North Carolina Commit Revealed

Broderick Taylor

It took awhile, but about a week after Offensive Coordinator Mark Fabish tweeted about a North Carolina player committing to the Lions, we now know that he was talking about 6-0 200 pound RB Broderick Taylor . Taylor hails from Holly Springs HS in North Carolina, where he also spent some time playing QB and WR.

A few of my fellow fans had seen Taylor's highlight tape last month and privately emailed me that they believed he would probably be one of the most prized members of the incoming class if he committed to us. So this feels good.

Taylor will be the first documented Holly Springs grad to come to Columbia football.

Taylor brings our list of unofficial commits to 28:

1) Darion Acohido WR/RB/DB 5-9 178 lbs. Liberty HS Henderson, NV

Hoops Highlight

It's just too hard to ignore the huge win for men's basketball Saturday night over Harvard, the favorite to win the Ivy title. So let's talk about it.

The victory is certainly a great argument that the Lions do have what it takes to qualify for the upcoming first-ever Ivy League basketball tournament at the Palestra in March. I figure it will take eight or maybe seven league wins to get there and the Lions are well on their way. For this to be happening after the massive loss of talent via graduation last year is really a testament to new Head Coach Jim Engles.

Good Start?

Bruce Wood's Big Green Alert blog has the info on each Ivy team's out of conference football schedule for 2017.

Columbia's schedule, compared to what I was expecting, looks easier.

Sept. 16th: Wagner
Sept. 23rd: Georgetown
October 7th: at Marist

I was expecting the season to start on the road against a tough Saint Francis team, but that series seems to be on hold for now. Wagner is not a bad football program, but Columbia has really had the Seahawks' number two years in a row now.

Of course having written that, now I expect all these opponents to get some major upgrade over the off season and become world beaters. But on January 25th, this looks like a OOC schedule that can lead to multiple wins.

A Most Special Return Specialist

Darion Acohido

Over the first two years of Head Coach Al Bagnoli's Columbia tenure, the Lion return game hasn't been very good.

Now it looks like he's bringing in a ringer.

5-9 178 pound WR/RB/DB Darion Acohido, who was featured nationally by USA Today as possibly the best return man in the country, has committed to Columbia.

Of course, he also has some very strong stats as a receiver.

Acohido is from Liberty High School in the Las Vegas suburb of Henderson, NV.

Here's an interview with the impressive Acohido from early last season.

Acohido will be the first Liberty HS grad to come to Columbia, but a number of Vegas-area players including three grads from Liberty rival Bishop Gorman HS in Michael Geraghty, Dylan Weldon, and Daniel Hong.

Acohido brings our list of unofficial commits to 27:

1) Darion Acohido WR/RB/DB 5-9 178 lbs. Liberty HS Henderson, NV

Did Ivy Concussion Rules Bag us a Top DB?

Blake Wooden

Blake Wooden, a 6-1, 180 pound DB from high school powerhouse American Heritage in Plantation, Florida has committed to Columbia.

Wooden joins fellow American Heritage HS DB Will Allen on the 2017 incoming Columbia freshmen parade, and of course their former American Heritage teammate and current Columbia kicking sensation Oren Milstein '20. It should be noted that in the entire history of Columbia football before Al Bagnoli became head coach, the Lions had never bagged a player from American Heritage, and now we have three.

But there's another fascinating angle to this story: Wooden's father Shawn is a former NFL player who has been at the forefront of NFL retirees suing the NFL for hiding the truth about concussions.

Based on that, I have to think that the Ivy League's extremely strict rules and concussion protocols may have played a big role in Blake choosing Columbia. That's especially true since he had some FBS interest, including an offer from Fresno State.

This brings our unofficial list of publicly announced incoming freshmen to 26:

1) Luke Adams RB/LB 6-2 210 lbs. Notre Dame Prep Pontiac, MI

2) Jalen Allen RB 5-11 185 lbs. Cranbrook-Kingswood HS Bloomfield Hills, MI

3) Will Allen III DB 5-9 164 lbs. American Heritage HS, Plantation, FL

4) Josh Bean QB 6-2 200 lbs. Hinsdale HS Hinsdale, IL

5) Dillon Davis QB 6-1 206 lbs. Aledo HS Aledo, TX

6) Myles Davis WR 5-10 175 lbs. Walter Payton HS Chicago, IL

7) Seth DeVary OL 6-4 275 lbs. Larue County HS Hodgenville, KY

8) Alexander Filacouris RB 6-1 200 lbs. Half Hollow Hills West HS Dix Hills, NY

9) Graham Flinn DB/WR 6-1 180 lbs. Benedictine College Prep HS Richmond, VA

10) Tyson Hugee DB 6-0 170 lbs. Springside Chestnut Hill Academy Philadelphia, PA

11) Emerson Kabus WR 5-10 170 lbs. St. Augustine HS St. Augustine, FL

Incoming LB Poll

Carson Powell

Incoming LB Carson Powell is one of the candidates in a newspaper poll looking for the fans' choice for best linebacker in Palm Beach.

