopes of an Ivy title.

2) This is the first meeting between the two teams since last year's surprise 19-0 win for the Lions at Memorial Field on national TV. There will be some revenge aspects to this game on the line.

3) Both teams face intense scrutiny over their offensive units. Dartmouth was shut out last week vs. UNH, while a veteran Lion offense has underperformed despite some new stars emerging.

3 Columbia Players to Watch

-QB Joe Green needs to prove he belongs as QB1 after perhaps his poorest performance of his Columbia career, and a nice showing in garbage time by backup Caden Bell.

-LB Scott Valentas will likely be the CU defender who has to stop strong running Dartmouth QB Nick Howard.

-WR Bryson Canty is generally worth keeping an eye on whenever he's on the field.

3 Dartmouth Players to Watch

-QB Nick Howard still has the ability to take control of games, health permitting.

-DB Sean Williams is an exciting freshman who can disrupt a lot of offense.

-WR Paxton Scott has found a way to make an impact despite Dartmouth's offensive issues.

Anyone else surprised that Dartmouth is a 1 and 1/2 point favorite? One thing - Al has always done very well vs Teevens teams

Can we have a repeat of last year's game? I predict a bounce back and all the criticism of the offense pays off in BIG play changes!

Watching Princeton torch Harvard reminds me of how good we can be if we can generate more offense. We played Princeton a lot better than Harvard

As I posted earlier, Al is the college football version of Tony LaRussa.
Did the more talented team win?
Did the less disciplined team win?
Are any one of:
-an airmailed snap at the opponent’s one (how about that Wildcat?)
-a punt that yielded one yard
-a punt returner not standing clear of a punt they are not going field
-a punt getting blocked in your end zone
-shanking a less than 30 yard field goal to win a game
signs of a well coached team? I think not. How about all five in one game?
The team came out flat. It is clear they do not respond to their coach.
Hall or Fame, notwithstanding, what are his strong points?
Sounds the recently departed manager of the Chicago White Sox.

Wow. You must be a recent fan or parent

You are all such fair weather fans, not to mention a group of morons. Has this team underperformed? Definitely. Are too many mistakes being made? Absolutely. But criticizing Bagnoli? Are you kidding me? This team was the laughing stock of the entire league for sooo many years. Every other team basically considered themselves to be 1-0 before the season, just knowing they had Columbia on the schedule. This team was garbage before Bagnoli, and will likely be garbage again after he is gone. You’d all be very, very wrong to call for his ouster before he decides to go on his own accord. Dumbest thing I’ve heard in a long time.

In the same breath, are you saying any criticism of him for the team’s underperforming, yesterday’s astounding blunders, and a host of ill conceived coaching blunders at times this season are entirely unwarranted and undeserved?

Not at all, but the type of criticism and commentary that you feel the need to impose on him is ludicrous. You sound like a whiny baby that didn’t get the toy they wanted. I clearly said things weren’t perfect and mistakes were made, but the guy took a dogsh*r program and made it into a competitive, better than .500 team. He will leave Columbia (when he’s ready) with a winning record. Hard to knock him for that, especially the way you do it. You think you are an astute football mind, greater than the average fan, but in reality, you don’t know jack. The players and staff both like and respect Bagnoli, and THAT is what matters. Alumni are idiots wherever you go…can’t change that.

If you are indeed correct, and I have no reason to think otherwise, that the players like the Head Coach, there is no point in anyone criticizing him, or his staff.

It’s usually parents of players who get limited playing time, who are the harshest critics of the coaching staff
