Podcast Episode 3: Something Old, Something New

Joshua Powell

Today’s podcast looks at two Columbia D-lineman. One is a rising senior, and the other is an incoming freshman. They both represent important reasons to be excited about the 2025 season.

I’ll also add some quick notes on three other incoming freshmen.

The rising senior is Joshua Powell and the incoming freshman is Austin Coronado, (DE/OLB 6'3" 240) from St. John Bosco HS, in the Inland Empire, CA.

These are two names you need to know…

(Other incoming freshmen mentioned)

Jevaughan Barnett-Jackson, WR 6'2" 175 lbs. Oxon Hall HS, Oxon, MD

Thomas Browne, LS 6'0" 200, lbs. Westbrook HS, Beaumont, TX

Andrew “Drew” Burmeister, LB 6'2" 225 lbs, Woodstock HS, Woodstock, GA

  1. Coronado's Hudl page from the link in this post indicates he attends Damien High School in La Verne, CA. Highlights are from 2023. Did he transfer for his senior year? Why would he not have updated Hudl and included 2024 highlights? Something's off.

  2. It certainly can't help our football program that our men's basketball team is well on its way to still another horrible losing season under the leadership of a coach with a 23-80 record overall in the Ivy League. What is wrong with our Athletic Director?

  5. I’m excited for Powell. Him and Townsend as bookends will be deadly for the rest of the league

  6. We shouldn't forget about the guy that Patterson backed up last season, DT Owen Thomas, who started the last 4 games of his second year and had a season ending injury in game 1 last season. He should be back as well which provides 4 solid def lineman with good experience. I think he qualifies for a med rshirt as well which would give him a 5th year if he goes that route.

  7. Love Owen Thomas. Kid is a stud too. Can’t wait to see those four out there together recking havoc on the league.

  8. Can’t wait for year two of the Poppe dynasty! The rest of the league had better watch out!

  10. Jim Engles loses again. 23-81 and well on his way to an 0-14 season in the Ivies. Cementing his case for worst MBB coach in the history of the Ivy League.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I was wrong. I said Harvard would score 95 on us when it was Dartmouth who did. Fire Engles now.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I've stayed out of the Engles debate pending IL outcomes this year. I think the results now speak for themselves....MBB Head Coach must be replaced. If Columbia is about excellence, this should be reflected in anything we do. We were willing to attract and retain winning coaches in Football, Baseball, WBB, Tennis, etc....it's now men's basketballs turn.

I truly wonder how anyone could justify a different recommendation at this point.

  13. I am surprised there has been no public outcry from the players and their parents. Maybe they are afraid to say anything that would affect the players' chances of transferring to a more successful basketball program with better supervision by the athletic department.

  15. Peter Pilling, in the unlikely event that you are reading this blog, please fire Engles tomorrow and name one of the assistants as the acting HC. This season has become one more disaster in a long line of disasters. If I am not mistaken our IL opponents have AVERAGED 90 PPG against us.

  16. Our women's basketball team defeated Dartmouth easily in New Hampshire to stay undefeated in the Ivy League. Our amazingly talented coach, Meg Griffith, has done another extraordinary job this season. All of the reserves last night played well in Meg's fun-to-watch high speed offense. The difference between Meg and Lucky Jim Engles is striking. Meg is outstanding coach and a winner in every respect Sadly, Jim is a terrible coach who should have been discharged by our Athletic Director nine years ago.

    ReplyDelete
  17. No doubt Meg is a great coach. My only concern is that if Fliss quit we have had a significant rate of desertion: Noa Comesana, Mary (Spanish import), Eden Gainer, the transfer from Maryland on the team last year, highly touted freshman from Ohio last year. There is some dysfunction under the hood.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Ask Jim Engles about dysfunction. That’s his middle name.

  18. Any update on JT’s recovery? Will he be ready for the season?

    ReplyDelete
  19. A few reserves on two Ivy League Championship teams leave the program for personal reasons including major injuries and you use that as criticism of the most successful women basketball coach in Columbia's history. That's unfair, stupid and disturbing, particularly in light of the current controversy over whether the athletic director is entitled without explanation to retain the worst perfoming head basketball men's basketball coach coach in Columbia's long history without any explanation whatsoever.