Powell is currently leading the other candidates, including an Alabama commit. The paper says Powell had 96 tackles this past season, 28 of them for a loss.

Late Pick Up?

Speaking of linebackers, Columbia may have a shot at a good one from New Jersey now that UConn and its new coaching staff has pulled its scholarship offer to Raritan High School's Ryan Dickens.

Titletown QB

Dillon Davis

Texas state champ Aledo HS QB Dillon Davis has committed to Columbia.

I spent a good deal of this past long holiday weekend looking at videos of or about Davis and he comes across as the kind of player the coaches liked more for his heart and leadership abilities than any other attribute.

Based on the enthusiasm of the coaches about this incoming class overall, I'm expecting 3-4 more very top notch player commitments to be announced in the coming month.

This extremely well-produced video about Davis' family history tells that story really well.

Davis will be the first Aledo HS grad to come to Columbia football.

This brings our unofficial, but publicly announced, list of commitments to 25:

Top Notch Get

Justin Woodley, a speedy and sure handed LB with tons of quality offers, has committed to Columbia.

According to my LionFeeders Columbia Recruitment Database, Woodley will be the third Bishop's School grad to come to Columbia football. Current Lion kickoff specialist Chris Alleyne is a Bishop's grad. (The first was Alec Fisher '15).

His highlight tape, (linked to his name above), is one of the better ones out there for his position among Ivy recruits. He had 100 or more tackles in each of his last two years and led his team on offense and defense.

Woodley played in the same league as incoming Columbia punter Drew Schmid, and Woodley and Bishop's came out on top in their head-to-head matchup, 37-21 this fall.

This brings our list of unofficial, but publicly announced, commitments to 24:

1) Luke Adams RB/LB 6-2 210 lbs. Notre Dame Prep Pontiac, MI

2) Jalen Allen RB 5-11 185 lbs. Cranbrook-Kingswood HS Bloomfield Hills, MI

3) Will Allen III DB 5-9 164 lbs. American Heritage HS, Plantation, FL

Dumb Ivy Rules, Part 234

Grant Mullins

The University of Georgia really wanted our excellent freshman kicker Oren Milstein last year, but he turned down their scholarship offer to come to Columbia.

Now it turns out the Bulldogs will be getting a top-notch Columbia kicker after all. Graduating senior punter Cameron Nizialek will be joining UGA this coming fall as a grad student to play out his final year of NCAA eligibility. The Ivy League does not allow grad students to play varsity sports under any circumstances.

But wait, it gets worse.

Cal may have lost last night's big hoops game against rival UCLA, but the leading scorer for the Bears was none other than... recent Columbia grad Grant Mullins. Mullins, who missed almost two full seasons for Columbia with a concussion, is starting and starring for Cal because he too is not allowed to continue playing Ivy varsity sports. The only way he could have played for the Lions this year is to have dropped out of school for at least a semester. That's simply too costly for a lot of people.

This is a dumb rule, period. I'm not sure what the Ivy League is trying to protect us from by barring grad student eligibility. Are we worried that our scholar athletes will want to do TOO MUCH learning? Are we protecting the other teams from some kind of geniuses who also happen to be "ringer" athletes?

This is a rule that needs to ends now.

Got One, Lost One

Dwayne Warren

6-3 198-pound WR Dwayne Warren from New Jersey's Seton Hall Prep has committed to Columbia.

Warren was a top receiver in the Ivy talent-rich New Jersey prep league for two seasons. Warren will be the eighth documented Seton Hall grad to come to Columbia football, joining current rising sophomore Rory Schlageter and fellow incoming freshman Josh Kaminsky.

Columbia has lost another WR commit, Jake McCurry from Solon, OH. McCurry has decided to take a preferred walk on offer at Michigan.

So here's an updated and unofficial list of incoming players including Warren and without McCurry:
