Weekend Roundup

In addition to the Ivy preseason poll results, we had some news this week:

Dante Miller

-Dante Miller '22 got significant playing time in last night's NY Giants preseason opener vs. Detroit. Miller had 63 yards on 12 carries, a nifty catch and run on one pass reception, and the local TV announcers discussed him at length. It's still not clear if he will make the team, but his chances seem to have improved after last night.

Jared Richardson

-This news technically came out a little before this week, but Columbia will face six players who made the STATS FCS preseason All America teams this coming fall. (no Columbia players made the teams)

They are:

1st Team: Lafayette RB Jamar Curtis (Curtis rushed for 145 yards and 2 TDs vs. the Lions in Easton last year).

2nd Team: Penn WR Jared Richardson (Richardson had 7 catches for 91 yards and no TDs vs. the Lions in NYC last year)

2nd Team: Brown DB Isaiah Reed (Reed had 3 tackles and 2 pass breakups vs. the Lions in NYC last year)

3rd Team: Lafayette OL Ryder Langsdale (Lafayette had 243 net rushing yards vs. CU last year, but also allowed 3 sacks)

3rd Team: Lafayette DB Seiku White (White had 2 tackles vs. CU last year)

3rd Team: Dartmouth PK Owen Zalc (Zalc hit two 47-yard FGs vs. Columbia and was 2-2 on PATs in Hanover last year)

The Ivy League will hold its virtual coaches news conference this Monday August 12th at 11am. I think people will be impressed by Columbia Head Coach Jon Poppe's debut. Senior LB CJ Brown and WR Bryson Canty will join him. It should be noted that neither Brown nor Canty were guys I expected to be back with the team this year. so perhaps their very presence is a major feather in Poppe's cap already.

Here's the link to watch the news conference via YouTube.

You didnt think Canty was going to finish his degree? He is a 4th year

I am predicting a very good year for Canty, and a bounce back year for Libman. Plus I like our depth behind them at WR. Larsen and Miller should be good TEs. So with decent QB play and decent pass pro we should have a good pass game. I like our two RBs as well.

Coach Poppe’s comments from media day are on you tube—nice job

Positive comments about Oline. If true, and not just coachspeak, it will take a lot of pressure off whichever qb gets the job

QB looks like it’s still wide open

Coach Poppe mentioned three quarterbacks during the Ivy League Media Day video conference --Chase Goodwin, Cole Freeman and A.J. Simpkins. So those three are probably the leaders and the likely three deep for opening day.

Right, but the fact that he didn’t clearly indicate who was the top QB or even who were the top two is what I was referring to. I guess it’s possible (perhaps probable?) that the staff knows who they like best already and Poppe just didn’t want to tip his hand at all. It was interesting to note that Canty seemed very well-prepped for the question about the QBs, and he also gave nothing away. If I had to guess, based on what I heard I’d say Freeman won’t be the first option, but that’s really just a guess on my part.

What about the incoming first year QB? Is it out of the question, if he’s that good, that he would be a viable candidate to start?

Based upon Coach Poppe’s comments, I got the impression that Chase Goodwin is in the pole position.

Agreed. Maybe Goodwin 1. and Freeman 2.?

Regarding the tight ends, my understanding is that there are several players in the mix including Braden Daugherty and James Miller. Second hand information here, but I have heard that Daugherty is our fastest tight end. With the tremendous talent we have at wide receiver, it is going to be difficult for our opponents to defend our TE's.

As a general rule, every Ivy League Coach wants to enter the season with a solid three-deep at all positions including quarterback. For Columbia the most likely three deep at the qb position appears now to be the three guys mentioned by Coach Poppe.

Does Poppe use an H back?

Nice to see civility has returned to this board. Preseason rankings mean nothing, However despite the depth at all skill positions, we will be breaking in a new QB. Hopefully we catch lightning in a bottle like we did with Sean Brackett like we did a decade oer so ago.

Based on what i saw to spring game CG can definitely be a good QB. Will the talent around him help to elevate his play? Can he avoid making too many turnovers?

For me most interesting question is if defense can elevate their game from good to great as CJB stated Cant wait for this senior-laden team to show us what they have. Also hoping they can overcome the trauma Jake continues to be so concerned about

Good question. If he's that good, I'd think he's in the top 3 and gets some snaps. Obviously, he's got a lot to learn but makes sense he'd get some time.

Trauma?

What is the initial read on the change from Shafik to the acting President. Yale and Hopkins med grad.

Wrong blog. Find a politics board.

Reputedly not a fan of the bubble screen...

Meant to limit the inquiry to whether the acting pres is pro-athletics; had nothing to do with campus politics.

Two biggest questions heading into camp:
Who will win QB job
What is the lineup for this year’s Miller Minute?

Can’t be less interested than Shafik or Bolo.