  22. I had the misfortune of watching the Columbia Men's Basketball Game Team play Dartmouth Saturday night on SNY. We need to give credit to Columbia's two handpicked home announcers for admitting publicly that the Columbia players had no idea how to play defense. It's shocking how poorly coached the players are on the Columbia Men's Basketball Team.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I always want to tell our players to just do the opposite of what I see them doing on defense. Instead of backing off and giving three-point shooters extra space, close out. Instead of wobbling off screens, fight through them. Instead of allowing opponents to secure excellent position in the post, don’t let them establish, etc. Anyone who has ever coached, played, or even just watched a lick of basketball can see how lacking in fundamentals and how poorly coached our men’s teams are year in and year out.

      Delete
  23. Is Lucky Jim Engles record in Ivy League games as Columbia's head coach 23 wins against 81 losses or 23 wins against 82 losses? Why isn't this statistic published prominently on the Columbia Athletics website.

    ReplyDelete
  24. It’s 23-81. It had been 23-75 going into Ivy play this year. We’re 0-6 thus far, but don’t worry, once we lose to Brown on Saturday, it’ll be 0-7 and 23-82 for Jimmy Teflon.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Congratulations to the anonymous poster on this Board for coming up with the very creative name "Jimmy Teflon," which I suspect will become even more popular than "Lucky Jim," during the remainder of Engles lifetime employment contract with Columbia University.

    ReplyDelete
  26. How can Cousin Peter possibly keep Jimmy Teflon as Columbia's Head Coach for still another weekend with a record of 23-81 in the Ivy League? Is Columbia's Interim President, Dr. Katrina Armstrong aware of Teflon's record? If not, why not? In medical terms, 23-81 is the equivalent of 23 successful surgeries in 104 tries.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Do you really think this is on her radar?

      Delete
    2. Certainly not, nor should it be. Columbia has bigger issues than a mediocre MBB team.

      Delete
    3. Jimmy Teflon can only dream of mediocrity, especially in conference. I’d say 23-81 (including 0-6 this season) isn’t even in the same galaxy as mediocre.

      Delete
  27. Of course, the interim Prez is aware. She has attended football games, and we have seen her at women’s basketball games. Of course, she has bigger fish to fry, so men’s basketball is a low priority, but she is aware. Whether she gives a hoot or not remains unclear. The real question remains about our AD and the Schiller Court.

    ReplyDelete
  28. So the last resort of Jimmy Teflon's sole supporter on Planet Earth is to say that the Interim President of the University has bigger problems to deal with than a "mediocre" coach. That's a remarkable revelation and I agree that Columbia has much bigger problems than the progressive destruction of the men's basketball program. However, in my opinion it is only a matter of time before the " s---hits the fan". whereupon the adverse publicity resulting from the Administration's failure to address the issue for nearly years will become a huge problem for many of the so-called "elites" who consider sports to be unimportant. Would a multi-million dollar class action by the players and their families against Columbia University and its Board of Trustees be sufficient to draw the Columbia Administration's attention to this problem? In the highly charged college sports world that we now live in that seems like a real possibility to me.

  30. Agree with you wholeheartedly. Apparently the name calling poster is unaware of the many successful multi-million dollar class action claims and other claims of various types that have been asserted against Columbia University and other Ivy League Schools in the past few years based upon every imaginable legal theory. While suing a university for not terminating a coach with a terrible record may not have happened yet, it does not seem like a stretch to me given the current way that the financial rights and interests of college athletes are viewed by the courts.

    ReplyDelete
  32. There is obviously an explanation for why Engles has not been fired. Pilling is not an idiot. Something has been preventing Pilling from firing Engles? Possible theories: Schiller is calling the shots and cannot admit that his role in picking Engles was a mistake; Sherwin really did put a codicil in his will; in order to pay Meg, Pilling does not have enough $ in his budget to hire a decent replacement for Engles; Pilling is planning to retire and wants to leave this hot mess in the lap of his successor; others ADs and coaches in the IL are paying the salary of Engles to keep him at Columbia; and most likely, something that nobody on this board has been creative enough to imagine.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Interesting theory about Pilling’s potential retirement. He’s right around that age…

      Delete
  33. Whether or not Pilling may be nearing retirement age, the fact is that he has been , and is still Columbia's Athletic Director and therefore was, and still is Coach Engles' superviser. Thus, it was and still is Pilling's responsibility to supervise the Columbia Men's Basketball Team. Pilling has never bothered to address the Columbia student body or Columbia alumni regarding the demise of the Columbia Men's Football Program. Having to failed to do so, Pilling needs to retire now or be terminated

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well, terminating Pilling seems a bit extreme, but he shouldn’t be permitted to provide no information about Engles and continue to pretend everything is fine with MBB.

