A Kafkaesque Lesson for Jon Poppe

Everyone who knows new Columbia Head Coach Jon Poppe also knows he's a very energetic man on a mission. I'm excited to see what his energy and experience will produce for the Lions in the years to come.

But one of the things Poppe is going to face, like every CU head coach before him, is a chorus of naysayers and scolds who stand in the way of any new approaches and even calculated risk-taking.

I know this is a football blog, but it's also an IVY LEAGUE football blog so I ask you to indulge me as I use a hardcore literary reference to make my point.

One of the most important works for any goal-oriented person to read is the short story "Before the Law" from Franz Kafka's book, The Trial.

I'm sorry if I spoil the story now by saying that it is an elegant narrative explaining how we often handcuff ourselves by listening to the naysayers and scolds in life who are either ignorantly or intentionally providing us with incorrect advice. These are the voices who play a huge role in impeding bold changes, even for the people or organizations who most need that change.

As I've been saying here all year, Columbia Football is not in need of a significant rebuild thanks to what Al Bagnoli, Peter Pilling, and many others have achieved over the last eight years. But there is still bold innovation needed, especially when it comes to Columbia's current recruiting needs in the context of all the new rules in place for college football.

To be more specific: COLUMBIA NEEDS TO BRING IN A QB!!! And Poppe is going to need to ignore any weak-minded or weak-willed naysayers who may discourage him from taking some bold steps in the face of that need.

For example, you know there are going to be people who tell Poppe NOT to aggressively explore the transfer portal, NOT to scour the country for guys with preferred walk-on offers from bigger programs, etc.

One prime example of the former is a recent Cardinal Hayes grad who got offers from Princeton and other Ivies, chose an ACC program instead, but is now in the transfer portal. I can just hear the usual naysayers telling Poppe not to bother with someone who already rejected the Ivies in the past. That's baloney of course.

All head football coaching jobs are hard, but it isn't the workload that waters down the passion of obviously passionate coaches like Jon Poppe. Like a challenging workout, he'll likely be even more energized by that work.

I also don't think he'll be overly discouraged by honest criticism of what happens on the field, whether it comes from the fans or anyone else.

But our job as fans is to make sure those discouraging, scolding, and narrow-minded voices stay as far away from Poppe as we can keep them.

I wonder what the “you should be content with mediocrity because it’s almost impossible to do any better” crowd will say after Poppe has a winning record in his first season. I’m excited about CU football! And the writer referenced in Jake’s post is one of my faves!

Strawman much Francis?

A few years back there was a slew of QB injuries. In fact we almost ran out of them. How did Al respond? The next year he had 6 or 7. Last year Fabish had 8! When Al had so many, how many played? Not too many. Last year, despite the lousy record, only 2 played major minutes. We must have how many returning without much experience. Way to go Mark? I think that the mishandling of the QB situation has been endemic to the program. How many came and never played? Here we are again seeking a QB! Jake is spot on again. I would first look at the returnees, choose 3 and look in the portal for 1
.

Do you need 8 QBs? Rather have 8 beefy big DLs all over 285

Unless you are Mangurian and go with 235 pound DLs

This is why I never understood our motto "Charlie Mike" for "Continue Mission". What's the alternative, don't continue??? Also continue what? After watching a year I believe "Charlie Mike" stands for "Continue Mediocrity".

We all know what the definition of insanity is, as far as I'm concerned throw all the old traditions/way of doing things out the door if they don't lead us to a Championship, today is a new day.

Agree on the Quarterback comment, we may very well have a bunch on the roster now who could do the job but were never given a chance to show it. Don't tell me Coaches know from watching practice, none of them could have been worse than what we saw. Should have started a new QB each game until we had an Ivy League win.

Well said 😀

Nobody has ever said to be content with mediocrity. Many have certainly said that CU needed to somehow become at least mediocre after almost 100 years of futility. You need to pay attention.

Has anyone read that ridiculous report Mango prepared (about his plans for CU football) when he applied for the job? It’s still on the Internet somewhere. I’d even be tempted to laugh about it if things afterwards hadn’t been so tragic.

Francis Jackdaw said...

I’ve paid plenty of attention, thanks very much. So you’re just going to conveniently ignore all the people who wanted to make Fabish the head coach after this terrible 3-7 season? If that’s not being content with mediocrity, I don’t know what is.

Anonymous said...

Asks the Fabulist, lol. Thank goodness we didn’t reward mediocrity when the season ended. Proud of Pilling.

Hwere's hoping that Coach Poppe first commitment is Henry Belin IV, the Duke quarterback who just entered the Transfer Portal. Beiin is a big, talented quarterback who knows his way around Baker Field having played for nearby Cardinal Hayes. Incidentally, Henry's younger brother, Rich, quarterbacked Cardinal Hayes to the New York State Championship last week. Rich, only a junior, has already been offered by several Ivies.

I agree. The transformation is going to be remarkable!

Bye-bye Marky

No reason to continually drag down Fabish. It's immature and unseemly. Have some class and act like a pro.

