Moment #46: The Time Out

After Scott Lopano's punt pinned the Lions back at their own six yard line, everyone knew the Quakers would be bringing all they had on defense to get the ball back in good position.

With just 4:09 left in the game, Columbia needed to get some 1st downs to protect its fragile 20-17 lead.

Things at least started out okay, as Marcorus Garrett fought for nine yards on 1st down and another two on the next play to get the Lions a new set of downs at their own 17.

The next play was good too as WR Jake Wanamaker snagged a seven yard pass from QB Sean Brackett to get beyond the CU 20 to the 24.

Then Penn's Al Bagnoli did something that younger and less experienced head coaches don't do enough: he called time out. And he didn't call time out really to stop the clock, he called it to regroup his team. Basketball coaches do this all the time, but football coaches don't... and they should.

The result? The Quaker defense was immediately different animal. On 2nd and three, Brandon Copeland dropped Garrett for a five yard loss.

On 3rd and eight, (after another time out that WAS to save time), Brackett's pass was incomplete.

After the ensuing punt, Penn was set up on its own 38 with 2:26 left to break the Lion fans' hearts.
