Fordham Update

For Columbia, the season opener at Wien Stadium looks like an invitation to a slaughterhouse.

Here's a look at the news Fordham has been making since the spring.

The Rams have no less than SIX preseason All Americans. There are even more players named to the preseason award watch lists. And there are just about as many defensive standouts as offensive. Even the kicker is on an award watch list.

The offense seems more powerful than the defense when you look at the individual players, but the Rams have hard hitters galore.

For all intents and purposes, Fordham is a legit D-IA/FBS team.

Even relatively competitive Columbia teams of the recent past would be prohibitive underdogs in week one, but this team actually needs to worry more about a repeat of the devastating injuries that resulted from this game last year.

So in other words, Columbia is WORSE, (no more Marcorus Garrett, D-line gutted), since that 52-7 defeat and Fordham is BETTER.

As much as I don’t expect Columbia to win any games this fall, I’d hate to see that fate sealed without a doubt before the first game is even over. That’s what happened essentially when Brett Nottingham and Seyi Adebayo went down at Fordham last year.

This is precisely what got me personally involved with CU FB last year; the Fordham game.

Losing is one thing. Watching physically overmatched destruction is something altogether different. It disgusted and scared me.

Best wishes/hopes for the team.

After last year's Fordham game, and based upon a discussion with a Fordham trustee about how the Fordham board was urged by the new President to make a major push in football, I wrote to Dianne and told her to cancel the series right then and there. Let's be blunt: Fordham doesn't even pretend to admit players who can meet watered down Pagriot League admissions criteria. In short, they can and will admit anybody they want without worrying about Ivy type bands of admitted players. When Rutgers went big time in the mid 70s and blew up our season in Giants Stadium, both Columbia and Princeton immediately cancelled all future Rutgers games. So rather than let a bunch of thugs manhandle our guys and wreck the season before it begins, why not issue an announcement that based upon what we perceive as a commitment to big time football with academically challenged players we,are canceling this year's Fordham game and all future games.

Exactly, you have to be smart about your competition. Though Columbia has beaten Fordham in the not too distant past, things have radically changed. Time to get Georgetown or Davidson or someone reasonable to replace them. I think even scheduling Wagner again would be a mistake.

The other fear factor is that the Sept 20 game is their FOURTH GAME OF THE SEASON, and our first ?!!
Duh, advantage Fordham !!

When did we ever play Wagner in football? I don't recall this. Yes, in basketball fairly regularly. (They're usually kind of overly physical and graceless, even dirty a lot of the time and apparently encouraged to be that by their coach, but we also usally beat them.) But football?

It was, however, somewhat unfortunate to term Fordham's players as "thuggish" and "academically challenged: without some actual evidence. I'd also hate to lose the Liberty Cup game, which stands for something. And if Fordham is THAT much bigger and better, then they should be skedding opponenhts other than Lafayette and Lehigh.

Yes, tooo, Columbia could feasibly play schools like Davidson, Elon and Presbyterian. Some such are already frequent basketball opponents.

I thought they played Wagner opening game prior to 9-11, then they switched to Fordham. I see now I am mistaken on that. I don't know why I thought they had Wagner on the schedule. They are not showing up on the all-time opponents list.

oldlion, did you know that 22 fordham players made the PL academic honor roll? not sure what 'thug' means at columbia, but in the rest of the world it's not synonymous with collegiate academic honorees.

"wien" stadium. how apropos.

Oldlion, your post is insulting and just plain wrong. Fordham does not have a new president. Fr. McShane has been in office since 2003. Calling the Fordham players "thugs" who cannot even meet watered down admission standards says more about you than it does about them. Those are code words, and we all understand exactly what you are saying. I, for one, hope Columbia does drop us from the schedule. Your fans and especially your pep band will not be missed.
