Podcast Episode 3: Something Old, Something New

Joshua Powell

Today’s podcast looks at two Columbia D-lineman. One is a rising senior, and the other is an incoming freshman. They both represent important reasons to be excited about the 2025 season.

I’ll also add some quick notes on three other incoming freshmen.

The rising senior is Joshua Powell and the incoming freshman is Austin Coronado, (DE/OLB 6'3" 240) from St. John Bosco HS, in the Inland Empire, CA.

The team had a rousing tug-o-war competition today. It looked very spirited and exciting.

As Dick Vitale used to say " Blow out City, Baby! With ENGLES on the short side AGAIN

Anonymous said...

Hey man, how did you know that Brown would defeat Columbia tonight by exactly 25 points? I'm impressed.

Anonymous said...

Jim looked completely lost tonight as our guys were slaughtered by Brown. If Lance Medow watched the game on ESPN+ he probably was laughing the whole time.

Anonymous said...

Two teams going in completely opposite directions. I figured we’d struggle to score and Brown would not, and that it would definitely be 20 plus. A final margin of 25 just seemed where I thought it would land. Thankfully I didn’t watch. It’s doing to be worse tomorrow—I’d say Yale by 35, with Poulakidas torching us for 40. He’s been struggling of late, but our “defense” will be just what the doctor ordered!

Anonymous said...

Moron Teflon: “Look, I have great freshman. Just imagine how good we’ll be in a few years.” Say, where have we heard that before?

Anonymous said...

Imagine that I never thought that it would come to this ! Longing for the days of Armand Hill and Joe Jones, two great bench coaches! Wait, I just woke up from that scary dream! Wait again! Look who the president is! Earth to Pilling, Come in Pilling... Please! END THE ENGLES nightmare and he will burn the video he has!

Anonymous said...

"Brown should beat us by 25 tonight." Wow. Right On!!!! Amazing. What is your prediction for the Columbia-Yale Game tonight?

Anonymous said...

Engles waived the white flag early last night against Brown by removing Avery Brown., Bedri and Robleido early in the game and replacing them with the two freshmen backcourt players. It was a cynical move by Engles to persuade his few remaining supporters that he should be retained for a tenth miserable year. What a disaster Columbia Men's Basketball has become under Pilling and Engles!

Anonymous said...

The Columbia Men's Basketball Program hit an all-time low last night as the hapless Lions lost to Brown by 25 points as Engles walked the sideline by himself after unceremoniously taking his veteran players out of the game.

Anonymous said...

I think the doors get blown off tonight (even more so than they were last night). Think I posted this elsewhere, but I think we lose by 35, and Poulakidas (if Jones keeps him in long enough for this to happen) torches us for 40, a new career high.

That win against Villanova seems seasons ago... I suppose De La Rosa is hurt which hasn't helped but the blowouts as of late make it seem like we are playing in the SEC or B1G and not the Ivy. Unfortunately I have to attend tonight's game which will be a bloodbath...

Anonymous said...

An embarrassing blowout—except for the two first year guards everybody else mailed it in—I will never attend or watch another MBB Columbia MBB game until Engles is fired.

Anonymous said...

As you suggested, the Yale Basketball Team is capable of demolishing Columbia tonight, by almost any amount of points it chooses. However, Coach Jones won't let that happen for various reasons I would expect Yale to win by about the same number of points as Brown did last night---25 points.

My freshman year was Penders' first and the Varsity was dreadful, like 1-23. But my class Oenders' first recruits (Elmer Love, Jeff Coombes, Gene Bentz, Ed Shockley, Mike Willhite) and the Freshman team had quality wins. Penders' next class had Alton Byrd, Rickie Free, Shane Cotner, and Juan Mitchell. And the program was in business. Huge wins over 4th ranked Rutgers at the old RAC (I was there), Seton Hall on the road, St. John's at home, Princeton on the road, Penn (which went to the Final Four that year) at home. My point is unlike football, a couple of good recruiting classes and good, tactical coaching can turn things around pretty quickly. The current roster has some talent, which would benefit immensely from a couple of quality players and a charismatic coach. If football can do it, why not hoops?

Anonymous said...

