Dartmouth 24 Columbia 21
Why Dartmouth Won
The Big Green defense stuffed the Lion offense for most of the game, while its running attack became dominant as Dartmouth pulled away in the 3rd quarter. The Big Green also forced three turnovers while not committing one of their own.
Why Columbia Lost
The Lions offense sputtered for most of the game, and only revived itself with the crucial help of an unusual string of Dartmouth personal foul penalties. The Columbia running game was ineffective and pass protection was not strong enough to stave off four Big Green sacks and an injury to starting QB Chase Goodwin.
Key Turning Points
-After forcing a three-and-out on Dartmouth's opening possession, the Lions marched quickly to the Big Green 17 before a holding penalty defused the drive. Then a 41-yard field goal attempt by Hugo Merry went wide, and Columbia's best chance to lead at any point in the game was lost.
-With the game still scoreless, the Lions faced a 4th and 1 at the 50 on the first play of the second quarter. Columbia opted to go for it, but committed a false start penalty and then was forced to punt.
-With 13 minutes left in the half, an accurate pass from Goodwin to CU WR Bryson Canty went through Canty's hands an into the arms of Dartmouth's Zach Farris who returned it 28 yards to the Lion 20. Three plays later, Big Green PK Owen Zalc banged a FG from 35 yards out for a 3-0 Dartmouth lead they would never give up.
-After the Lions went three-and-out on their ensuing possession, the Big Green took over at their 19 and embarked on what would be their most impressive drive of the game. It ended with a very nice handoff fake/pull back by Dartmouth QB Grayson Saunier who threw a 10-yard TD pass to Chris Corbo for a 10-0 lead.
Columbia Positives
-The Lions showed they had some fight in them with their furious 4th quarter comeback bid, but it was very much aided by six, yes SIX Dartmouth personal foul penalties on their defense.
Columbia Negatives
-The Lions went off script by committing turnovers for the first time since week 2, committing deadly penalties at key moments, and showing poor tackling skills on multiple running plays.
Columbia MVP
-While he was not perfect, backup QB Cole Freeman bravely took the leadership role after Goodwin left the game and bore the brunt of hit after hit and a number of dropped passes. His ability to keep fighting at least lifted the Lion spirits down the stretch of the game.

I commented earlier, love Poppe and Smith but why did they run Freeman so much AFTER Goodwin injury? If he goes down? Get Sanchez up and ready as the back up. Status of Goodwin? Agree with Jake that Freeman played well . TV commentator spot on about Freeman having " Happy feet". Should work on his staying calm and not rushing things. Will get that with more game experience, something Goodwin does so well.
Next week is pivotal all around. Dartmouth has won their three Ivy League games by a total of seven points. Can Harvard beat them in Hanover? And similarly, can the Lions get by Yale? One loss may well be what it takes to get a share of the title. The Lions need to rebound and win next week. With that momentum they can win out. If at the end of the season, even if Dartmouth goes undefeated, at 6-1, there should be nothing but elation among us.
Someone call NYPD and please put out an ABP on the Lions O-Line and D-Line! That was simply embarrassing! As far as our O-Line - have some pride for goodness sakes. The O-Line for Dartmouth is good, but the coaches need to create a scheme that adjust for the shortcomings on our D-Line.
As always, the RBs ran hard. However, without holes, they couldn't go anywhere.
I believe the secondary did a very good job since the Dart QB had all day to throw. Yes, there could have been some INTs and they need to be more aggressive on the run. however, with very limited pressure on the Dart QB, they played well, al things considered.
My MVP was Jack Smiechowski. This kid was all over the place and he put a world of hurt on their RBs and WRs in the slot. Maybe put Jack on the D-line? I'm kidding, but we need jis tenacity on the D-line.
Too many dropped balls by our WRs. No excuses, it's that simple. We need to use our TEs more and follow the progression because they are OPEN!
I think Goodwin played well. He can't catch and throw... Cole Freeman did a nice job filling in (for his abilities). He needs to be more patient, like Goodwin, so that he lets the play develop. Cole did a fantastic "juke" of their LBs; bravo!
We have a well above average kicker, but we needed that FG early in the game. Punting was amazing!