      Delete
  34. Who is really running the athletic department at this point? Whether it’s Pilling or someone else, whoever is in charge must fire Engles.

    1. Despite all the other success we've had recently? Football, WBB, tennis etc. Give me a break.

    2. Yes, MBB and Jimmy Teflon don’t get a free pass because our other teams have been very good. That’s not how it works—no free riders.

      Delete
    3. Pilling will have to fire Engles if/when we finish 0-14. Right? Right?

      Delete
  35. Well this is a football platform and he is the first AD in 60 years to have a consistent success with Fb. Five winning seasons in the last seven including now an ivy title after we had three winning seasons in the 55 years before he got here! I am not defending Engles but let’s face it other than Kyle smith not much success in basketball of late. Joe Jones, Hill and Halas coached a combined 18 years without a winning season in the league and i think we have only had four winning seasons in the last 40 years! Hopefully the next coach can do what Meg has done and football under Al and now Poppe.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Any good basketball coach knows how to teach defense. Teams with a talent deficit which play great defense tend to be competitive. Engles cannot teach defense. To consistently give up 90+ points a game against IL competition is a stunning indictment of a total coaching failure.

    1. This is becoming tiresome, especially for a FOOTBALL BLOG. Time to take your medicine and focus.

      Delete
    2. Agreed - tiresome.

Am excited about the upcoming football season. Think we have a good shot at a sole title. Townsend back, Goodwin healthy, Sanchez continuing to grow, outstanding OL, DL with significant experience, LBs with experience, DBs up and coming and a strong receiver core. Augment this with some apparently incoming talent. Expect Seitu to continue to open up the offense. It should be an exciting season. Can’t wait!

      Delete
    3. I agree that each position group has some talent. But is there enough for an overall solid 2 deep? (Somewhat ironically the qb room may now be deepest group). I am afraid the overall talent for 2 deep will not be there to contend for title.

Hope I am wrong. And coaching does matter.

      Delete
    4. Don’t try to defend the indefensible. Poppe has been great, as has Griffith, but that doesn’t mean Jimmy Teflon should get a pass. Soon to be 23-82. So stinky!

  37. Let’s pretend the MBB situation isn’t real. We’ll just focus on football. Where do you guys think we’ll be ranked in the preseason poll, and would you have us as the preseason favorite to win the Ivies? Why or why not?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I’ll bite (not hard). I’ll say we should be favored to repeat, especially with all our returning talent. That said, given the anti-Columbia bias of some voters and the fact that we’re not yet seen as an established powerhouse in the league, I predict the preseason poll will have us finishing third.

      Delete
    2. Completely agree.

      Delete
  38. Should be picked first, but probably we’ll be picked for 4th.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yeah, it seems likely that we’ll be picked third or fourth. The voters will see their mistake soon enough! Looking ahead, the games in Hanover and New Haven are going to be tough. But I’m sure we’ll do our best to avenge this year’s Dartmouth loss, and Yale is losing some key pieces.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Well we won by today thanks to an underutilized guard who had a great game. It was nice to get a "w" but it was all due to O'Keefe and not JimmyTeflon who admitted to Lance Medow after the game that he had no idea what was happening down the stretch. Jimmy used up all his time outs with several minutes still remaining in the game. But the players on their own bailed him out.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Maybe spend more time focusing on the players. They were 0-6, down 15 and fought back. Says a lot about those kids. O'Keefe was great, Blair came up big on the final play and Kenny competed hard despite an off night. Good to see the team get a W.

      Delete
    2. I'm happy for the MBB players getting a win. Engles interview was shameful and illustrative of how tone deaf he is. He had no answer for Meadows "technical question" because...he doesn't actually coach.

      Delete
    3. Meanwhile, a 38 point win by WBB, a team who has a coach that gets her team ready. WBB in top 35 nationally.

      Delete
    4. Time for Pilling to give Engles another multi-year contract extension. Until today, I’d never seen a team out-Engles us over the final five minutes. Kids played hard, so I’m happy for them.

      Delete
    5. Miracle win against a weak opponent. The pinnacle under Engles. Happy for the players. I was fully expecting Kino Lilly Jr.’s three to splash through just before the buzzer.

      Delete
    6. Not gonna lie, listening to Meadows interview Jimmy Teflon is just brutal.