Our in-house basketball prophet just missed the daily double as Yale' defeated Columbia in Men's Basketball tonightby a 90-64 score in New Haven. My congratulations to him for picking Brown to defeat Columbia by 25 points in the Lions first game of the weekend and then just missing by one point tonight loss to Yale. The Lions are now 1-10 this season in the ivy League with three games remaining. The Lions seem likely to finish in the Ivy League cellar with a 1-13 record. . Columbia's Head Coach Lucky Jim Engles appears to have secured another contract extension from his benefactor Peter Pilling based upon his sole Ivy League victory this season. While it is difficult for Columbia fans to keep track of all of Lucky's losses, it does see likely that his record at the end of the season will be 24-88 overall in the Ivies.

For the record, I’m the guy who said we’d lose to Brown by 25. I predicted we’d fall to Yale by 30. So I was a bit off with the latter forecast. (I also mentioned that Poulakidas would drop 40 on us if Jones left him in long enough.) For what it’s worth, there was another poster who put tonight’s margin at around 25, so he was closer than I was. For what it’s worth, I’m also the guy that predicted we’d go 4-10 in Ivy play (i said this before conference play began, back when other people were telling me we’d win 7-9 games in the league). But looks like I was dead wrong about 4-10: I now seriously doubt we end up anywhere besides 1-13. Fire Engles yesterday.

Anonymous said...

Whom would you like to see replace Engles? Please resist the temptation to respond with “Anyone.”

Anonymous said...

Larrañaga

Anonymous said...

That’s a very interesting idea. He is an NY native, and he hates the NIL landscape.

Anonymous said...

Will there be a QB competition? We have Goodwin and Sanchez and I frankly find it tough to choose between both of them. Will we ever put both of them on the field together?

Anonymous said...

I think there will certainly be a competition between Sanchez and Goodwin. Freeman was inconsistent but his performance against Yale made the season. Sanchez was great filling in late in the season but I still think Goodwin was better. He was so accurate and efficient early on.

Anonymous said...

I agree Goodwin is the better player. However, keep in mind he took a huge leap between his FY season to his Soph season. So there are no static comparisons.

I am also intrigued by the development of Freeman utilized in a true read option RPO game. Last year it never really looked smooth to me - most of the times it was called qb runs. If this gets worked on all Spring perhaps the Lions can come into the season running 2 very different offenses efficiently. Bery tough on opposing defenses

Now my turn: does Coach Sto go back to his familiar 4-3 alignment, stay with the 3-4 or play a mix? DT loses a lot of beef, that will impact his decision

Anonymous said...

Are there enough for a solid 2 deep in the 3-4?

Tirso Abanto said...

Think Goodwin as captain has to be our number one. The RPO with Freeman is an interesting idea. What do you guys think is our biggest area of focus heading into season two?

Anonymous said...

There will not be three QBs in any schools rotation. It’s #1 and #2. That’s it

Anonymous said...

Zip it.

Anonymous said...

Freeman could come in for a few running plays

Anonymous said...

Freeman may be able to play RB

Anonymous said...

Think he’s better suited for a slot receiver. Good athlete, competitive and a huge heart. Great target for Goodwin either as primary short yardage or outlet.

Anonymous said...

Sorry but imho qb is only position he can play. Not nearly fast enough for other skill positions

Anonymous said...

He's very fast

Anonymous said...

Maybe he is, don’t know for sure but he ran well against Yale. Doesn’t have to be real fast at slot for short yardage - find space and catch the ball. Think he can do that well. 5 to 7 yards in the right circumstance is golden.

Anonymous said...

If Goodwin can remain healthy, I think the starting job is his to lose I think. I am concerned about losing a superb talent like Canty. Sanchez is a great option so we have an embarrassment of riches at the QB position.

Anonymous said...

I worry that Sanchez won't want to wait until his senior year to be the #1 guy.

Anonymous said...

We had three QB's play significant minutes this year and each made notable contributions to the team's success. Sanchez is clearly a ready for Prime Time talent but even as a No.2 he could become the No.1 on a moment's notice.

Anonymous said...

Might not be enough for him.

Anonymous said...

Jury’s still out on Sanchez

When Pilling gonna boot Engles?

Anonymous said...

It is never go ten years ing to happen. Obviously, A.D. Pilling is unable to admit that he made an error in hiring Engles almost tthat en years ago and retaining him this long. Also, Engles obviously knows something about his boss that Pilling does not want ot be made public.