Teaching moment for the coaches. They need to learn how to pivot when their game plan is not working. Nobody questions Poppe's (or the staff's) passion, but the training wheels are off and they let too many opportunities fall through the cracks. What could he do? Offensively, I would have put in more "pop" passed to the TEs and WR crossing 5-10 yards off the ball. We don't need home runs on every play. The play calling was very predictable. As far as the defense - if you are getting manhandled that badly on the interior line, just blitz and send the house so you put some (any) pressure on the QB.

They were trying to win the game.
Sunday morning QB.
Or... common sense if you took the time to watch the Dart-Fordham, Dart-Yale or Dart-Penn games like I did.
And it doesn't take a rocket scientist to pivot (or be prepared to do so). Now, if you are saying we don't have the personal to do so, fine, but Dart was beatable.
Unfortunately, I think this season will forever be riddled with what ifs. Dartmouth is always a well coached disciplined program that requires a perfect game and game plan to win. Poppe and the rest of the crew need to take notes on how Fabish was able to pick apart the Dartmouth team and go on long sustained drives. The big play stuff just doesn’t work against a disciplined program like this and a seasoned offensive mind like Fabish understood that; take the 2022 performance 19-0 for example. I think Poppe has a lot of potential if he can continue to bring in the same caliber of talent he inherited from Fabish and take notes on how to adjust his scheme for a disciplined program like this. However, I will always be left with the question of what if Fabish had had the chance to captain this ship of very talented young men I really think he would have won this game a potentially the Ivy.
Why not come clean? Instead of hiding being the moniker “Anonymous”, tell everybody you are truly Mark Fabish. Enough already! No one wants to hear how great you were/are. You had your` chance to coach the Lions, and failed miserably. . Go sulk on your own blog.
The D OL made holes for the RBs. Our inability to stop the run was fatal.
Hey, Coach Fabish, if you had been able to “pick apart” Princeton, or even Brown last year, you might have been on the sideline at Baker Field yesterday instead of losing to Pennington 41-8 as the esteemed head coach of Peddie Prep.
Fabish 3-7, Eldo 35-35, Poppe 4-2 So far....
You're not a football analyst. You're a latex salesman.
Dartmouth was more fundamentally sound. Not disciplined, but block, tackled, catch, and especially run fit better.
We can make a run, but there are two things I'm concerned with.
First, we may be reading/believing the hype and press clippings just a little too much. We haven't "arrived", and need to have the under dog mentality. Be confident but let's stop anointing ourselves before the season ends. Best this, all time that.. is not a smart approach. I'd like to see everyone work on grounding the propaganda and refocussing these guys on process.
Truth is neither Lafayette nor Penn are as good as we made them out to be. We played sloppy at Wagner after 15 minutes, and even w the qb wr situation should have won at Georgetown. And yesterday it didn't seem enough guys were mentally ready. Let's go back to we have something to prove.
Secondly, injuries. Depth is becoming a concern.
Not all the previous starters were out there on secondary D - why change that yesterday
Let me add that there was no picking apart yesterday. You all already know that the blustery wins affected, not only the kicking games, but the passing, and yes, dropped passes by us. Not a good day for longer downfield passes. So “picking apart” as some clown posted up above was not, a reality.
Hey, you guys. Some of us have been following Columbia football for many years. It has been a very decent season thus far. I don’t think very many of us feel that the program has “arrived” nor are we overly confident. There is not too much “hype”. The media reports in the articles and spectator are great and logical. But we have some real challenges ahead both next week against Yale and then Harvard. And we can pick at the performances of every game. I am sure followers of our Ivy League competition have lots of picking and moaning to do every week. So I am kind of seeing a 4-3 record within the league for us right now. I love where we are and I’d like my prediction to be wrong, but I think that’s just being realistic, given all the circumstances, including injuries.
Too many dropped passes on offense. Turnovers. Poor tackling technique. Failure to seal the edge. And missing too many starters.
Best 11 not out there tackling + played a 3 -4 on D
What does that mean? “Best 11 not out there”?
To clarify, the media is doing a fine job. The articles are excellent. The kids deserve recognition and praise. My point is I feel the program we should focus beyond those, not allow those to cloud our mind and keep from feeling as if we're where we need to be. Thus, having arrived. I'm all for heaping praise on performance. I'm also all for not allowing that to seep into our process. Which may have occurred. Our best players made key mistakes. Could we be doing better with the psychological approach? Perhaps. Again, media is doing great and what they should. From our end we need to keep that all in perspective, get the kids to stay focused and not buy into media praise being more than what it is. Hope that clarifies things.