      Delete
    7. I'm also really happy for the guys. They kept fighting, but Brown did indeed pull off one of our own oft-seen meltdowns. And Gerard O'Keefe was simply outstanding - rookie of the week for sure. Now on the post-game interviews --- I'm sorry, but this hugging and towering over Lance Medow (not related to Audrey Meadows of The Honeymooners) is unacceptable. Deflecting and dismissing questions, overall demeanor is pathetic/disturbing. Not just once -- all the time. Compare and contrast with post-game interviews and press conferences with Megan Griffith. Not to mention another empty MBB report sent out on Friday.

      Delete
  43. Jimmy Teflon would have you believe the team will now rip through the remainder of the schedule. The reality is that our best case on the back seven is 3-4, which would land us at…4-10 (again). But because we won’t beat Princeton, Yale, or Cornell, we’d have to take three out of four against Dartmouth, Penn, Brown, and Harvard for that to occur. Definitely not happening, so our most realistic result in conference is probably 2-12. As another poster suggested, that’ll likely be good enough to get Jimmy Teflon another five years at the very least.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think we “upset” Penn at home and maybe steal one in Cambridge or Providence. So I’ll project 3-11. Meanwhile, Jimmy Teflon will point to the DLR injury as one of many bad breaks, all the while lamenting “what could have been.” And then he’ll insist that the future is bright, but that joke isn’t funny anymore.

      Delete

  63. Awful game -- Pilling needs to either discharge his duty of supervision of the men's basketball program by firing his obviously incompetent coach, or Pilling needs to resign. The great mystery we have here is why Pilling has not fired Engles. Everyone realizes by now that Engles is a disaster and Pilling made a huge mistake in hiring and keeping Engles for nine years. However, he has two big wins with Megan Griffith and Jon Poppe for which we all grateful. So what is Pilling's issue?

  67. The Harvard broadcast team at last night’s game noted that Engles obviously cannot coach defense. This pathetic MBB season cannot end soon enough. Engles is the worst MBB coach in the history of the Ivy League, and I have seen them all going back over 60 years. Why he was not fired five years ago is the mystery of the ages. He cannot recruit IL level talent, he cannot teach defense, he cannot manage a game, and he exudes the look of a coach who knows that he is going to lose the minute he steps onto the court. His disgraceful interview with Lance Medow should have been the last straw.

  71. You are correct about the Engles-Pilling nightmare being a "hoax." It says something about the lack of oversight in the Columbia Administration that the Athletic Director has been permitted to retain without explanation an obviously incompetent coach for almost a decade. In legal terms that's called "gross negligence."

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The fact is that you think you're entitled to an explanation, which isn't the case. Pilling doesn't operate without oversight and surely has had to justify keeping Engles around. We all wish he hadn't expended him but he did. Pilling has done a great job as AD. He's been too lenient with Engles obviously but it's not some sort of negligence and you, despite being a season ticket holder and donating $100 on Giving Day, aren't entitled to any sort of explanation.

  72. Agree Pilling has earned our trust and we must defer to him. He has alot of faith in Engles and if he fires him now, then it looks like the last nine years have been a waste and we have to start from zero with a new coach. My guess he has him come back next year to see if he can finally turn this thing around. I for one am tired of this abd ready for change but i think we have defer to Pilling on this one.

    1. I’ll say this as politely as I can: you are absolutely insane! Engles should have been fired five years ago, and he should not be allowed to coach another game, much less another season. You’re right—the last nine years have been a waste. Under no circumstances should we continue to throw good money after bad. Taken to its logical conclusion, your argument for retaining Engles for one more year would be permanent lifetime employment for him as pure head coach. That’s something many already fear is the state of things. He should not be allowed to finish the season, and he definitely should not be invited back. If you think otherwise, the best we can do is pray for you!

    2. I think you need to read the post above more carefully. The person is just saying we need to trust pilling on this one. That makes sense- we just won our first ivy title in fb in 63 years so lets give Pilling the space to make an informed decision decision. What is most upsetting is the record in the league of 9 and 56 over the last five years but Engles also had huge success in his prior job. I think we just have to wait and see what they want to do. Just like the fb giants i am sure Mara was upset but then decided to keep everyone another years. It has been a terrible season and the results are not good in the league but lets just give Pilling the benefit of doubt that is all the poster is saying.

    3. My original post simply stated that Pilling is a really good AD and the idea that he should be fired for retaining Engles too long is ridiculous.

