Columbia Game Notes

Georgetown Game Notes

Leading Story Lines

-Columbia is riding high after a major upset of Lafayette last week, meaning the program will be under the scrutiny of raised expectations for the first time under new Head Coach Jon Poppe.

-Georgetown has lost three straight games by multiple scores in this Lou Little Cup series that used to be a back-and-forth engagement. Either the Hoyas are due to get some revenge, or these programs have started to more permanently go in opposite directions.

3 Columbia Players to Watch

-We don't know if QB Chase Goodwin #15 or QB Cole Freeman #4 is getting the start, but if they are both healthy both of them will certainly get playing time.

-RB Joey Giorgi #25, will likely get a chance to test the Hoya run defense early and often.

-LB AJ George #41, is slated to start in favor of starter CJ Brown (slight injury), and backup Jack Smiechowski (suspended for the 1st half because of a targeting penalty last week). Georgetown may look to test him.

3 Georgetown Players to Watch

-Georgetown QB Danny Lauter #15 was the keystone of the Hoya turnaround last season, but either due to better scouting or the weak protection he's getting from his O-line, Lauter's effectiveness has started to wane. This is his first game ever vs. the Lions.

-LB David Ealey #2 will be tasked with pressuring either Goodwin or Freeman all day.

-WR Cam Pygatt #14 will be used to test the Columbia secondary after it gave up some longer pass plays to Lafayette late in the game.

Gotta stop the deep ball tomorrow.

Lions by 20

I’ll say Lions by 7-10.

TRAP GAME. CLASSIC TRAP GAME!!! We need to jump out early. I am worried that we are starting to believe all of the press releases and are already looking ahead to Princeton.

Columbia 77
Georgetown 9

Best post of the year! And good that you heeded all the "trap game" warnings

48-0 Lafayette prediction biff, let’s hear what you got for tomorrow.

Gtown 24 - Lions 20

I'm not sure we have the talent to win in consecutive weeks

Georgetown head coach has a 10 year record akin to Jim Engles's! In the running for the David Archer Coaching Award! How about Patrick Ewing? How the mighty have fallen and will continue to fall today!

DOC said...

With their 15 sacks in 4 games they have shown proven ability to rush the QB. However when we run the ball down their throats and create manageable down and distance situations that rush becomes moot. We can and will, on our way to another Lou Little Trophy !

Insightful and useful post here.

Jake--Any word on health of Ewan Clarke?

Anonymous said...

Hey 48-0, I’m glad you think that. It means we’ll win in a blowout. Please keep your prediction biffs coming.

Jake said...

No I haven't heard. I'm sure he would to play in front of his hometown friends and family today, though.

What great play calling in the first half!

Despite All Ivy, honorable mention, still not a McFadden fan

Anonymous said...

I hear he doesnt like you either

Anonymous said...

I like the All Ivy guys

Anonymous said...

Lions look sloppy today. But showing grit…

Anonymous said...

“I hear he doesn’t like you either.” Good to see we have eight-year-olds making comments like that on this site.

Anonymous said...

Shitty game for Lions. Cannot win with 4 TO’s on offense.
D played passive all day. Classic let down…onward…

Anonymous said...

Fabish beats the Hoyas…

Anonymous said...

We need Chase back asap. too many bad passes and interceptions. Horrible QB.

Anonymous said...

There is always someone who has to stir the pot. What purpose does that comment serve? Hopefully, that was someone’s attempt at humor. However warped.

Anonymous said...

Lions snatched defeat from hands of victory. Play calling on offense got too cute once inside the red zone. This game was very winnable.

Anonymous said...

As I stated previously, don’t count your eggs before they hatch…I recall a Fabish led offense that mounted 30 points on the Hoyas in the prior contest. From my years of experience watching Columbia football it is evident that this team is not playing with the levels of energy, enthusiasm, effort, and love that are required to win at a high level. It saddens me to see the trophy of the great Lou Little, whom I knew personally, leave Morningside Heights. Onto the Tigers…

Settle down.

Anonymous said...

Fully agree last week everyone was ready to build a statue for Poppy. Marc Fabish was able to craft a symphony of an offensive game plan last year and everyone took his offensive genius for granted. The play this week was incredibly
inconsistent. Hopefully we recover refocus and prepare for the tigers. Roar lions Roar

Nostradamus is that you?

Anonymous said...

No pass rush at all

Anonymous said...

Defense played catch all game. Not aggressive!

Anonymous said...

No spark on the defense today

Anonymous said...

Columbia's defense was in sleep mode today against Georgetown. Impressive catch by Marcus Libman in the final minute of the game, Why isn't he utilized more? Pre-game "Trap Game Syndrome" predictions were accurate

Anonymous said...

Yale's defense is also in sleep mode today as it has yielded 40 points to Cornell in the rain in Ithaca.

Anonymous said...

You can bet that Tony Reno is not happy with Cornell's new coach who had his qb throw for a TD in the final minute of today's game. Final score: Cornell over Yale 47-23.

Anonymous said...

The Cantabs did not exactly distinguish themselves today, either.

