Petering Out in P-Town

Princeton 21 Columbia 10

Why Princeton Won

The Tigers avoided the big mistakes, mostly controlled the line of scrimmage and still had enough offensive firepower in the 2nd half to overcome a sluggish first two quarters.

Why Columbia Lost

Once again, the Lion offense couldn't get much consistency mostly due to a lack of adequate blocking. The defense provided a number of opportunities the offense didn't completely cash in on.

Key Turning Points

-With Columbia leading 10-7 at the half, the Lions got the ball first to start the 3rd quarter and promptly went backwards seven yards before punting the ball back to Princeton. The Tigers then went on a 61-yard, 11-play drive for a TD that permanently gave control of the game back to Princeton.

-With about 11 minutes left in the game and Princeton still up 14-10, Lion junior DB Ben Mathiasmeier brilliantly stepped in front of a swing pass by Tiger QB Kevin Davidson but he was unable to hold to the ball negating what looked like a certain pick-six. Princeton recovered from that play and went on to score the game-icing TD on that possession.

Columbia Positives

-The Lion defense played the best game against Princeton since Dartmouth almost beat the Tigers last year. There wasn't enough consistent pressure on Davidson, but Columbia kept a 50-plus points per game offense in check most of the game.

-QB Josh Bean had a much more efficient day passing, especially in the first half when he went 13-14 through the air.

-WR Ronald Smith had a brilliant game, getting consistently open and often fighting hard for yards after the catch.

Columbia Negatives

-The running game is still operating without sufficient blocking to be effective. It was better overall than the loss in week 2 vs. Georgetown, but the Lions still only had 40 net yards rushing. Even if you take away the 34 rushing yards lost from four sacks allowed, that's still only 74 yards rushing.

-The defense was strong overall, but two of the three Princeton TD's were the result of busted or poor tackling plays.

Columbia MVP

-Ronald Smith's stellar day almost was enough to give the Lions a win.

My son Tim pointed out that we really do miss Anders Hill at QB.. Have we under appreciated him? How about Coach Santos? Good job by the D...Offense? Hmmm.. Down 11 with about 8 minutes left and we get the ball in a new series.. Fabish Special? First play.. run ( Little gain), second play... run.... (Little gain)… CLOCK? Killed nearly a full minute! Followed by The Fabish 6 Yard Special Pass.. Also don't like the continuous whining by Coach Bags.. not endearing with the officials who very rarely give us the close ones.. Thoughts? If we keep playing Bean, we'll probably beat Brown, but that will be all.

Anders Hill was A LOT better than many people gave him credit for. He toughed it out on some mediocre teams and as soon as he was surrounded by some other play makers he had a number of really terrific games. Having a real good QB Coach like Santos is huge. These kids are talented coming out of HS but they need a lot of "care and feeding" to transition to college football. Think about it, Dartmouth has the luxury of two excellent QB coaches, Kevin Daft and a guy named.......Teevens.

Quarterbacks will have a harder time developing without a solid dependable Offensive Line. The question is: can this line develop and and improve as the season goes on? Defense played well enough to win. We have
more than enough talent at the skill positions but with no holes and an
inconsistent ability to throw downfield (past the yard markers)we are mediocre at best. Coach B is a master at playing officials - he used to do it all the time when he coached Penn and got calls against us, he is respected in this league and knows what he is doing.

Anders Hill should be playing in the NFL.

Tod...rewatch the Princeton game. Take a stopwatch and determine the average time before the D is on top of the quarterback. For Columbia, the time was about 2 seconds. For Princeton, several seconds...and more.. The problem is the O line. We can’t open holes for the run, and there’s no protection for downfield passes. As such, all we can do is quick, short dump passes. Bean did great with that plan. 80% completion rate. What do you expect from another QB?

DOC.... Not saying that coach Bags doesn't know what he is doing... Obviously he has had tremendous success throughout a brilliant career and here at CU...My question is why is he allowing the OC to be so mediocre... at best..????? The Hurry Up and Wait offense is awful when we are behind... I am remembering the down fields just two years ago..How about using a hurry up offense once in awhile? How about some trick plays? How about changing it up? Why do the real fans all agree about the failure to move the ball despite a plethora of talent? Robert Pelletreau

Robert...Absolutely agree that the play calling by the OC has been disappointing. Calling it mediocre is a compliment ! Is the reason for this because he does not have
faith in the blocking schemes necessary to carry it out? We have gotten SO predictable.