Anonymous said...

If you want Columbia to be a 1st class program that wins a title, you need to act like an adult too. Stop with the Fabish bashing and be a first class supporter. Get it together.

Anonymous said...

Does Baby Gronk have an extra year of eligibility due to the Covid year? We could really use him next year

Anonymous said...

"Bye-bye Marky"

Typical classless Columbia football fan. No wonder you'll never win a championship...sad.

Anonymous said...

Fabish 3-7 with all that talent?

Anonymous said...

Poppe first year 6-4?

Anonymous said...

And you with no class.

What's the point of this comment?

Anonymous said...

The point is : Speculation as to how many games we win in 24. Is 6 realistic? Either 5 or 6. Do you want to speculate or are you a big believer in Bagnoli's 2 yard "Safe pass?" A/K/A the Bubble Screen, modified by Fabish into The Even Less Successful Bubble Screen

Don’t let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya.

Anonymous said...

Did we hurt someone’s feelings? No wonder you’ll never win.

1. Lay off Fabish, good guy who also had a few bad bounces of the ball 2. Nice farewell on X from Joe D, who hopefully lands on his feet 3. Do we have an assessment of the QBs still on the roster? 4. We need more depth at the RB, including a power back 5. Should Jack S. Be moved from back-up rover to strong safety since CJ Brown said he is coming back? 6. If Justin Townsend has NFL aspirations should he be over to an inside LB position? 7. Is Jon going to coach the DBs himself? 8. We need taller CBs. 8. Any other assistants being asked to stay?

Anonymous said...

Guys, let’s not say a single negative thing about Fabish. He and his supporters aren’t bothered by their awful results, but they are bothered by anyone’s mentioning how bad the results were.

Anonymous said...

Baby Gronk….does not have eligibility remaining. Thank god. Worst CUFB experiment in a long time.

Anonymous said...

Anyone with a brain would say 4 to 7. Something like that. It's not an interesting topic. Your constant talk about Bagnoli is also idiotic. It makes you seem deranged.

Anonymous said...

Agree. Just read the comment again. The guy can barely write. It's nonsensical.

Anonymous said...

"Fabish 3-7 with all that talent?"

What talent? lol

Anonymous said...

Whoever wrote this is a jackass. Get your head out of your ass. There is talent on the team and they will have a good 2024 season.

Seriously doubt Poppe brings in a QB from the portal.

I'm not a Fabish fan. I'm a Columbia fan and want to see the team do well. It's also agree that it's not a good look to constantly post immature, negative comments about Fabish. It's lame. Imagine if a recruit or his parents reads it. It doesn't portray a loyal, mature and intelligent fan base. As another poster said, be a pro.

At least 2-8

Poppe is hiring the U. of New Hamsphire special teams coordinators for the Lions.

I think there have been too many nasty grams lately-do we really need to insult each other? How abut showing the same courtesy that we would extend to each other if we were speaking in person? Just a thought, and directly to the small minority who seem to thrive on this sort of anonymous language.

Anonymous said...

Right on

Francis Jackdaw said...

Great post!

Anonymous said...

There absolutely was good talent on the team. As in, one of the better coaches in the league (Reno, Murphy, Surace) would have won 6-8 games with this team.

Anonymous said...

Even Joseph Djgashvilli agrees

As in Stalin?

Stalin didn’t live to see CU football win an Ivy League championship.

Going to Butler University. Huh?!?! Bad trade kid!

Anonymous said...

Where do you see this info please?

Anonymous said...

"Going to Butler University. Huh?!?! Bad trade kid!"

It's just an offer be's not re-committed anywhere

Anonymous said...

Yes, on the offer from the Butler Bulldogs. Do a quick search, and you will find his posts on X, formally known as Twitter. "Due to the recent coaching changes, I am decommitting from Columbia University and re-opening my recruitment.” Sounds a bit lame to me, but that’s not my decision. Butler, East Carolina, Columbia? I have always found it interesting when Jake or the athletic department reference offers from other schools. Frequently a wildly broad range of admissions standards.

Defensive back coach, Andrew Kukesh, picked up a solid commitment today from Carter McCray, a 6'0 185 cornerback from Cornerstone Christian High School in San Antonio, Texas. McCray is a talented 4.45 40 football player who also happens to be the Texas Private School champion in the long jump (23'5"). I would not be surprised if Kukesh picks up another commit in the Rio Grand Valley before he heads back to NYC. Or is his next stop in Louisiana?

Anonymous said...

Good job Coach. Next, head to Dallas, Houston and Louisiana.

Anonymous said...

Early admits were sent out this week. How many went to recruited fb players who have committed? Anybody know if the campus protests impacted the numbers?

Anonymous said...

ED applications were for 11/1. A football player who had gone through the pre read earlier and was told he was in and committed to Columbia would have likely completed their application. I doubt a single ED football recruit was influenced by politics. At Columbia or any other school.

Anonymous said...

Good; where do we stand on total number of recruits?
