Why Dartmouth Won
The Big Green capitalized on just about every crucial Columbia mistake, especially with two TD drives when they were handed excellent field position. The Dartmouth defense also bent but didn't break most of the day.
Why Columbia Lost
The Lions committed almost every possible special teams error you can make in a single game. They also failed to find the end zone on several golden opportunities in the 1st half.
Key Turning Points
-Columbia used all running plays to rumble 78 yards from its 21 to a 2nd and goal at the Dartmouth 1 to open the game. But then it switched to the wildcat formation, and for the second time this season the very high snap eluded RB Ty'son Edwards and the Big Green recovered.
-Midway through the 2nd quarter and with Dartmouth leading 7-6, a sack by Ben Corniello and Justin Townsend forced a Big Green punt, that returner Bryson Canty let graze his body for a muff and Dartmouth took over at the CU 30. Eight plays later it was 14-6 Big Green.
-Columbia mounted an impressive comeback to come from 24-9 down in the 3rd quarter, to tie it up at 24 with just over two minutes left in the game. The Lions seemed to have the game in hand after a brilliant strip sack by Townsend gave CU the ball at the Big Green 14. But PK Alex Felkins missed a 29 yard field goal three plays later. Then, Dartmouth moved the ball 65 yards without any timeouts to set up the eventual 32-yard game-winning FG with 4 seconds left.
Columbia Positives
-Townsend remains an amazing force on the D-line and will have a great career at CU.
-Columbia ran the ball well all day.
-QB Caden Bell played generally well in his first start, as he figures to start the rest of the season for the Lions because of an injury to Joe Green.
Columbia Negatives
-The special teams errors included that missed FG, a blocked punt for a TD, a muffed punt, a punt for NEGATIVE one yard, and a mishandled kickoff that forced CU to start at their own five (and ended with that blocked punt).
-The missed scoring opportunities were legion, and none was worse than the fumbled wildcat snap on the opening drive.
-Sad to say this, but Columbia simply looks like a poorly-coached team.
Columbia MVP
-Justin Townsend is a force.

DeleteWill never understand why we didnt run play clock to 0 and call time out after second down before ill-fated fg attempt. We gave Dartmouth 10 extra seconds there. They snapped ball on their game winning fg with 8 seconds remaining in game

ReplyDeleteI would agree, my son (former player) and I watched and both of us were left just shaking our heads. OC Fabish is still running the same boring and predictable offense and it’s sad.

ReplyDeleteIs there any more information that can be shared publicly on quarterback Joe Green's medical condition? Unless I am mistaken, nearly all we seem to know at this time is that Joe will be having season ending surgery for a shoulder injury. If that is the case, then I am sure all Columbia football fans will join with me in extending to Joe our very best wishes for a safe surgery and speedy recovery.

It is confusing, doesn't lead to a helpful dialogue when you don't have a sense of the poster's persona. ReplyDeletePlay calling continues to be awful ..and coaching is seemingly the problem .. Dartmouth had a running QB and a passing one ..two ..
We had Hollingsworth ..who was clearly not encouraged to stay ...He was a great running QB and could pass .should have not let him go...
A very talented player ..WE wish Bell the best ..and with some good coaching .
Ryan Young is sensational ..but we need to have some passing of course..so the defense doesn't just key on him of course..
So as I wrote before Luke is a large and physical tight end.. we should use him
And we did ..once .for a TD...
I was hoping for some creative play calling ..didn't see any ..
Maybe against Yale...our" kids " as Bagnoli calls them ..our exceptional young men are very talented...and very bright ...Fabish should not be micro managing the offense.
Coaching is important for sure..
I thought we would beat Dartmouth ...we should have for sure..
On the plus side, an excellent crowd at 11,023 on a perfect weather day. Good to see that kind of turnout. (Cleaning up all of the corresponding alcoholic containers left in the neighborhood was not fun but hey, it's only one game a year.)
ReplyDeleteDid not see the supposed return of the new university-led pep band. Did that not happen? I guess complaining about the Columbia band is a lot easier than actually making one from scratch.
I want to take a moment to say that as heartbreaking as that loss was, let’s not blame everything on the missed FG. It never should have come down to that point. Take away the bonehead misplays and mistakes from earlier in the game and we would have been cruising to victory.

DeleteThe only consolation from the weekend is that we got a commitment from the excellent BergenCatholic Middle Linebacker Malachi Mercer, who I had thought was committed to West Point. This is an instant impact type of player with lots of other offers.

ReplyDeleteExciting news about Malachi Mercer's commitment to Columbia. Talented, well-coached player from Bergen Catholic. No one has that program locked up. Columbia certainly gets its share of players from the top Bergen County Catholic schools--St. Joseph's of Montvale, Don Bosco of Mahwah, Bergen Catholic of Oradell and Paramus Catholic. Also, Mercer was not the only recent commitment of note, as Braden Daugherty, a 6'5" 230+ tight end from Dublin, Ohio,, a Columbus suburb, also committed. Daugherty has excellent 4.8,40 speed. .

Let’s not forget some bright spots from Sat game vs Dartmouth. Young and Giorgi both had great effort and long runs. Bell played well and was poised in leading the comeback after being down 15 points. And Townsend is a monster - another big play on the strip sack. One of several he has had on the season
