6-1, 220-pound LB Christian Gonzalez from Bergen Catholic HS has committed to Columbia.
He also had an offer from Lafayette.
According to my LionFeeders database Gonzalez will be the 16th Bergen Catholic grad to come to Columbia Football. He was also join BG grads Christian Carti '27, Pat Colicchio '25, and Malachi Mercer '27 on the Lion roster.
So the list of known commits grows to 12:

2) Liam Donagher DB 6"2 200 lbs. Grafton Memorial HS/Choate (PG Year) Grafton, MA

Need Big DLs
And a power back
We have outstanding DLs
Serious question: would it make sense to move Justin Townsend to middle linebacker?
Yeah because that has been a real weak spot last 2 years. Come on guys think a little, please
"And a power back"
And a partridge in a pear tree.
Our defense should be outstanding again next year no matter what position Justin Townsend plays. He's a terrific football player, but at this time, I suspect that the new coaching staff is concentrating on the offense where the Lions clearly need improvement. We will have size and experience on the offensive line and several outstanding wide receivers, but only one experienced running back and not a single experienced quarterback.
Qb is wildcard. Hearing some very good news as to returning seniors.
Can you enter the news re returning seniors?
Can anyone tell us the type of offense run by Coach Poppe at Union?
Nothing definite. But i believe there are a lot that are seriously considering coming back. Of course, other offers can change those thoughts. We will start to know for sure when spring enrollment finalizes (early feb I believe)
Cole Freeman has committed to Columbia. QB position is in good hands.
Can anyone tell me who will replace Baby Gronk? Big shoes to fill
That's great news. I'm pumped. Go Lions!!!!!!!!
Exciting news about Freeman. Has Freeman's commitment been confirmed publicly? Using Coach Poppe's words, Freeman and the Lions have the opportunity to make "History."
CJ BROWN said on captain’s corner that he is coming back, and Pat P said that he is actively working on others—Is Giorgi a possibility? Roussos? Hughes?
Re Townsend, if he wants a crack at the NFL I suspect that he would have to become an inside LB. I know he’s been great at DE, but it’s just a thought.
First guys have to want to come back. That takes a certain critical mass of players, kind of like “lets get the band back together one last time”. It also takes a good culture (I may be premature, but my sense is that Cornell will lose many more transfers than does Columbia).
That cultural component will be due to: the fine work done by Bags/Fab in building a solid culture, a quick hiring decision by Pilling and what has so far been a positive first impression/effective recruiting effort by Poppe. It does indeed take a village sometimes
Of course, the above can all be offset by a 2-year scholarship that would provide a paid-for graduate degree. Time will tell
Well said “First Guys”. Not ready to anoint Freeman as the QB savior, but apparently our NJ contingent is. Lots of football to be played between now and ‘24 season. We may have QBs on current roster that fill the bill. Expect some good competition this Spring, Summer and Fall camp.
Why haven't they announced Seitu Smith as the new OC yet?
An orange traffic cone
Is he any good?
Is who any good?
Freeman
Check his stats at Northwestern. Walk-on. Three games; all other QBs were injured. 45% completion rate on 45 attempts for 187 yards, no touchdowns and 5 interceptions so over 10% of passes intercepted. Reach your own conclusions.
We’ve had BC guys on the team in the past, still haven’t won an Ivy League Championship since 1963. In my opinion the squad needs more hard nosed midwestern players, why have we not tried to get the star running back out of Ohio to recommit?
Also Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all you Lions!
Freeman is a stud and let’s get ready to rumble. And I like Northeast studs. We got this.
Come on, man. Get it together.
I like players from Texas and Florida who seem to be the best. Also Long Island seems to be under recruited. Coach Bagnoli in his prime, got mostly recruits from right around Penn, NJ, NJ, and nationally too.
NY
NJ is generally regarded as playing a higher level of HS football than LI. Northern NJ has a couple of Catholic high school powerhouses which cast a wide net in recruiting 9th and 10th graders from the area.
You like studs
Imho those NJ Catholic schools get seriously over-recruited. Not talking about their top talent, but a lot of players get offers based on playing in the self proclaimed best league in the country and never really pan out in college.
In any case, I think new staff should concetrate on recruiting across entire country. Maybe Poppe can break the country down into several regions and then assign one coach to focus on each region.
What would Patrick Mahomes say? Best high school football in the country is in …………..wait for it ……… Texas. He has a high level of credibility - much more than anyone on this blog, including me!
As noted earlier by Knight
"In any case, I think new staff should concetrate on recruiting across entire country. Maybe Poppe can break the country down into several regions and then assign one coach to focus on each region."
I think the coaching staff knows better...lol
Would much rather get more kids from public schools from TX, GA and FL. Play much stiffer competition and play with an edge
I really like the players from places like Montana and the Dakotas. They all have a certain moxie that translates to winning football. I hope Poppe is taking notes on everyone’s geographic preferences. Sage advice here on the unmoderated blog of champions!
Dude, sarcasm is not your strong suit. Have you been drinking early this morning? You have obviously never seen high school football played in the South. Penn, Dartmouth, Yale, Harvard recruit these areas so much better than Columbia.
Dude, understanding sarcasm may not be your strong suit. What point was the anonymous commenter making? Was it a commentary on where the best high school players are found or was it poking fun at others here who were providing their sage advice to coaches as to where they should be recruiting?
Btw, all you championship or bust folks here want to really assist? Pony up money for NIL, provide compelling internship opportunities and get involved in mentorship program.
The coaches dont need help on where to fish, they need financial and other support to land the best fish
Agreed
I hear a number of mega-donors to Harvard & Penn might have some spare change these days. Anyone who knows them might make some inquiries and a compelling case for Columbia, earmarked for Columbia athletics, specifically football. Outta my league. HaHa!
Our defense will not be as stout as last year. We’re losing Spachman, Knox, Corniello, and Autrey on the DL.
Oh Ye of little faith
Defense will be outstanding. A majority of those players will be back and they have the best players in the league
Let's get more beef eaters
I think this Townsend kid is special. Love watching him come off the edge
"A majority of those players will be back and they have the best players in the league."
I think Yale and Dartmouth would beg to differ.