Anonymous said...

Disappointing play at QB. Runs hard, plays hard, just bad decisions and under-threw lots of passes that cost us dearly.

Anonymous said...

THIS! Yes the kid plays his heart out but his under thrown passes and interceptions/turn-overs did us in

Anonymous said...

I'd like to see us utilize our TEs a bit more.

Anonymous said...

Team loss. Offense lacked the confidence and swagger they showed vs. Lafayette. Defense wasn’t as aggressive as they were last week. Worried about our def. backfield. We need to tighten up. Optimistic we’ll refocus and re-energize for Princeton.

Anonymous said...

They keep throwing at Mc Fadden... Does anyone else see it?

Anonymous said...

Scarlata used the Fabish offense against us... Lots of screens and horizontal passes. Not a formula for success. ( See last year's 3-7) Poppe will check in with 5or 6 wins this year. Trap game warnings were brilliantly predicted. Freeman made mistakes but made lots of gutsy plays. QB situation is solid with two good ones. Chapman out hurt with the snaps

Anonymous said...

I know you are but what am I?

Anonymous said...

Today's game will be a good learning experience. Fortunately, it was not a conference game. QB needs to learn that being sacked is no where as bad as being intercepted. Center snaps were a significant problem. OL needs to better protect the QB. DL played well but needs to know that there are no penalties for TFLs and QB sacks. Special teams were great as always.

After watching Saturday's performance and the other action around the league, I'm concerned that our opening day victory may be our only win of the year. I'm not sure we have the firepower to beat anyone in the IL.

Anonymous said...

It might sound crazy but we need to look into the future and bring in the freshman QB and see what he can do because we just went to DC to lay an egg with a this backup. Freshman QB could have done the same but at least we can see what he has.

Anonymous said...

Our goal every season should be, “Win the games you are supposed to win, and be competitive when you lose.” That is what makes this loss painful. Should it become a learning experience for the coaches and players, it can then be deemed slightly more tolerable. After Week One, having Harvard and Yale both with losses in the League is rare. It is entirely possible that two losses earns one a share of the title. Let’s just focus, week to week, and not project too far in advance, either positively, or negatively.

Anonymous said...

It's gonna be a tough week for IL power rankings. Who's #1? I suppose Penn is the best choice. Dartmouth would be a weak and default #2. After that it topsy-turvy.

Anonymous said...

What's with the Brown Bears? I thought that they lost a QB?

Anonymous said...

So far, I’ve only watched the fourth quarter. We really need a healthy Goodwin. Tough loss, but time to move on and prep for Princeton. How we bounce back will tell us a lot about the team and the coaching staff. By the way, Lafayette will NOT be our only win this season!

Anonymous said...

Agree, I was being overly pessimistic last nite. With Goodwin we should be competitive. The league may have a lot of parity this year.

Anonymous said...

You are correct - that did sound crazy

Anonymous said...

Secondary was torched and need Goodwin back asap . Horrible loss .

Anonymous said...

Goodwin is a hell of a QB. If we keep him healthy, and Defense gets their momentum back, we should be golden

Anonymous said...

Freeman is very good also! Give both time to gain game experience. Need a Power back to supplement/complement two very shifty/ experienced running backs

Anonymous said...

How about getting more pressure on the opposing QB?

Anonymous said...

Freeman came from Northwestern. He played in 4 games against UTEP, Minnesota, Purdue, and Illinois He has “game experience”

Anonymous said...

No, dont think thats a good idea

Anonymous said...

I recommend the offense score more points and the defense give up fewer points

Anonymous said...

Even with the four turnovers, this loss was clearly on the coaches. They should have for a touchdown when it was 4th and one inside the 5 yard line instead of kicking a field goal. The G'town quarterback was untouched the second half and hitting his receivers regularly so a G'town touchdown was definitely possible. If we had scored a TD rather than a field goal, the game would have been over. Going for a FG also showed no confidence in the offense. And why didn't we blitz the whole game, leaving the G'town QB alll the time in the world. Very poor game plan.

doc/jock said...

That's the ticket!!

doc/jock said...

it is time for me to comment on GT getting three punts inside our 20 yard line. ( I can recall 2 inside the 10 yard line!)
We had only one returner and their punter kicked it away from him until the last punt of the day.

Anonymous said...

Week 2 and you're all over the coaches.

Anonymous said...

The second coming of Hank Stram, Bill Walsh and Jim Martz who was the Interim Coach of the Lions for one season, as the Head Coach of a highly reputed New Jersey prep school, has managed to score a total of 15 points in his last three games. (His record is 1-3.) I really think we should not jump on the present coaching staff.

Anonymous said...

Amen! I think if Goodwin is healthy we’ll beat Princeton. Poppe deserves our support.

Anonymous said...

I doubt the players themselves consider this loss to be "clearly on the coaches" It was not unreasonable for the coaching staff to expect our defense to stop Georgetown from scoring a touchdown in the final couple of minutes of the game. With 20/20 hindsight almost any coaching decision in any sport can be questioned.
