Many of us who are concerned and puzzled by the dropoff in QB Caden Bell's passing efficiency are starting to think it may mostly have to do with the terrible weather Columbia has faced in three of its four games. Remember that Bell played his HS ball and hails from the fair weather climes of Southern California.
Bell's five starts last season, each of which were better than any of his performances this year so far, were all in dry and usually sunny weather (it was overcast at homecoming vs. Dartmouth, but never rained or got very windy).
It seems crazy, but would it make sense to bench Bell in favor of Joe Green during poor weather games? Green is from the rainy Pacific Northwest after all.
This becomes a "right now" issue in many ways, because as of now there's a 50% chance of rain for this Saturday's Homecoming game vs. Penn. I think Columbia can win that game, but probably not without a more potent passing game.
Look, one of the luxuries of the college football roster is that you can put more players on it than NFL teams. That's especially true at home. The Lions should be ready to use that luxury and not let added talent rot on the bench.
I don't pretend to know what shuttling QB's in and out of games could do to continuity on the team. but right now Columbia needs to shake the passing game up, period.

Is Green hurt? OR is Fabish stubborn/stupid? How about some news?
Jake, your suggestion isn’t crazy at all. In fact, it’s the most logical next step, assuming Green is healthy. Before the season, I thought we had (at least) two excellent passing quarterbacks. In the span of four games, we’ve somehow gone from two to zero.
Not going to comment on any one's intelligence, but Green is good to go and has been for multiple weeks.
Mind boggling he wouldn't have been given some series in a somewhat meaningless non conference game where Bell was struggling-again.
How many QBs on the roster? 5,6,7? How many have played?
Green emerges this week, has a fabulous game, goes on to salvage the season and saves Fabish. Green leaves and we are stuck with Fabish and of course Engles
Rumor floating around that Green has a high ankle sprain.
AS others have pointed out, I think its more than a wet ball (which we will will likely see yet again on Saturday). My feeling is that the Oline, although still improving as a group, has not protected nearly as well as last years' more experienced line. Another is the play calling in-game strategy which should
be producing more yds through the air given our ability to run the ball, through
play action. If we dont open it up and pass protect up front soon we may not have any healthy QB's at seasons end! This is the critical week for Columbia football "23....
Jake, rather than having everyone speculate about the Columbia quarterback situation, why doesn't someone like yourself simply ask Coach Fabish what's up?
Amen. Amen. Amen.
How about someone on the Columbia Spectator sports staff?
“We play the personnel that we feel gives our team the best chance to win”.
Remember, the people in the Dark Ages, did not think it was the Dark Ages.
Maybe the interim head coach believes there is nothing wrong with the passing game, or any facet of his offense?
What is worse, is that maybe as part of Al’s “ stepping away” and his loyal Offensive Coordinator taking over, the “Interim Head Coach was promised that he would get a chance beyond this season? Men’s Basketball 2.0.
Afterall, are we nothing but a bunch of parents of disgruntled players, or people who never played, or maybe coached youth football?
What do we know about personnel, game planning, or play calling?
Respectfully disagree doc. The o line has been a strength and left tackle reminds me of Vikings player O’Neill
Very little.
It's a normal thought process. If I were one of the other QBs I would think "I can do what Caden has been doing. Anyone can. So why aren't I being given a shot? The coaches must think I really stink."
The cliche definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. My old HS football coach (cliche!) used to say there are two ways to go through a locked door: knock it down or find a key and open it. Fabish and D'Orazio seem to be trying to knock down a door. I would think they would be smarter (although in their defense they see all the players in practice and must be making decisions on that basis).
I hope for the best this week for all them, starting with Caden. I hope for a short, effective passing game as a key step forward. But hope isn't a strategy. I look forward to see how Fabish addresses the issue. If they stay with the same players and the same offensive game plan as in the previous games (like, why would opposing teams game plan for anything else?), I wouldn't expect much of of this season.
Daddy gronk strikes again!!!
Hard to concentrate on all of this when we are still reeling from the brutal slaughter by Hamas murderers of innocent people; even harder to concentrate on this in light of the gutless fence sitting and PC statements by so many Ivy Presidents; and hard to concentrate on this when so many of our bubblehead faculty and airhead students think it is just fine to slaughter Jews.
What did u expect? I think your expectations were too high. Wake up and smell the roses. These universities are shit-holes of wokism. Quality is long gone.
How true! I remember Mark Van Doren, an excellent teacher with a sense of humor. And the professor who taught the Shakespeare class and made us laugh throughout every class. It was llike Don Rickles teaching Hamlet.
Now we have HILLARY CLINTON
as a “University Professor”!?
How low can we go?
Bell fan here … we win and this group still trashes him. So disloyal. Green is not that great. He is not the savior all of you are looking for. Anyway since the university closed it doors today will they even play?
Agree 100%. There has also been the suggestion that our 3rd and 4th string QBs should play which is ridiculous.
Finally!!!! Someone who gets it! What coach in their right mind is going to pull up back ups who have not had a snap in a game in the middle if the season?!? And you have a qb who has won some games yet everyone still complains and moans and cries. Its so old!!! And annoying. Green came in during covid in the portal never took a snap in a college game before columbia. Get over it!!!!
If it ain't broken leave it alone. If you can't see that the passing game is broken, I suggest a look at the Ivy stat sheet and see what team is last. You probably think that Jim Engles will win the Ivy this year
