Leading Story Lines
-The Lions and Bears are trying to finish strong after being in the thick of the Ivy championship race earlier this season.
-Brown this year is yet another offensive powerhouse, and will be taking on one of the Ivy League's best defenses.
-Columbia may be shuffling its QB situation before or during this game.
3 Lions to Watch
-QB Cole Freeman #4 may or may not start or complete this game. The Lions may go with freshman QB Caleb Sanchez #8 at some point.
-S Hayden McDonald #3 is Columbia's top ball hawking DB going up against a Brown QB that has thrown 11 interceptions already this year.
-WR Bryson Canty #2 is one of the the Ivy League's most dynamic receivers who will be going up against a Brown pass defense that's already allowed 18 TD passes.
3 Bears to Watch
-DB Tim Malo #9 has been thrust into the lead defender role for Brown since the injury to NFL prospect Isaiah Reed.
-WR Mark Mahoney #88 is the top receiver in Brown's pass happy offense.
-QB Jake Wilcox #3 is of course in focus because he is the starting QB, but watch him closely and decide whether some of the hype about him as a possible NFL prospect is justified.

Let's Go Lions!
Sanchez a surprise start looks poised. Pass pro should be better . Once again the red zone
poses a problem. We better find some way to pressure Wilcox …
How does Sanchez look ?
Kid looks good for a freshman teceivers to do their part though.
Canty stiff arms not one, but two defenders after a great catch on his way to the end zone! Highlight reel.
Rough day for the kicking game.
Looks like Mahomes
Harvard and Dartmouth are loosing. I said 3 way tie by end of day.
I was the one who said that
oooh baby!
Correction - Dartmouth is winning and Harvard is tied
Dartmouth is fading, but I think the Crimson wins it. Wish it wasn't so. It will be all up to Yale next week.
Excellent win. Smart FB play by Hebb to take the slide before what would have been an easy TD
21-12 and we we could have walked in to go up another 6
Mark who? Eldo? 1st year record, so far.. 6-3, Poppe Era Ends Mediocrity
PEEM it is!
Please, please, quick, someone remind us how the foundation of this team was built by others.
Good win for the Lions! We should all be proud of the team and where we are going into the last game of the season. Probably not wise to suggest 100 years of football futility is over, but we are on the right path now. Go Lions!
Sanchez is as smooth and calm as he can be.
Tough ask for Yale to win in Cambridge. National television, so maybe pride kicks in. If the game was in New Haven, maybe.
Imagine if a prior Interim Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator ever understood good things happen when you through the ball downfield? How I miss the quick throws to the sidelines?
The Lions won today. Today. They played great and are in the hunt for the title with one game to go. Try to focus.
Outstanding game from the Lions!
Great QB play from the frosh, and platooning as well. Outstanding O-line play. Receivers? Great! Defense? Proved me wrong on the scoring end!
In the ancient concrete mausoleum in Allston next weekend, rootin' for Eli! (and watching Lions on the pocket viewing machine).
In lumine tuo!
Sanchez is in the conversation for #1 QB next year; he has a big arm and can see the field. The 12 for 27 is misleading—I counted several dropped balls and a few more 50/50 balls. That we didn’t gather in. Canty looks like he can play on Sundays. I actually think we left 2 TDs on the field in the first half.
For 58 minutes the defense played lights out.
#15 LB for Lions with second targeting call of the season. Undisciplined.
CUFB Alum
I agree. The dropped/muffed passes looked more ominous in the moment...
Penn choked. Cornell took care of business. Anything can happen next wk!
Columbia alums. Show your mettle and support the team.
We have a shot at an Ivy title next Saturday.
Show that you care about CUFB!
Libman with several dropped balls. Get focused young man!
Columbia kicker with one of worst days in Columbia kicker history.
What’s his story?
Sanchez did well. Against the worst defense in the league. Definitely better than the other options we currently have. Comparisons to Mahomes is really silly. Just stop it!
We beat Cornell and Yale beats Harvard, we share an Ivy Title!
Let that sink in!!!
Re our kicker—all misses were into a fierce wind.
