Looks like an H-back!
It was another short message from Head Coach Pete Mangurian on his personal blog yesterday, but it did contain really valuable info.
Mangurian named 11 Lions who will be joining the team as freshmen this fall. We knew all these names already, but now we know which positions Columbia is projecting them to play.
I'd say the headline is Nick Durham being listed only as a TE. The 6-4, 228-pounder was primarily a DE in high school but he could be a real factor at the H-back position that I have previously reported is the formation Mangurian is favoring for 2012.
Darin Patmon, who played safety in high school is being projected as a cornerback. At 6-1, 180 lbs. he could be strong there.
The other nine players remained at the positions we expected them to be.
Mangurian promises more names in the coming days... let's hope some of them include the 4 guys we don't know about yet and maybe that mystery transfer some of us have heard not enough about!
Sweeney Switches
Speaking of tight ends, Cornell's Beau Sweeney, who transferred to the Big Red after two years as a QB at Cal, has switched to tight end. If that isn't a major vote of confidence in rising junior Bushnell Cup winner Jeff Mathews, I don't know what is.

I suspect that we will see one or two DLs switch to the offensive side of the line.
Nick Durham's local newspaper has previously published several articles indicating that Columbia was recuriting him for the tight end position. His recruiting film shows that he has the size and speed to be an outstanding tight end in the Ivy League. He is also an outstanding blocker so that's another plus. Durham certainly could be an impact player at Columbia. In fact, all eleven of the players that have sent in their deposit look like good prospects to me.
Offensive linemen usualy switch to defense, not the other way areound. Defensive linemen usually do not have the size to play on the offensive line. What I suspect to happen this year is that the Lions will have an outstanding offensive line from the beginning of the season consisting of five veteran players, with very good depth behing them. However, the defensive line is more of an issue, as the only standout big man is Josh Martin, and he played linebacker last year. I would not be srprised if one of the freshmnn linemen breaks into the starting line-up early in the season.
I disagree that O-line to D-line is the only move ... it can go either way ... as for the D-line .... I think Childress has decent size and will be an impact player this year .... I agree that Padilla and Napier have a shot to start ....

Does anybody know if Mangurian prefers his lineman to be huge road graders or more athletic types that can block in space?
If the latter than I could see some D lineman moving to the O line