Anonymous said...

Zippit!!! Pilling s great! You're nothing!!!! Everyone on the team loves Engles, expecially the guys who haven't played much. Pilling has done a wonderful job this year and the team will finish with three big wins. Next year the team will go undefeated in the Ivy League.

Anonymous said...

This is hilarious, Jim. You’re not going to win another game at Columbia, and everyone knows you’re an awful “coach.” Bye bye!

Zippit. You mean nothing. you are paranoid. Go back home. Engles has been an overachiever at Columbia. His players love him, his assistant coaches all love him, Gerry loved him, and if Columbia doesn't want him he' will go back home to N.J.I.T. Columbia Men's Basketball will go 14-0 under Engles next season. And Columbia will easily win its last three games to finish 4-10.

You’re right about people’s expectations. Coaches have never been fired during the season. It’s absolutely never ever happened, so why would people even suggest such a thing. It’s always best to just let a coach keep losing indefinitely. If necessary, even re-up him so that he can try for his fourth 1-13 season in conference.

Anonymous said...

As duds go, Engles (aka Lucky Jim, Jimmy Teflon, Moron Teflon, and Jungle Jim) has to be in the Hall of Fame.

Anonymous said...

I’ve noticed that Engles’ win-loss record this season has stopped getting updated on Wikipedia, even as the losses continue to mount. A serious question for the group: who’s been worse: the Mangurian candidate or Jimmy Teflon? Talk about unpleasant choices…

Anonymous said...

Yes. 10 am

Tirso Abantos said...

I’ll say that the Manchurian candidate was worse. Besides both coaches not having a clue, they were awful in very different ways, in my opinion. Had the Manchurian candidate lasted as long as Engles, who knows if we’d still have a football program. The good news is that once Engles is gone, it won’t take that long for a semi-decent coach to get us to .500 in the IL, especially with a few good recruits and some judicious decisions near the end of those close games Engles has shown an extraordinary knack for completely pissing away. I’d love for someone to tell us what Engles’ record at Columbia is in IL games decided by 5 points or less.

Anonymous said...

This year it’s 1-4.

Anonymous said...

And last year 1-3.

Anonymous said...

If my math is correct, it looks Engles has gone 13-22 in IL games decided by 5 points or less. The breakdown, from his first year to his last, is as follows:
4-4
1-4
4-5
0-2
1-0
1-0
1-3
1-4

What’s really interesting is that almost none of his (very few) league victories have been convincing wins, especially in the last six years or so. Granted we hardly ever win in conference, but when we do, it never seems to be by more than a few points. So I’m guessing that Engles’ record in IL games decided by 10 points or less is much, much worse. Though it’s not like anybody should be screaming from the rooftops about 13-22.

Anonymous said...

Hey Anonymous, looks like you’re right. In IL games decided by 10 points or less, Engles is a horrid 18-41. And because we often get blown out but rarely blow anyone else out, he probably wins less than 15% of IL games decided by 15 points or more. Anyway, here are the numbers for games in conference decided by 10 or less.
4-6
3-6
5-6
0-7
1-3
2-2
2-5
1-6

Anonymous said...

Just curious, how much better was Kyle Smith?

Anonymous said...

A lot

Anonymous said...

Yes, Kyle was better than Jimmy Teflon in every respect. I assume everyone knows that Stanford is now paying him a salary of a couple of million dollars per year + perks after buying out his Head Coach contract at Washington State last year for $750,000.00. Unlike Teflon, Kyle is a great game coach and recruiter. Most important, Kyle was and is a "winner."

Anonymous said...

So let me get this straight—out of the 112 Ivy games he’s coached (including our game against Cornell on Saturday), Engles has won EXACTLY THREE by 15 points or more? How on God’s green earth is this clown still our coach?

Anonymous said...

If Pilling doesn't fire Engles by next Monday, the Columbia Men''s Basketball Team and its few remaining fans are doomed to still another horrific season.

Anonymous said...

Please do the research. What was Kyle's record for league games decided by less than 5 points?

Anonymous said...

What if he does it Tuesday, dipshit?

Anonymous said...

Who is protecting Engles? Is the supposed Sherwin codicil what’s driving this?

Anonymous said...