Let's not question Sto's choice of scheme. Guy knows what he's doing. Execution is another story.
Parents are maybe more important to keeping their son grounded than the coaches are. Loved Coach Mac's twitter post after Lafayette, "So what. Now what?"
Maybe start hammering that home will help.
Clap, clap, clap, clap
We had no issues with wind on throws under 20 yards. Each kid sliced the wind short. The 3 INTS were bad decisions twice and a dropped catch once. We threw the ball 1 time beyond 25 yds, I think. And it was not a good ball, with wind at our back. Almost had a 4th INT because wr wasn't expecting ball.
my Takeaways, Offense was struggling, wind hurt us and that was definitely a winnable game. When WR or RB are out there, they need to establish a rhythm, regardless of who the QB is and they normally do that but this game, the game plan was different. Also hope Rocco M is ok he is a vital
part of our defense. Looks like #4 will be the QB for Yale. Temp shows 40 degrees and dark. Let's learn and move forward.
Not making fun. Or being critical. Just had to chuckle w the "dark"....for a 7pm game.
Looking forward.
How do folks feel we will defend rpo game of Yale? Man, zone, mix??
Nenad's skill set and size may present a match-up issue with our shorter corners and safties if we are man and commit an additional hat to box. Not to mention they have 3 solid wrs.
If we go zone, can our box hold up with 5 or 6? If we can handle the
That is one key to the game.
Another key is if we can establish the run. Looking purely at statistics, Yale only allowing 51% completion rate but a ton of yards per catch. Allowing 4.5 yds per rush is a big number. Yale next to last in Ivy vs Rush. Seems the run game has to show up. Freeman may be a good option this week anyway with a +1 run game, maybe force them into 1v1 outside and take advantage of that large yds/catch Bulldog D allows. The glance he hit Canty on was a nice ball and available because of the qb run threat.
We have to use Freeman as a runner to open pass game. We can't have him throw 30 times like Georgetown.
I think we are all on edge including the boys because Cole plays his heart out but also somewhat wreck-less and takes chances to get hurt. In Poppe's post game interview he mentioned that he and coaches may have put too much pressure and hyped the game up which impacted the 1st half. Run game may not work this week for Yale based on their performance 2 days ago.
They had 2 men on Canty whole
game. If we didn't miss that field goal
we at least could have went to OT but we also had several bad/missed passed and interceptions. I think it was a wake up call and if the backup QB has protection and does not panic, we may be ok.
ha! Yea it is just will be a little different than what they practice in. Let's hope there is not a wind chill Friday. We cannot be embarrassed on Prime Time TV.
This has been an aggressive attacking defense with the previous best 11 guys. There were Personel changes yesterday. The defense has been playing lights out until they switched it up
I watched the game. Penn lost 2 qbs, and Yale loaded up on the run. No respect for pass game after they lost the starter. Yale run defense isn't good. It was a function of Penn losing any ability to pass.
We have to use Cole's entire skill set. If he goes down, he goes down. Just have to live with completing 50-55%.
We should Never settle. Why did we not try the Simpkin QB?
well that is true, makes sense
right! If it's not broke, don't fix it (defense) leave the personnel alone
Is Simpkins the next guy up?
Way off topic here, but I've heard of the success thru well being program does that include a mental performance coach? Listened to post game presser. If we made any mistakes in mental prep, is this an area that program can help? Or am I thinking of something that would come from somewhere outside of that program?
Mental training is a huge deal at FBS level. Maybe this is an area we can look to add to football here.
I find it interesting that so many here who, rightly in my opinion, praise the coaching staff in the next breath question personnel decisions. Perhaps the most basic job of a coach is to determine which players provide the best chance to win.
Meanwhile...you just did that
Sounds like #15’s family with a post here. Come on man…
15 was solid - all day. Has been dependable all season. One of the few guys who can play in box and space. I'm good w him getting an mvp shout out.
Huh?
I think we're gonna get smoked Friday nite by Yale.
If the Jets couldn't beat NE, I don't see us beating Yale.
2 days ago, Goodwin was the best QB in the league, now you want to throw the unknown 3rd string guy in.
