Spring Preview

Kevin Lempa

Head Coach Pete Mangurian gave an interview to the Spectator today giving some insight into where the program is now.

The highlight was the coach's assessment of QB Trevor McDonagh and how he has improved.

It's a very basic coaching rule not to hand starting jobs over to players who haven't officially joined the team yet. I have no doubt that McDonagh is making great strides, but let's see what shakes out on the field.

As for Brett Nottingham being the answer to every question, well no one says that.

In fact, the more I think about it the more I realize we have several questions on defense that neither Nottingham nor McDonagh can answer:

-How will the team respond to the loss of the super DC Kevin Lempa?

-How will the team respond to the loss of Josh Martin, Mike Waller and Ryan Murphy? Will the return of Seyi Adebayo be enough to fill those gaps?

-Who are the linebackers who will start along with the super Zach Olinger and make sure he's not overtaxed at the position?

Hopefully we'll get some answers to those questions tomorrow night.

FB team in the stands, watching a team that doesn't quit, even after falling behind early in both games!

One more observation, which occurred to me sitting in the stands watching us refuse to fold after Dartmouth tied it up in the ninth. M there is no quit in this team. They seem to reflect the personality of Brett Boretti. And who says you can't have a winning program at Baker Field. These players are winners. And who says you should not play a major schedule before the Ivy season? Our baseball team took on national powers. We now have the facilities for a winning program in football as well. I can't be there tonight but hopefully we will have extensive reports from Jake and others.

Who's got some dope on the scrimmage? Can't bear the silence.

Second game was great. Injured former starting senior pitcher comes in and shuts the door on a very good hitting Dartmouth BB team. Regarding fielding; they are suspect. Dartmouth had six (6) errors on the day to CU's ONE!
In case anonymous is interested in knowing how to win, the answer is simple. You have to make the plays! If CU football gets folks who can make the plays, we will win. Period.

There were no roster sheets for the FB scrimmage, so a little difficult to follow who was who. Overall seemed to be good balance between the O and the D, i.e., neither seemed to be significantly ahead of the other. Grose (sp?) our WR is back and looked healthy, i.e., appeared to have his speed back. Thaxton made a beautiful int. Augie Braddock showed some nice running skills, twisting and turning and barreling ahead. Some position changes, e.g., Mingo at safety, Braddock at RB..

Our batters clobbered the Dartmouth pitching staff for an amazing 29 hits. We were hitting deep line drives all day. Jordan Serena had three line drive doubles in game two. The entire lineup came up swinging. Our guys were looking for base hits and not walks. Our defense was perfect. Fischer was terrific behind the plate. Borretti managed a great game against a good veteran manager. The suicide squeeze was a smart call and was beautifully executed. Speer was nasty on the mound in game one. The freshman, Kevin Roy, showed amazing skill and poise in getting Dartmouth out in the tenth after loading the bases. Stefan Olson looked like a major league pitcher in striking out six Dartmouth batters in the last three innings. Several of the players from Columbia and Dartmouth seem likely to be drafted this year or next. If there were any major league scouts at Satow Stadium today, they had to be impressed with the Lion bats and pitching. Dartmouth also has a couple of promising players. Congratulations to the Columbia Baseball team on winning the Ivy League Championship.

When they found themselves trailing early in both games, the Lions bought what a famous philosopher said years ago: You gotta believe.
Generally good camera coverage, images via the Ivy site, perhaps indicating the new digital service will be worthwhile.

Jake, Coach tweeted that 7,19,31,58,8,28 and TEs did well. I wasn't there. Who can amplify? PS, he also said 2013 recruits were there.