That's all fake news. Something like that would never pass the legal/compliance standard. "Pay for play" is the last thing schools allow these days.

Anonymous said...

You have several options for telling Columbia University how we may use your bequest once we receive it. They are:

An Unrestricted Bequest: This is a gift for our general purposes. This can be the most useful kind of gift because it allows us to put your gift to the best possible use at the time we receive it.
A Restricted Bequest: This is a gift for a specific use, such as a special project or program that is important to you. It is best for you to consult with us before placing restrictions on your bequest to be sure we can carry out your wishes.

Anonymous said...

Clearly not to be used to keep someone employed, doofus.

Anonymous said...

Just like a coach “clearly” wouldn’t be permitted to keep his job at Columbia with no winning seasons over almost a decade?

Anonymous said...

Unfortunately, that has in fact been the case, asswipe.

Anonymous said...

Ok, I get it. Name-calling is your strong suit. But reading comprehension definitely is not, as your “unfortunately…” shows you don’t understand a pretty straightforward point I was making about things people claim are “clearly” true, often without any evidence. That’s on you.

El Carnicero said...

Ok, boss. I’ll do the research. Wikipedia doesn’t have the game results for Smith’s first two seasons, but I’ll at least be able to get the numbers for the rest. Can look for other sources for his first two seasons.

El Carnicero said...

Okay, here are the numbers for Kyle Smith. He went 11-19 in IL games decided by 5 points or less:
2-2
2-5
0-6
2-1
1-3
4-2

What’s telling is that we had many more convincing victories under Smith (relative to the number we’ve had under Engles). I’ve not crunched the other numbers yet, but I can tell you Smith had A LOT more 15pt.+ wins in conference.

El Carnicero said...

Ok, Smith’s record in Ivy games won by 10 points or less is 18-32. Here’s the breakdown by year.
3-4
3-7
1-8
4-5
2-6
5-2

Not great, but considerably better than Engles. Where Smith really shone was in blowouts (games decided by at least 15 points). I’ll post those numbers in a sec.

El Carnicero said...

In IL games decided by at least 15 points, Kyle Smith went 14-7. Engles, on the other hand, has gone 3-30. What’s even more telling is that in each of Smith’s last three campaigns, his season win total in this category matched Engles’ total wins in this category FOR HIS CAREER at Columbia. Here are Smith’s numbers for each year.
2-2
1-1
2-2
3-1
3-0
3-1

Key takeaways: Engles has actually fared slightly better than Smith in IL games decided by 5 points or less (13-22 versus 11-19). In IL games decided by 10 points or less, Smith has been considerably better than Engles (though still not great) at 18-32 versus 18-41. But it’s no contest when the margin of victory is at least 15 points in IL games: Smith is 14-7, whereas Engles is 3-30. Also keep in mind that Smith coached six seasons at Columbia, whereas Engles has been around for eight. Smith enjoyed two winning IL campaigns, both 3rd place finishes, as well as 4 seasons out of 6 with an overall record of .500 or better. He also never won fewer than 12 games in a season and never fewer than 4 in conference. Engles has never had a winning record in conference or overall at Columbia, and he has had three 1-13 Ivy campaigns (I’m assuming we get demolished tomorrow in Ithaca), with three 5-9 IL seasons (good for fifth place) being his high water mark.

Anonymous said...

That’s correct. Engles has coached 112 IL games at Columbia and won a grand total of 3 by 15 points or more. Kyle Smith, by contrast, coached 84 IL games at Columbia and won 14 of them by 15 points or more. In six seasons, Smith won 37 IL contests (37-47); in eight seasons, Engles has won 24 (24-88). With just two more seasons than Smith, Engles has nearly doubled the former’s in-conference loss total!

You’re right—Arminda Hill’s performance was terribly embarrassing. That last year of 0-14 was especially painful. If memory serves, that was also around the time he got into it with members of the Cornell band and had to publicly apologize. Very classy!

Anonymous said...

*Armond Hill. The Manchurian candidate, Jimmy Teflon, and Armond Hammer—quite the trifecta!

Anonymous said...

From Wikipedia: “In eight seasons as head coach of the Lions, Hill was unable to lead the team to a winning campaign and compiled a 72–141 record. On March 10, 2003, two days after Columbia finished with a 2–25 record (0–14 in Ivy League play), the worst season in the school's 103-year basketball history, Hill was fired.”