The hope is Goodwin is healthy. Have to trust the backup is really our 2nd best option. But backup's decision making has been questionable. He has 4 int on 69 att, runs when he doesn't have to and isn't seeing open guys. Plays HARD, just don't think he sees it all unfolding on enough snaps.
Goodwin is OUT due to knee
Okay everyone. Take a deep breath!!! This is year one of the start of a new program. Even this blog overall has less gloom and doom than during the previous few years. We will continue to be headed in the right direction if we improve recruiting and not lose key players to the transfer portal. Since we still have several personnel gaps that need filling, we may even attract some transfers. It is like baby pigeons. Everyone knows that they must exist, but no one has ever seen them.
Fully expect a big blitz package from Coach Rice and company.
Coach was pretty blunt in his letter—D’s strength is in the OL, RB and DL. We made some bad plays and some personnel changes are going to be made. A few missed assignments on defense and some bad decisions on offense, plus some sloppy play. He is a very good coach and does not play favorites—he will make changes in personnel.
we shall just have to see about that.
where do you think changes are needed?
wonder if Millia #7 on D is out? any word? he left on the cart
that almost 4th was actually a TE. Clearly he didnt even know his route which should NEVER happen. He never even turned around
Hey we are already in a better position than last year. Now the rest of
the season we will have to WORK and fight for it especially with our QB is done for. With him we would be set.
I saw Robert Kraft leaving during 3rd quarter. I wonder what his thoughts were?
Ok dad. Thanks
Probably wondering about local rub & tug options
lol
I think one year is enough to began to judge a coach. Fabish was judged after just half a season as a head coach.
I just can't believe any D1 coach is telling anyone outside of the staff, players and AD that personnel changes are being made. TMI for people who are not on the team. Wow
You trying to make me like this blog again?
So I just watched Poppe's post game press interview and he did say that.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-xcsEopOgw
Can someone list those options? (for next Homecoming! :)
Mark Fabish was but one of a long litany of coordinators, who failed as a head coach. (Something Jets and Giants fan understand well.) While that was clear early in his tenure as the “Interim Head Coach”, he did nothing to exhibit any proficiency as the season progressed. (Have you forgotten the Brown game.) If you are Mark Fabish masquerading as “Anonymous”, my sympathies, for your inability to recognize reality. (Sort of like Glenn Close’s character in “Fatal Attractions”.) if you are merely a fan, why not start your own blog and spare us your delusions.
Guys, this is a family blog, with women on here. We are fans of an Ivy League institution, let’s act with some class
Yes, this blog is all class.
Here are my power ratings. These reflect what I believe is the true strength of each team and isn’t necessarily aligned with their current IL win-loss records.
1. Dartmouth - hard to argue with this one
2. Harvard - coming on strong, but can they win in Hanover?
3. Yale - the game on Friday night will tell us a lot.
4. Columbia - a nice near-comeback in Q4 on Saturday against the top team, but some line issues on both sides of the ball and a QB injury put this team in a tough spot.
5. Brown - a Princeton loss away from being 3-0 in conference, but then again, the win against Cornell wasn’t super impressive.
6. Princeton - a down year for sure, but this team should beat the teams in the cellar.
7. Cornell — finding new ways to lose each week, but at least they beat Yale. I think this team may have one more trick up its sleeve.
8. Penn - This team is in freefall, and the injury to Sayin’ doesn’t help.
I actually think we play our best game. But I wouldn’t be shocked if you’re right. I don’t see a so-so effort and performance from us: either we play lights out or we get rocked. Hope it’s the former. I also think Yale is due for a bad game, and no one will be giving us a chance. Should be good motivation for us, but we’ll see. Just my gut feeling here, so take it with a grain of salt.
We play better when navy blue is our primary uniform color.
I was finally having some fun. I guess I should go back to the giving homage to the trans community mode.
Should've gone to Yale. We're light blue! I would rather lose in our own colors than win in Navy!
Actually one of the main political issues for progressive feminists at the fore of the women's movement is giving a voice to women who work in massage parlors. Let's not be chauvinistic and fail to recognize and celebrate this vulnerable community. Jake should actually include these establishments in his annual guide to Inwood when attending Lions home games (i think Jake skipped this year).
We play better when light blue is the secondary color. Check the record since we introduced navy as the primary color, doofus.
Sorry to disappoint, alum from the mid 90s.
