Hot in the City

Columbia 35 Georgetown 14

Why Columbia Won

The Lion defense and special teams held the Hoyas off until the Columbia offense got moving in the second quarter. The D held Georgetown to just 15 rushing yards and 12 first downs. Meanwhile CU QB Anders Hill threw four TD passes, two each to superstar sophomore wide receivers Ronald Smith and Wainwright. The Lion offensive line allowed no sacks and Columbia committed no turnovers.

Why Georgetown Lost

The Hoyas couldn't get much offense going until the game was long over, and special teams failures and mistakes put them too far behind. The GU running game was non-existent throughout.

Key Turning Points

-On the first play of the 2nd quarter, Georgetown decided to try a fake punt on 4th and six from their 44. Freshman Carson Powell made a great tackle to stop the play cold at the 46.  The Lions then went on an eight-play drive that ended with an 18 yard TD pass from Hill to Smith and a 7-0 lead.

-With just over six minutes left in the half, the Hoyas tasted disaster on yet another punt when the snap hit the up man and the fumble was eventually recovered by Lord Hyeamang at the GU 25.  Five plays later, Hill found Wainwright in the end zone with an 11 yard TD pass and a 14-0 lead.

Columbia Positives

-Hill and the Lions were stellar in the red zone, converting their first five visits inside the 20 into TD's, and doing the classy thing on their sixth visit with time running out and taking a knee.

-A week after giving up five sacks and getting none of their own, Columbia gave up no sacks and netted two.

-After getting burned on some long running plays against Wagner, the Lions allowed just 15 net rushing yards and 0.7 yards per carry.

-The Lions committed no turnovers.

Columbia Negatives

-The Lions waited until they were up 28-0 to give up home run balls, but two long pass plays did result in the two GU TD's.

-There's still a need to put more pressure on opposing QB's.

Columbia MVP

-QB Anders Hill didn't put up huge yards, but he was excellent in the red zone and any day when you get four TD passes and no INT's is a potential MVP day for a QB. Hill is clearly up for getting the most out of Columbia's super sophomore receivers and more importantly, looks more and more like this team's leader every week.

I couldn't agree more with your analysis

Jake-slightly off topic question. Does WKCR still broadcast games? Last season was on and off and no games yet this year. Much prefer the kids to the "pros," no offense. Thx, keep up the good work.

This was Gme where I just felt Columbia was in fact bigger and stronger at every juncture and player position. The potential for ddominance is starting to show. And it feels good.

I could have done without the generally partisan editorializing from the game announcer (a ta tackle for a oss was, for example, was "emphatic") and his voice throughout thye game was way too "Noo Yawkish" to merely ghoulih effect. Who is this cown and how can we dump him?

Goal was to improve in all facets of the game and, according to Coach B, we did just that.
We pressured the their QB a whole lot better and protected Hill better.
Wainwright and Smith are developing into real weapons, tough to cover both all day.
Real test next week against the Pumpkins but until then, let's party like its 2006 !

The announcer sounded like a cross between Chuck Schumer and William Bendix ( I am dating myself with the reference to William Bendix, but in WW II movies he always played the GI from Brooklyn)

Agree with Szath. P.A. guy was a embarrassing "homer".
About every 5th play, he'd end the announcement with "Roar, Lions, Roar"It got to be a joke with the audience.
"Jawgetown" vs. Georgetown.
Keep him, but have him drop the jingoism. Straightforward announcing, a la NFL. We can deal with the accent.

PS.........I am very disturbed by WKCR dropping coverage. I was away last week with no TV, and so was relegated to Twitter announcements re game updates, since WKCR was playing music!!!
I hear that Phil Schapp, the "ayatollah" of KCR, is responsible, being supposedly anti-sports and very influential at the station. He's the long-time professor of jazz at CU who also has spent about 1000 years with a jazz program and de facto runs the station. If you've ever listened in, he likes to spend 15 minutes on the minutiae of a recording and 3 minutes playing it, which is why I switched to WBGO. Phil, we know you're jazz-smart; jut don't prove it endlessly.
What the hell is a campus radio station for, if not to broadcast school games? FB and BB particularly. That leaves around 97% of the rest of the time for Phil.
His attitude apes the traditional CU admin and staff dismissive position towards sports in general. No Longer Acceptable

If we don't get WKCR to cover the games on the FM channel, how about hiring a small plane to fly over Baker Field with a Schaap Must Go banner? It worked once before.
