Columbia Game Notes

Cornell Game Notes

Leading Story Lines

-Columbia is facing an extremely rare chance to grab a share of the Ivy title. A win over Cornell and a loss by Harvard vs. Yale would clinch a tite for championship for the Lions for the first time since 1961.

-Cornell has a chance to clinch its first winning conference record since 2005.

-Freshman Columbia QB Caleb Sanchez will be getting his second start after looking solid in his starting debut last week.

3 Lions to Watch

-WR Bryson Canty #2 is wrapping up his extraordinary, if injury-shortened, career with a chance to grab the Bushnell Cup for offensive player of the year depending on his performance in the season finale.

-LB Jack Smiechowski #15 had a monster game at Brown last week where two of his hits were reviewed for targeting, but waved off. The refs will clearly be watching Smiechowski closely, but he will still likely play a major role in stopping Cornell QB Jameson Wang during his frequent scrambles and runs.

-RB Joey Giorgi #25 may play a bigger role than usual in his final game, especially if the winds at Spuyten Duyvil are blowing hard enough to impede the passing game.

3 Big Red to Watch

-WR Sam Musungu #3 is a breakout sophomore star for Cornell this year and often does much of his damage with yards after the catch.

-LB Luke Banbury #25 is a bright spot for the Big Red defense.

-TE Ryder Kurtz #86 has been an excellent receiving security blanket for Wang for much of the season and could also play a bigger role if the wind significantly shortens the passing game for both teams.

No matter what happens what a season hats off to both coach Poppy and yes coach Fabish who doesn’t get the respect he deserves. I’m tired of everyone disrespecting a man who put us heart and soul into this program both deserve our respect and admiration and this old lion will do what’s right. Roar Lion Roar!

Agree. Very impressed with Poppe. I had my doubts about this team after Dartmouth completely dominated us. But the mark of a good coach and staff is resiliency and how a team bounces back. Ever since that game the team has played extremely well

Not sure they played “extremely well” vs Harvard. We are 2-2 the past 4 games

The reason I don't visit this blog as much as I used to is the increasingly negative mix of dime store commentary from the gallery. It becomes so tiring to hear thoughtless negativity...perhaps from players or their parents or perhaps because this is just how digital discourse has become

I much favor the Voy Ivy Forum...which in the main sticks to positive or constructive commentary.

What objective follower of Ivy football could possibly not be impressed with Poppe, his staff and the players on this team. For someone who has followed the Lions since Doug Jackson and Mike Telep, this year has been an eye-opener, and hopefully a harbinger of what's to come. How about the CU schools playing the last game for the championship soon?

Well said couldn’t agree more

Don Jackson, Mike Jones, Paul Kaliades, Frank Dermody, John Sefcik, Charles Johnson, Mike Evans. For one brief moment! 6-3 in 1971. The Cardiac Kids. Telep did not come until 1972.

For all those bleeding hearts, who insist on bloodying up this site, Mark Sanchez is one of two quarterbacks who went to the conference championship in their first two seasons playing in the NFL. (Ben Roethlisberger is the other.)
Rather ironically, yesterday was the anniversary of the “Butt Fumble”, November 22, 2012. For which is the esteemed Sanchez better known? How about leaving the name “Fabish” best unsaid? He was a dismal failure, and given umpteen more chances would not have taken the team to where they are now. Do us all a favor, and save your efforts to reconstruct his reputation to yourselves.

Give me the classy open field slide my dude!

Shut up, man. Nobody cares about Mark Sanchez or any of this nonsense.

Heard that Mark Fabish will be recognized at senior day for his service to the program

I heard Kamala is making an appearance at halftime with Sleepy Joe

You're obsessed with him. You love him.

Fact of the matter is: 1) Poppe was a great hire 2) Fabish was a poor hire 3) Bagnoli turned out to be a mediocre hire 4) WE beat Medicare

Your obsession with Fabish is creepy.

What an exciting time! Forever grateful for the solid foundation Fabish built, brick by brick. Roar Lions, Roar!

Wonderful season! Seitu Smith and Stovall BIG keys to Poppe Success! How about the players!

Mark Fabish and Jon Poppe have each been a head coach for two years.
Mark Fabish’s record: 3-7 and 2-7; 5-14
Jon Poppe’s record: 10-2 and 7-3. 17-3
I rest my case.
An amazing team effort.
Ask yourself if the key 5th year Seniors come back without a coaching change.
Believe what you want, but stop insulting us by invoking “Fabish”.

We did it!!!!!! Ivy League champs!!!! Coach Poppe and staff deserve so much credit, as do the players and their families. Also Peter Pilling! I’m so happy right now!

I am gob smacked and doing back flips here in Shanghai! Ivy Champs. They picked us to finish last and instead we tied for first.

Thank you Yale for the assist

Thank you players and coaches.

You have made this 64 year old Alum a happy, happy man
