Chasing the Numbers

Just a quick post in the hour or so before the Ivy League weekly player honors are handed out.

Readers of this blog and my 2005-2011 iteration of it here know that my favorite stat to measure QB play is 3rd down passing. It's usually the best way to gauge how good a QB is, especially when it really counts. Unlike "clutch hitting" stats in baseball, the stat is more telling and relies less on situations the QB cannot in any way control.

So how good was Chase Goodwin Saturday on 3rd down?

He was 8-11 for 125 yards, seven 1st downs, a TD, no interceptions, and one taken sack.

That's absolutely stellar.

Have a nice day.

Trivia..last CU QB to open his career 2-0? I'll have to research that as it's been a while, I think.

Joe Green

yes. Marist and G'town. 3-0 could be a more difficult trivia question.

I feel like we’ll have to go a bit further back in the archives for that one. Is the answer “Whoever was QB in ‘35?” lol

SweptPOW awards this week Giorgi and MacDoanld Offensive and defensive POWs

Very impressive debut by Goodwin! Freeman looks good too... Where does that leave the California guy? Too many QBs on the roster?

Can you redshirt a QB in the Ivy ?

Anonymous said...

Don’t believe so.

No redshirts. Kid can sit the year out and not go to school.

Any update on Canty and Townsend?

Also, what do we think the new Ivy power rankings should be? I’d probably have us fourth, though I could be talked into third or fifth.

Seems like a pretty serious injury for Townsend unfortunately. Great kid, incredible football player. Wishing him a speedy recovery

We really need another data point to begin the separation of teams and arrive at meaningful power rankings. As we have seen, just about anybody can beat anybody and the same holds that anybody can lose to anybody!

Here are mine:
Dartmouth - Stays at the top this week, but would obviously fall after a loss at Yale.
Harvard - Should not have lost to Brown maybe a fluke. Impressive victory over UNH.
Yale - Escaped against Central Connecticut.
Penn - competitive on the road against Delaware and Dartmouth.
Columbia - We should defeat Wagner, but the real test is following week at Franklin Field.
Princeton - clearly middle of the pack. Could possibly fall lower as the season progresses.
Brown - Loss to Bryant exposes the Bears. Bryant was dominated in earlier losses to their three legitimate opponents.
Cornell - Albany is not a bad team at all. But the Big Red were dominated by Marmadukes at Schoelkopf.

we are currently ranked 3rd as of Monday

How is Yale #3 and Cornell #8 after week 2 result? Albany is a good team. Princeton should be #8.

Who cares?

We do

Columbia moved up to #3 this week

Very good analysis from someone who really knows what he is talking about. Is Dartmouth the best or do I smell a 3 way tie this year?