      Delete
    4. Don’t think I need to read anything more carefully. I would urge you to think very hard about exactly what you’re articulating. Basically, your position is that we should just trust Pilling no matter what. If he chooses to bring back Engles, we should accept that decision, according to your argument. Not only do you fail to acknowledge that Pilling could make the wrong decision (and there’s precedent here, as keeping Engles for all those years has clearly been the wrong decision), but you also think there is some kind of complicated problem to solve here that requires weeks of careful deliberation. Nothing could be further from the truth. The matter is extraordinarily straightforward: there is zero reason Engles should be retained. Nothing, nada, zip, zilch. If you can’t admit that retaining Engles at this point would be unacceptable — and this is a pretty open and shut case for all the reasons others have cited (do I really need to rehash them?) — then I’d love to know what performance-based issues from our coach would, in your opinion, rise to the level of necessitating termination. I really would.

    5. By the way, the Giants’ decision to bring everybody back is moronic. Let’s not make the same mistake, and let’s not pretend that intelligent people can’t make bad decisions.

      Delete
    6. Pilling shouldn't be fired for regaining Engles too long. And Pilling doesn't owe you an explanation. You don't matter.

      Delete
    7. Whatever you say, keyboard warrior. I love it — “you don’t matter.” Is that all you got???

    8. I don’t think the poster above is saying Pilling should be fired for keeping Teflon for this long. If he is, where in his post was that claim made? Someone else may have said that, but I don’t believe the guy who said there’s no argument for keeping Engles said Pilling should be fired. If Engles is given another year, however, everybody involved in what would be a terrible decision shouldn’t just be given a free pass. Not sure what should happen, but we should not respond with blind faith and absolute fealty. Pilling isn’t omnipotent, all our opinions matter, and our leaders are and have to accountable. That’s part of what being a leader means. People can say dumb things like “you don’t matter” and “Pilling owes you nothing,” but it doesn’t make it true.

  73. Is it true that the Athletic Directors and Head Basketball Coaches of all seven of our Ivy League opponents have signed a petition urging our Athletic Director, Peter Pilling, to retain Coach Engles thru the year 2028 in order to show their unanimous support of the Columbia's Board of Trustees ten-year plan to deemphasize the men's basketball program

    ReplyDelete
  74. I agree with the poster for mocking anyone on this Board who is donating one hundred dollars a year or less to the Columbia Men's Basketball Program. Certainly, there should be a much higher minimum in order to seek an explanation from the Columbia Anti-Sport Elites why they hate winning so much.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I think we are all unhappy with the current situation, but we have to recognize that the decision to retain or replace the coach rest with Pilling. I am sure at the end of the season he will evaluate the state of the program and then make a determination.

  77. There is an explanation for the retention of Engles, to be sure. He convinced Pilling that all of his efforts were pointing to this season, with a POY candidate in DLR, a great #2 in Noland, some rising juniors who would benefit from two years of game experience, a deep bench, and the best incoming class in the IL. So that explains why he was kept this year, and historically only Penn fires coaches in mid-season. Now here is the real question: when Engles argues that he had a great start to the season but the DLR injury could not be surmounted, does Pilling buy it? I say no-Engles just cannot coach defense and the rest of his coaching skills cannot surmount his inability to keep teams from routinely going for 90 to our 70 or so.

    1. And we lost the first three IL games with DLR (four if you count Penn). No matter who he has, Engles loses. He could take this Yale team and turn it into a sub-.500 group.

    2. The real mystery to me (besides why he is still our “coach”) is why Engles wasn’t fired after his first 1-13 season. It was so enjoyable it had to be repeated? That’s why I sometimes think there might just be something to the whole Sherwin codicil business.

  79. Penn is not the only Ivy League school that has fired its head basketball coach during the season. For example, Columbia's Athletic Director Ralph Furey terminated Columbia's Head Basketball Coach Archie Oldham during the season and then replaced him with Interim Coach, Ken Hunter. After the season ended Columbia named its then Freshman Coach Jack Rohan as its new Varsity Head Coach. Things worked out very well for Columbia as the Lions enjoyed much success under Rohan's leadership including winning its sole Ivy League Title, Rohan proved to be a brilliant game coach and a great recruiter. who brought basketball greats Jim McMillian, Heyward Dotson, Dave Newmark and others to Columbia . Everyone involved in the mid-season coaching change was very happy with the results, including most importantly, the players.

  82. Too much talk about Engles. As so many others have said, Pilling is a great AD so lets give him the space to make the decision without everyone weighing in. We must trust the process and let him make the decision with the best interest of the program in mind. These decisions are never easy.

Lot of it is coaching but a lot of it is also the team focus, commitment and desire to excel.