He may have been referring to our Obsidian uniforms; those are nice. Unfortunately, our uniforms did not lose the game, our sluggish lines (both sides of the ball), proved ineffective.
4 wins with Navy featured over Lt Blue. 2 loses with Lt Blue featured over Navy.
Talking about massage parlors and using terms like zip it and doofus really helps our team when when possible recruits and their parents read this blog.
As it happens, we also have a better record on days I feed my fish. Correlation is not causality. But just in case, I’ll make sure they have plenty to eat on Friday.
OK for coach to say he is going to make some changes, since he did not identify any such players by name. On defense there were some blown plays in which guys did not put themselves in the right position to make the stop, or in which poor tackling led to outsized gains. So he is not embarrassing anybody by name, but he is making it clear that if you cannot or do not do your job it’s the next man up. On offense there were some blown blocking assignments as well. We had some drops, but the WR who doesn’t have occasional drops has not yet been born.
Well put. I totally agree.
Thanks for doing Beginning of the week, power ratings. What a pity some of the other people posting here did not pick up on that and comment instead of going to the gutter. Anyway, I pretty much agree with what you posted here and certainly it will be quite dynamic throughout the rest of the season.. I think Harvard will beat Dartmouth. I also think you’re right on with Cornell having another trick, although I don’t think I would have put Penn in the seller yet. But they are winless and with that key injury that you pointed out. Very nice job. I know we will be competitive, but I think we will have our hands full on Friday night.
A couple of decades of mercilessly ripping coaches from Shoop to Mangurian to Fabish and everyone in between may have slightly more adverse impact on potential recruits.
Or perhaps even more impactful are the coaches themselves. Just my opinion here, but I would think the likes of the Mangurian candidate wouldn’t exactly have recruits chomping at the bit to play for him.
He's not on this blog. If you think he is, you're delusional
Fat Joe was terrible.
This is our home folks, treat it as such. As for the scumbag comments, keep them to yourself.
Bravo, this Blog has been reduced to the gutter with these offensive Bob Kraft remarks. No, I'm not defending Mr. Kraft's actions, rather pointing out how crass this blog has become. Quite frankly, comments like this are beneath us (or most of us). I'm not sure why those posts haven't been deleted?
Love the Fish Feeder comment!
The irony of people here complaining about all of the protests and antics by students on campus is rich, when "adults" on this site can't seem to discuss things in a mature, intelligent fashion denigrating every discussion with insults, hyperbole, and comments with misinformation. Maybe, just maybe, the "adults" aren't setting a good enough example for the youth to follow.
Agree. We always get what we deserve. Don’t always deserve what we get.
More interested in football than in non-football matters. Major topics are status of Goodwin, who will play LT, why did our run defense break down, any first years about to see the field more, etc.
Totally agree that the navy blue should be our primary color with traditional light blue and white trim. We look and play stronger that way.
Come on, guys. Let’s get back on track. Enough about the uniforms already. What adjustments will we make on D against Yale? How do we win the turnover battle? Is Freeman our QB the rest of the way?
Yes, let’s try to focus on football here and now. I also think it’s only one or two clowns that are mucking up this blog. Maybe two or three! And yes, we believe in free speech, but this is a Columbia lion and Ivy League football blog. All the garbage should be deleted that is not relevant.
Feed your fish EXTRA on Fridy!
The electric blue acaras will feast!
Well stated
Same with the political nonsense. Football only.
Attendance of 12,642 was perhaps not as large as hoped given the team's record and the matchup and the weather, but still respectable in a down year for Columbia alumni relations.
Of course the crowd was quiet - there was no score in the first half and as Dartmouth built a huge lead the old feelings crept in. Not having a large pep band anymore didn't help either. (There is a band again, but they are like 10 people and have their horns pointed at the field so no one can hear them).
Attacks on the student section are unwarranted -- the ENTIRE crowd was quiet -- and any political nonsense thrown into these comments simply means the author can be safely ignored.
Right on, Tiger! On all fronts. And the former cleverest band in the world could use some beefing up, more brass, more drums, more bass! Let's have Admissions open up some slots for those guys and gals.
Members of the so-called cleverest band in the world are legends in their own mind.
I must agreed, the QB was very predictable because all his were 10 yards or less. We have to go downfield more. We only went once.
