Nick Surges #8
The steady stream of players coming to Columbia from Benet Academy outside of Chicago continues.
6-3, 215 lbs. LB Nick Surges has given his verbal commitment to Columbia.
His Yahoo! Sports profile page says he also received offers from Harvard and Illinois St.
The Chicago Tribune named Surges as a "Special Mention" All-State player.
Surges joins current Lions and fellow Benet grads Connor Nelligan and Charles Melka. Nick Melka is graduating this coming May but he is also a Benet alum.
Also, the best academic institution I ever attended, and that includes Columbia, Norfolk Academy is sending two players to the Lions. (Thanks to the readers who sent me the heads up).
Norfolk Academy is a very rigorous school, and I never felt more academic pressure like I did as a GRADE SCHOOLER there in 1980-81. I'm not kidding.
The two players are WR/DB Tyler Holmes and DE/OL Greg Washington. They would be the first documented Bulldogs to come to play football for Columbia.
And thanks to the readers who tipped us off to OL Collin Breckenridge from W.B. Ray HS in Corpus Christi, TX. On his Twitter account, Breckenridge identifies himself as a CU commit. Collin is the second documented W.B. Ray player to come to Columbia, the first being the recently graduated Jerry Bell '12.

Washington was all-league at both OL and DL, and Holmes was all-league at DB. League produced the eventual state champion. At least the recruiting seems to be ok. Washington said he decided on CU in part because the coaches are "experienced" and "personable".
The Tidewater area is a great place to recruit. Many athletes in that realm. Cudos

If Don'yeh Patterson is a valid commit that is a feather in Pete's cap, no doubt due to promised early PT. According to his (widely available) recruiting offers he was a solid DI prospect.
He looks fast, good hands and has size. Could be a breakthrough candidate if some how, some way this coaching staff does not destroy him as they are on the road to doing to Kelly Hilinski (who was also a sought after Di recruit from California).
According to Scout and others, Sandoval has verbaled with Cornell.

Patterson is not coming to us unfortunately. He will choose a bigger single A program. PM has shown he can recruit by bringing Nottingham and Hilinsky into the fold.
A recruit is destroyed when he is undercoached, underprepared (though not for lack of effort), utilized ineffectievly, put in the dog house for no reason, maybe a youthful attitude issue who knows, not given the tools and instruction necessary to improve through practice time, given a cold and unreasonable explanation for things he did wrong but could have done better.
A recruit is destroyed when he loses faith in the people who helped him make a decision to be part of the program. The list goes on. Bad coaches destroy good recruits.
Very encouraging to see Collin Breckenridge use cut blocking techniques in pass protection. Few large size OLs today have that kind of agility. A look at his twitter page shows how proud this kid is about coming to Columbia. The program has an obligation to fulfill these kids' hopes and dreams and reward their hard work. Yeah, we'll see....
Wingman, so the coaches don't know how to coach despite their experience and success elsewhere, or are they part of a sinister plot to lure kids to Columbia to destroy them and the football program by withholding their coaching (and destroying their own careers)? Has anyone been "put in the doghouse for no reason; if so, who? Which coach is giving "a cold and unreasonable explanation for things (a player) did wrong"? Is there any factual basis at all for your concerns or is it just more unfounded speculation?

This kid should have been told " work hard, learn the system, put 30 lbs of lean weight on per year and in a year or two there is no reason you shouldn't have an opportunity to contribute AND there are no business majors at CC but the alumni and senior players can help you get internships". That's reality!!!!!

Al, that's my point. "Evidence" isn't all over this website. Speculation and assumption are, ossified into shibboleths. It's endemic on the Web, not unique to this site, and it obscures more than clarifies the problems with the football program. If you were referring to Garrett, he had a single game suspension for doing something wrong. One game, with no indication of any further consequences. He didn't come back after one game, but Delaney did suggesting the suspensions indeed were one game, as stated by the coach, and there might have been another reason for Garrett's absence from the field. There is no other information on the subject, except a statement that he was injured at the time of the suspension and would have missed the game anyway, and the knowledge that he was injured most of his sophomore year. So placing him in a "doghouse", rather than unable to play because of injury, is an assumption not a fact, unsupported by any real evidence. Nonetheless, it seems to have become generally accepted here. The same is true of much of the other criticism on this site. There are plenty of legitimate reasons to criticize last season's coaching performance without making things up.

The problem and the crazy-ass issue here is why the continued absence wasn't addressed and simply put to bed. Along with so many other weird occurences, such as sitting certain players, etc., etc.
There could easily have been excellent reasons for all of the above; why wouldn't an aware and savvy staff have made them known, rather than stonewall and promulgate FUD? Not too smart, from my perspective. Especially when you go 0-10.
There just is not a sense of common sense and competence here. Rather a spirit of secrecy and neanderthal arrogance. The coach does not reach out to engage, and neither does the AD. We don't mean for them to kiss anyone's ass, just to communicate with the CU community. If the blog people here are as insignificant as they would have us believe, they can't blame us for their non-communication.
No, the behavior and posture all year long have been non-responsive and dismissive and non-engaged, which unfortunately is typical of Columbia admin attitude towards athletics and fans for 60+ years.

What player's were sat? The receivers Nelligan and Connors had concussion issues most of the year. So if your referring to them they were not sat. Who else?
Connors had a quad injury early in the year. I don't think he had a concussion. IMHO Connors has the best hands on the team and is our most reliable receiver. He and Nottingham must stay on the field next season.

I also wrote a positive message about lineman Collin Breckenridge based on viewing his reel.
Still, I assess a 50% chance for 0-10 next year; 35% chance for 1-9; 15% for 2-8: a lock for 0-7 Ivy. Doesn't matter who plays or doesn't play. Prove me wrong!

Most of the recruits coming to columbia have offers from other schools. Does it matter what division? You guys are jerks and cry about everything. If the lions went 10-0 you would say it was luck and PM and staff should be fired because his first 2 yrs shows who he really is! I think the 0-10 season is helping recruiting because kids feel they can play immediately instead of sitting a yr or two. Plus who wouldn't want to live in NYC for four ys with all the opportunities. Some of those kids turned down Harvard and Yale.
As far as the 11 EAs, I don't have the names. I am confident that the information is valid. I am providing this as a report and not as editorial comment on the coaches. I also am informed that we have a few big weekends for recruits coming up. And for those of you who follow basketball apparently Kyle Smith has a few outstanding recruits in the fold. PS, pretty nice job at Barclay Center yesterday with a very young team (no seniors on the roster). So Kyle has now recruited the entire team.

Why would any coaching staff choose ignore their alumni and fan base? He is the coach, the onus is on him to reach out and be accessible. It comes with the job and it amazes me he and his people don't understand that.
His #1 problem is he is a terrible communicator. Does he or any of his followers understand that? Did Diane know this before she hired him?