#15 is Jack S., junior LB and grandson of Tom O’Connor. He is an excellent player but needs to control himself a little better. Fierce tackler.
Too many dropped passes for you to say he well and did it against the worst defense. He did amazing knowing he’s only a freshman and has been on campus only a little over two months.
Soft
Not sure I understand targeting anymore. Shoulder pad hits anywhere above chest level are targeting ? Turn it into flag football why dont ya ? Kuddos to the Columbia defense who held a very dangerous opponent virtually scoreless until junk time and made 4 stops on 4th down ! Bravo Mr Sanchez in your first start ( and the surrounding cast that blocked and fought for every inch) ! Bravo Mr Canty - you are NFL bound ! No matter what, gentlemen ,we are playing with house money- Lets Go Yale !
Penn lost a heartbreaker to Harvard.
These were the worst announcers ever! They may as well had being sitting on the Brown's bench wearing Brown's uniforms! Not only were they biased toward Brown, but they sounded like cheerleaders and were unashamedly routing for Brown.
Worse than Tim Murphy?
We should have won that game by 40 points. Love what we have done, but we had two trips to the red zone in the first half and came up with a goose egg. Great coaching job, but if we had gone to Sanchez earlier in the year we probably wou;d have been undefeated. Tremendous talent, and paired with Canty unstoppable. Let’s go out in style against the aggies from Cornell.
Cornell is no joke. May have best QB in league. I know Poppe will have the boys focused this week
Sanchez was excellent. Giorgi also played great. Loved the fake punt - that's a "coach of the year" kind of call. Say what you want about Brown's defense, Sanchez will be Ivy Rookie of the Week this week. (Recall that Brown beat Harvard and also Georgetown -- two of our three losses.) Even his incomplete passes were largely on target, several as noted above were dropped. Also noted above is that the wind was horrible. I was surprised we kept trying the field goals into that wind. Nonetheless, next week brings us yet another historic and meaningful game for us. How great to be in this situation. Cornell will be revved up for Saturday's game and will have a large delegation. Yale has a good if not inconsistent team; it is quite realistic to look for Yale to knock off Harvard and for Columbia to top Cornell for the Empire State Cup! (And more.)
One other thing. Just checked the stats. I agree Cornell QB Wang is very good. However, even in today's win over a Dartmouth team that looked totally outclassed and dominated, Wang threw three interceptions. I'm not sure who is the best QB in the league. But Deprima continues to be my favorite and he isn't really the regular/starting QB.
Liability
Sanchez did very well. Let’s keep in mind that he has only been on campus for over two months and he only has been getting reps with the 1’s for over a week. He also is his first official start and can be a bit rusty during game time but besides he made a few throws that amazed me, especially in third quarter when he went side line to side line. Not many can make that throw
Stay classy San Diego
Werent both targeting flags picked up after review?
"If we had gone to Sanchez earlier in the year we would have been undefeated". Stupid.
Sanchez is a special talent. He sees the field and has a big arm. Interesting battle for #1 QB is being set up for next year.
Columbia's Play of the Year has to be the fake punt/28 yard run that the Lions executed perfectly. Our defensive lineman Josh Powell gained 28 yards on that play. Assuming that was Powell's only run of the season that means he is averaging a healthy 28 yards a carry.
Where was Raleigh Erwin?
CUFB Alum
Our D is beyond phenomenal. Thise guys have given us legit chances every week, and their domination against Yale saved the season. Great team win today, and Sanchez looked really, really good. Three TD passes, no turnovers, and just about every pass on target. This is the start of something special. I’m not sure how anyone besides Poppe can be the IL coach of the year, especially after we were picked last!
Goodwin was excellent before injury.
Agreed. Think it’s clear that Goodwin and Sanchez are our two top guns.
Mahomes reminds me of Sanchez.
must've been a math major
Amazing to have Sanchez and Goodwin as the two top gunslingers. Future looks bright. Now let’s go get some WR’s
lol. If he gains 0 yards on his next carry, he will still be averaging 14 yards per carry. Very impressive.
