Help Wanted: From Norries Wilson?

Now that the Rutgers football coaching staff has gotten the ax, I guess former Columbia Head Coach Norries Wilson is looking for a new job.

I don't know if there's any long-term agreements between Wilson and Columbia, but if there aren't I'd still like to see Norries paid to sit down with Head Coach Al Bagnoli and Recruiting Coordinator John Poppe and go through the finer points of how he recruited better talent to Columbia than just about any coach that came before him over a 30 year period. His recruits, including graduating seniors Chad Washington, Toba Akinleye, and Cameron Molina, were still making incredible impact this season. Norries' successor Pete Mangurian made the mistake of throwing everything Norries and his staff in the garbage when some of what they did was very good, especially recruiting.

What did Norries and his guys do to snag us people like Austin Knowlin, Alex Gross, Sean Brackett, Josh Martin, etc.?

If there was any method or formula to it, our current recruiters need to know.

UPDATE: Norries Wilson is still at Rutgers as "interim head coach" until a new staff can be hired. I don't think that will take too long and it's possible a discussion between Bagnoli and Norries can happen soon if that's what's in the cards.

Austin Knowlin was originally a U Conn recruit who decided to follow NW to Columbia. Sean Brackett's pastor, as I recall, was also NW's pastor when NW was at U Conn. He apparently played a positive role.

I think Norries is a fine position coach and football guy. Where he relates to players is his camaraderie yet retains his command of the room. Players want to play for coaches like that. Some coaches have an air of aloofness or "my way or the highway" personalties. When you have a coach recruiting you who speaks to the challenge and gets you excited about the possibilities it makes all the difference.

How about jeff adams, ma olawale, and andrew kennedy??? Contact Norries or Chris Nugai the recruiting coordinator or any of the staff.

Some good news for tonight: after a few really, really, really (to borrow from the Spice Girls) close losses, we took down pretty good Bucknell tonight, at Bucknell, 72-61.

Asia is able to identify for each of Penn's recruits the extent to which The had offers from other Ivies. Can we do the same with our list? One measurement of how we are doing is to see who we beat out for our incoming guys. In addition, I know that some of our guys are two and three star recruits. Can we provide that sort of data?

In addition to LB Danny De Lorenzi, another Bergen Catholic player, TE Korab Idrizi, has been offered. He has at least 12 offers including FBS
teams Temple and Buffalo. The Lions appear to be his only Ivy offer. I don't know if he has already decided.

Matt Dame and Jalen Williams are 3-star recruits, there may be others.

Men's BB seems to be loaded with talent. Any of five guys can hit double figures on any given nite. But that killer instinct, that last 5 minute intensity to finish close games off and hit the shots down the stretch. Seems spotty. My sense is that all this talent is still figuring out how to gel as a powerful unit.

See today's Spec for an update on Al's recruiting efforts.

Chen -- you are right. I believe the current seniors are 5-15 over the course of their career in games decided by 3 points or less in regulation or that went to OT. It is a talented team with key players who did win some tight games two years ago. But they lose a lot of close ones. Twenty games seems like a large enough sample size not to be a fluke.

Sadly, Roar Lion, a 21st data point tonite where we lost to what looks to be a formidable St Joseph team by two. They only lost to Florida and Villanova both respectably.
