JON POPPE TO BE NAMED NEW HEAD COACH SUNDAY

Because I do this blog as a supportive tool for the football program and the players, I've held off on publishing this information that I've had confirmed for more than a week. But since the facts are now becoming known by more and more members of the Columbia community anyway, it's now time to "go with the story."

Jon Poppe will be the new head coach of the Columbia Football program, with an official announcement coming this Sunday.

Poppe served as secondary coach and recruiting coordinator at Columbia under Al Bagnoli from 2015-17 before going to Harvard in those same two roles, (Poppe had been an assistant at Harvard before his time at Columbia as well).

For the past year, Poppe has been the head coach at Union College, where the Garnet Chargers went 10-2 this year and made it to the 2nd round of the Division-III playoffs. The 10 wins were a record for a 1st-year coach at Union.

Poppe is bringing with him the outstanding wide receivers coach at Princeton, Brian Flinn, who my sources tell me will be the offensive coordinator and associate head coach. Flinn's record at Princeton and Villanova before that speaks for itself.

I'm also told that Augie Hoffmann  will remain at Columbia and likely take on the role of offensive line coach. There has been an effort to retain much of the defensive coaching staff, but I'm not sure if any of them will decide to remain.

Getting back to Poppe, his Columbia connections run deep. His father Bill and brother Will both played for Columbia, and all of the boys in the family including the dad are Bergen Catholic alumni.

Poppe is an excellent recruiter. For Columbia, he was responsible for bringing in many of the players who turned the program around, most notably Cameron Roane '18 who remains the best cornerback CU has had in my lifetime. While it is true that recruiting for Harvard is a "different animal," Poppe had some major successes there as well.

He is not yet 40, which may give some of us pause, but he will be surrounded by some older staffers and he's far from the youngest person to get an Ivy football top job, (he's about 8-9 years older than David Archer when he was made HC at Cornell).

It's also a fact that the CU secondary has fallen off in quality since Poppe left. Hopefully, he can reverse that fast.

The other key positive is Poppe's knowledge that the program needs an offensive mastermind to work with him is an excellent sign of his self-awareness and awareness of the Columbia challenge. As I've written before, this team/program now is NOT A RECLAMATION PROJECT! There is good talent on the roster, great facilities in place, and a tradition of winning over the last eight years now.

Jon Poppe has what he needs to succeed at Columbia and there is no doubt he has the enthusiasm to go along with that.

  3. I think this is a great hire - good recruiter, familiar with CU, able to attract an excellent OC. I hope he can retain Stovall and his team.

  4. Disappointed we didn’t reach out to Day, Jimbo, and others. Regardless, happy with the selection and I anticipate an Ivy League title within the next four years.

  8. Super happy with the selection! Kudos to Jake for his reporting, as usual. 5-5 minimum next year.

  9. Not complaining about Poppe, seems capable of lifting the team. But curious if Gilmore was sought. He was the most-praised in the comments here at the outset.

Let’s go!!!!!!!!!!!!! A great hire, and one we won’t regret. I’m thinking we’re 5-5 at worst next year. Poppe 10-2 in his first year at Union! Can’t wait.

    1. This is a bad hire...he was at Union as HC for less than one year...his credentials as a HC are not there....Bagnoli will still be calling the shots and the Lions are destined for several losing seasons

  15. Super excited about this news. Poppe's a great hire for us and it certainly bodes well that Flinn's coming with him to steer our drifting offense. Hoffman's retention, possibly as offensive line coach, is also brilliant.

Now, if Poppe can convince Stovall and some of his guy to stay on board, we can mark this season as an aberration and get on with improving the program. Go Lions!

  18. I reached out to Tom, and he was not extended an interview. Tom is a really nice guy and a bright coach. There is no need to besmirch him or his reputation. Please stop being so close-minded about people who you know nothing about.

  19. Congrats to Poppe! Wonderful news and I am sure that he will work hard.

Unfortunately, I have no faith in Pilling as this process was very muddy.

If you solidify a good FG kicker, I see 7-3 on the horizon. That, and Auggie taking over the O-Line! Sorry, I'm an optimist.

