Just finished reading the write-ups on all the new members of the Columbia Football Family. Seems like a great group of young men. My compliments to Coach Mangurian and whomever else was involved with this exciting new presentation. I loved all the detail on the new players, the listing of the names of the parents and siblings, and the players high school coaches.

On paper, my fav's for 2013 are WR Hill, DT Carson, QB Hillinski, and LB Kwiatkowski ... another comment is that there looks to be a real logjam at DB and WR ... more rank thinning I suspect ...

By my count there are only 24 on the list, a very low number for an Ivy recruiting class. Did I miss anyone?

Coach said there will be a few others. Sounds like we will be around 28 to 30. The quality so far seems good, with much more size up front on both sides of the ball and more quickness as well.

I like RedTiger61's guys, but my "fab nine" would include possible impact players Watson, Hunton, Spears, Melka, Bonaides and Rea. Of course, Nottingham will be an automatic addition to the "fab list" the moment Coach M says he's a Columbia Lion.

Looks like the roster heights and weights have been updated--a medical and parents dream team with no fat players!

Funny to see nearly all of OL guys in the 250s. Not a bad place to be given that they'll be lifting throughout the spring and summer. I'm thinking we'll average 270 by September.

I think we are still going to have an interior OL which will be outweighed on average by 30 pounds, as compared to the OLs which our opponents will field, and which will be outweighed by the DLs we are going to face as well. So the question comes down to the following: can we move the DL off the line of scrimmage enough to create creases for the inside running game and can we withstand bull/power rushes when we go into pass protection with an OL that light?

I heard that the OL recruit Pace is only 16 years old.

Pace will turn 17 shortly before the season

Really hope this "experiment" pays off. We have 1 guy over 260, while last year, Harvard had 23. They ran all over us last year, I'm just hoping this speed idea works

Going with this light a line on purpose is a major gamble. We all hope it works, but I think we also all need to agree that this is an unusual move and those politely questioning it have every right to do so. The hyper-defensiveness some of us have experienced when we have asked is disconcerting.

Jake, what is the alternative?

Jake said...

Well, we could go bigger. And to be fair, we've had some very big O-lines at CU over the years that did not excel. Obviously this is not all about weight. But 253 as the avg. weight for an entire O-line is unprecedented, at least for the last 30 years or so. Many of these players have lost significant weight to get down to this level, so we're NOT talking about having to settle for smaller guys. Again, I want this to work, but let's face it: it didn't work too well last season. We want to see real improvement this season or then I think we need a plan B.

So we should be fatter?

Jake said...

We should be better. Every other team in the Ivies is significantly bigger, or "fatter" if we have to call it that. Now, I'm all for doing something different and not chasing the herd... but it's got to work. Let's hope it does. Because if it does, it will not only make us winners but it will establish what could be a healthier trend for all of organized football.

Two years ago, when Jeff Adams was a senior, our OL averaged close to 300 pounds. We won one game. We were a little better on pass pro but had no rushing game whatsoever. Last year Garrett rushed for almost 1,000 yards. Against teams with very strong DLs, like Brown, Harvard and Lehigh, our OL was pushed around. Otherwise, they didn't play too badly, and it was our front seven on defense which failed to make a stop on the final Penn and Dartmouth drives. Had they made the stops in those games we would have had a five game win season. So I think we can have a decent offense with some incremental improvement on the OL, but we need to be stronger in the front seven on defense to show real improvement in our record.

We had better rushing last year, that's true. But Brackett was harassed like crazy and we gave up an epic amount of sacks. I actually think our OL was way better in 2011, but thankfully we had a better RB and a better defense to thank for the better record in 2012.

So does that mean that the new recruits have to lose weight when they arrive? They range from 260 lbs up to 295 lbs.

Jake said...

They did last year, so I'd say yes. I can't imagine anyone gets a pass.

Anonymous said...

How many seniors where on that line?

Jake said...

The line from 2011? A lot more than there were last year to be sure. But are we talking overall quality, experience, or just weight? None of those factors alone are the difference between a good and bad line. But again, this is still a very unprecedented move by Mangurian... which DOES NOT MEAN IT'S BAD... just very different and I insist we all recognize that for better or for worse.

You can be big and not fat as an olineman. Chance Warmack from Alabama is 6'2" 313 lbs and has a six pack.

Anonymous said...

body type, body type, body type, you can not generalize. some guys are supposed to be 300 and some guys are not. Body fat guidelines are not new, they have been around forever. We had a bunch of guys who where 300 and should have been 260. Lets see if we get stronger, lets see if our WR can get open faster, lets see if we can throw the ball on time and lets see if we can play together.

Why are our seniors so underdeveloped? Why don't we have players in the pipeline? Lets assume if we had better we would play them. Are there any players own our line that are worse now than before they lost the weight?

Not sure that all you BIG linemen advocates have been watching the NFL games in the past few years, but the running game is giving way to the passing game very quickly. Big slow linemen are great for goal line stands, but not the best if you have a pass oriented offense,
which it looks to me like Coach M is building. Quickness is the name of the game for ALL positions. 280+ lb line men with quickness will not be playing in the IL. If you are looking for those kids try the SEC.

That last comment was probably the most illuminating so far. I agree we're probably going to throw the ball a lot more this year.
