More Harvard Angst

The latest online edition of Harvard Magazine  continues the recent hand-wringing in Cambridge over the hiring of Andrew Aurich as the new football head coach.

It also contains this gem of a comment, Lions fans will love:

"On February 11, the Harvard Crimson published a scathing critique of the choice. Passed over (among others) were internal candidates Joel Lamb ’93, who was Murphy’s assistant head coach-quarterbacks, and Scott Larkee ’99, assistant head coach-defensive coordinator and linebackers. (Another onetime potential choice, former assistant coach and special teams wizard Jon Poppe, is the new head coach at Columbia. Watch for the Lions to get good, and fast.)"

We'll see.

I agree with the excellent comments of the recent poster that there is no reasonable basis for Pilling to retain Engles for still another year--lousy record, lousy game coach, however defined, etc., etc. It seems to me that the only possible basis for Mr. Pilling to retain Engles for still another year is the quality of the projected recruiting class and whether Pilling lacks confidence in his own ability to hire a replacement coach immediately who can persuade the incoming four or five recruits to attend Columbia, My opinion is Pilling is quite capable of hiring an excellent young basketball coach similar to his outstanding selection of Coach Jon Poppe. Staying with Engles would be a disaster for Columbia Athletics.

Gocolumbialions is touting the incredible achievement of securing ONE HM ON THE ALL IVY MBB TEAM! THEY ARE ACTUALLY TREATING THIS AS A GOOD THING.

So you are suggesting that neither the President of Columbia University nor the Athletic Director would read a letter from any of the fans on Jake's because we are nobodies." That 's certainly not my experience. I'm definitely a "nobody" and yet I can honestly say that over the years I have written numerous letters to various Columbia Athletic Directors or simply called them on the phone or met them at Baker Field or Levien Gymnasium, and was always treated with the utmost repect. and Several of my ideas were adopted by the Athletic Administration. I also have communicated with Columbia coaches in various sports including basketball, football, baseball and wrestling. Finally, like many Columbia alums I have had the pleasure of meeting in person several former Presidents of the University at Homecoming and numerous other events. I assume my experience is shared by many other Columbia Fans. True, I have never met or spoken with Coach Engles, but that's mainly because I have stopped going to the men's basketball games because I am tired of all the losses

This old "nobody" had no difficulty talking basketball with the great Jack Rohan. Maybe Engles and Pilling should try to communicate better with the alumni.

Kyle Smith and his staff were always friendly to this "nobody." He invited me and members of my family to various basketball team functions. I have never hear from Coach Engles or anyone on his coaching staff.

We don't even know what went into the recruiting of the incoming class. Given that Engles has shown no particular interest or skill in recruiting during his tenure at Columbia, the incoming class was probably recruited primarily by one of his assistant coaches. For all we know the incoming players barely know Engles and committed to Columbia because of the efforts of that assistant. They may all be delighted to have him replaced with a more successful coach. Not only that, but Engles seems to be dogged by injuries to players, transfers and players leaving the program. That could get worse with the new recruits. For example, how is Engles going to mesh his three returning point guards with the two newcomers. Assuming the fifth man is out, you still have only 40 minutes to divvy up amongst the four remaining point guards. It is important to remember that it's always a gamble whether first years work out. Our three man freshman class had no impact whatsoever on the team's success this year. So persons who claimed last March that we shouldn't terminate Engles because of his talented new recruits proved to be dead wrong.

What was your impression of him when you met him?

So the one or two diehard Engles supporters are gloating about our so-called improvement this year and perceived higher finish in the standings next year when our best player, de la Rosa, barely makes Honorable Mention. The continuing dialogue with the Engles supporters is based upon their proving that we improved significantly this year. De la Rosa's Honorable Mention award is not going to cut it.

Can someone please list the names of all the good recruits we have coming in?

no joke, it's my opinion

Someone recently posted Engles won - loss record as 59 -133 overall (.307) and 23-73 (.239) in the Ivy league. Maybe I jotted down the information inaccurately, but shouldn't the Ivy League games add up to 198 (7x14). For some reason I cannot find Engles cumulative stats on the Columbia Atletics Website. His first year is missing and his total wins and loses are not shown anywhere.

Fire the coaches

Bluto will you be happy if the Lions go 1-13 or 0-14 in the Ivy League nest year, but win three exhibition games against D III opponents and about 2-6 non-Conference games? That seems to be the way the 2024-2025 season is shaping up for the Columbia Lions Men's Basketball Team.

The team looked very good at times, not so good at others (when the shots aren't falling it's hard to win). It was bad luck losing our best player for the first two league games.

Jerry Stackhouse and Juwan Howard, both fired today. Why is Engles less deserving of the same fate?

By way of comparison check out the outreach of Brett Boretti. And he doesn’t pull his punches. He has made it clear that in our early games our pitching and field in have been subpar. He doesn’t try to hide.

Fire WBB coach. Not a proven winner. Where is Pilling on this?

We are losing our best front court player. We have some nice guards but are lacking in front court talent and size. Remember the definition of insanity.

Agree with the last poster on his one line summary of what Columbia Men's Basketball Fans can expect next. However, I do need clarification from him regarding the need to "remember the definition of insanity." Please help me there my friend.

Good to see some of the funny comments on this Board regarding the men's basketball program's weird situation. I particularly liked the one urging Pilling to terminate the WB coach because she wasn't a proven winner. Very Clever.

One definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Albert Einstein is commonly regarded as having coined that expression.

I will laugh again at this comment when, after two more years, we still haven’t sniffed the ILT.