Hopefully, Green will consider coming back...

  20. I seem to recall that Jon Poppe played his HS ball at powerhouse Bergen Catholic, as did Mark Fabish.

  21. Nothing negative toward Green at all. He should have been the starter this year from day one; but he is not the answer. Aggressive offensive scheme and play calling is. Recruit Michigan, Ohio and Texas. Patrick Mahomes Calls Texas High School Football ‘The Best in the Country’. Enough about Bergen Catholic. Broaden our horizons!

  33. So who is going to come back for a fifth year? CJ Brown said that he is all in on coaches’ corner. Does Joe Green have another year?

  34. I can’t remember Bill Poppe’s playing career, but it must be quite a thrill for a former player to see his son become our next HC. Congrats to the Poppe family.

  35. Don’t worry, young pups got talent and are ready to step in, hopefully we can resurrect this years recruiting too. Need that IVY ring within the next few years, let’s go get it!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Anyone know what kind of offensive system he uses? I believe an under the radar qb is on roster who is a bit more of a scrambler and very very accurate on the run. Saw just a little bit of him in action several years ago and to my eyes he just placed the ball perfectly repeatedly

  37. Get those eligible seniors signed up for one more run next Fall!

  38. Coach Poppe- You want to make an impression, schedule one of these teams... Army, Navy, travel to Air Force or Rice. And get Fordham back on the schedule for the battle of NYC!

Keep your distance from west coast alums who supported other candidates ("Don't use my name") but welcome you with open arms.

Give the team swagger! The first play of your first game against Lafayette, send the house! If they go offside, great! the Leopards will be gun shy the rest of the game. You just set the tone for the entire season.

New T-shirt with a roaring LION... "POPPE'S PRIDE!!!"
(Old School like "Wrobo's Army" - CC '85 reference)... Believe!

    1. Love the idea about "sending the house" first play. That's good thinking.

  39. Divisive comments. Go root for Rutgers.

  40. Poppe is a phenomenal hire. Checks all the boxes. He is everything that Fabish is not.

Recruiting...Poppe is a standup guy so I know he'll honor the verbals so far as well as relationships with kids he has made over years. For the playmakers, I'm sure he will depend on the current board and his experience in the space for kids that fit his system and Columbia.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Please as a matter of decency stop harping on Mark Fabish. He is a good man who fell short, and if he had hung on against Penn, Princeton, Brown and Dartmouth, all winnable games, we would be singing a different tune. I think Poppe is a great choice but worry about all of the campus turmoil led by the Hamas contingent and the impact it may have on recruiting.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Fabish just wasn’t a very good head coach. The truth, as they say, is an absolute defense. Poppe will be fantastic at the helm.

      Delete
  42. I don't care how we got him but, we got our guy. Jake was singing his praises years ago and lamenting when he left Columbia. That he came back, speaks volumes to me. Couldn't be happier for the program we love.

  43. We are announcing today that Jon Poppe has been named Patricia and Shepard Alexander Head Coach of Football. Poppe, who served on Columbia's staff under Al Bagnoli from 2015-17 and spent the 2023 season as head coach at Union College, becomes the 22nd coach in program history.

In his first year as the Head Coach at Union, Poppe guided the Garnet Chargers to a 10-2 mark and the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. He coached 15 student-athletes to All-Liberty League honors and helped Union post 32.6 points per game on offense while holding opponents to 11.4 to rank No. 8 in the nation.

Poppe brings over a decade of coaching experience in the Ivy League. In addition to his time at Columbia, he had two stints with Harvard (2011-14, 2017-22) as secondary and special teams coach, where his units were consistently among the best in the country at the NCAA Division I Football Championship Series (FCS) level.

We are excited to welcome Jon Poppe and his family into our Lions Community.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Just saying, did you happen to notice the number of wr screens Princeton ran this year? I get not liking a play, but maybe there are reasons of which you are unaware for this particular offensive tactic. Oh, and where is new OC supposedly coming from?

    ReplyDelete
  49. Oops check that. Maybe we wont see a lot of quick screens. In any case I am sure you will find something else to anonymously whine about