Anonymous said...

Engles is 71-150 through eight seasons at CU, even worse than Hill.

Anonymous said...

Indeed. Also 24-88 in conference. The mind boggles. Let’s get this sorted, Peter.

Anonymous said...

The longer Pilling lets Jimmy Teflon remain the coach, the hotter his own seat (Pilling’s becomes). My guess is that our AD is about to retire and let someone else deal with it. But that’s just a guess, based purely on the fact that nothing has been done yet (which is pretty unbelievable, when you think about it). One also wonders if the purported Sherwin codicil continues to thwart all attempts at the removal of Jungle Jim.

Not super keen on hiring another former Columbia assistant coach. I know he was with Smith, but there was also a bit of scandal down at Florida. Maybe best to steer clear of any Columbia connections and go for someone who has been part of a staff that has won the Ivies or done something comparable elsewhere (without unlimited resources).

Fliss Henderson "quit" (per a comment way above) because she has a bad back. Hopefully her health will improve so that she returns to women's hoops next season. Megan has recruited two top 150 players for next season: a 4x Idaho all-state 5'11 guard with all kinds of D-1 big time offers and a 6'4 center from Massachusetts with a number of good D- 1 big time offers who is a much bigger version of Susie Rafiu. Also a 5'10 guard who is on the Greek Junior national team. Knowing Megan she probably isn't done yet with her incoming class. Engles was in the last year of his contract so Peter Pilling did the right thing by announcing a resignation as opposed to a firing. Contrast that with Penn's Steve Donohue who got dumped on Monday. The Penn AD press release made it clear he was fired. On to spring football and baseball! The spring football inter squad game is indeed on April 26, 10 am to noon. Unless you're on the gate list, get street parking. I park at the Target Lot at 225th St. off Broadway in the Bronx just across the bridge and walk 5 minutes to Baker. Or I find street parking on Broadway which is metered and good for two hours before you need to meter up again. These are Inwood meter charges rather than midtown or UWS Manhattan ones. See you at the spring game. And as I said to coach Jon Poppe on the field after the Cornell game, "From last to first!" He smiled and repeated the same line, as did his Dad Bill 70C, my Beta fraternity brother at CU.

All three of the women basketball commits have a chance to see immediate action in the starting rotation. Shea Shippen appears to be a bigger version of Kitty Henderson and Alicia Mitchell at a skilled 6'4" will give the Lions the height they need to play any time in the country, I hope Fliss can come back from her serious injury.

Caleb Sanchez is a good quarterback.

Columbia is the #1 seed in the Ivy Leagye Tournament starting tomorrow afternoon

what serious injury did Fliss have? I thought she just gave up B ball.

Anonymous said...

Back. Not serious though.

I agree Caleb Sanchez is a good QB. If it wasn’t for him Columbia wouldn’t have share the Ivy League championship. Great call on coach Poppe for making that call.

Any value in running the wishbone with 4 QBs in the backfield next year?

Wow, Engles is finally out!!!!!! Hoorah!!!!

We should run the pistol next year with Freeman behind the QB.

An excellent Bucknell WBB is in the transfer portal—perhaps lightening will strike twice as per Collins

I like the coach from NYU who has really created a winning program there albeit at the Div III level. He spent 11 years at Colgate in a winning Div I program and is a Penn grad. His bio on the NYU website says he lives in New Jersey with his wife and children so perhaps we would be more interesting to him than Penn which is sure to offer him.

The NYU Violets.

Feel like something should be said about the loss of Columbia's head strength and conditioning coach, Rob Gilmartin. This is a significant loss for the program as the boys had a lot of respect for him and responded this his work in the weight room. He's played a major part in the team's improvement over the years getting the players bigger and stronger.

Coach Gilmartin was a good guy and battled cancer valiantly for several year. He was very inspirational to the team and those around him. He will be missed!

NYU Coach has a seriously impressive CV--a Wharton degree, played for Dunphy and once held the Penn season assist record, and guided the Violets to a one-loss season and three NCAA tourney invites. And he and his wife and three kids in Glen Ridge NJ, an easy commute. Seems a no-brainer for us.

Agree but he probably takes the Penn job.

I think we should put Freeman at WR and run the flea flicker a lot. Good idea?
