Columbia Game Notes

Penn Game Notes

Leading Story Lines

-This is pretty much a must-win for Penn if it seriously wants to contend for the Ivy title. After the Quakers lost to Dartmouth in week 3, they cannot afford to lose another league game.

-Is Columbia for real? The Lions looked impressive in their only Ivy game so far; beating Princeton by three scores. But Penn is tougher and this game is on the road.

-Columbia has not beaten Penn at Franklin Field since an OT thriller in 1996. That's 12 straight losses, and most of them were not close.

3 Lions to Watch

-Columbia will need to find a way to put some pressure on Penn QB Aydin Sayin, and that means one of the replacement players for CU's injured DL starters will have to step up. Look for DE Ayden Baker #14 to make a difference in a positive or negative way in this role.

-WR Bryson Canty #2 has basically been held mostly on the sidelines for the last two games. If he's healthy the Lions will need to utilize him liberally.

-CB Carter McFadden will again have the bullseye on his back as the Quakers will likely target several passes at him. McFadden has stepped up well the last two weeks, and will have to do so again.

3 Quakers to Watch

-WR Jared Richardson #17 is a legit NFL prospect and has been the key difference maker for this program.

-LB John Lista #44 will play a primary role in trying to stop Columbia's prolific running attack.

-RB Malachi Hosley #1 is the Ivy League's leading rusher with 535 yards on the ground so far.

Driving and parking directions from NYC area please

Is train better option—how close to FF is the station?

Anonymous said...

Why not replace McFadden at the corner and ease him in as a fresh face later in the game? He is the best option at the corner?

Train to 30th Street station is a good option. 20 minute walk to FF. What the cost is I don''t know. If you drive, Ben Franklin bridge to Vine Street Express Way. After 3 or so mile on it( Crowded but moves fast. Follow the 476 signs to Airport NOT to Valley Forge. Proceed a few exits to South Street ( Left lane exit) Go tup to the light and turn right. Go to NEXT light and turn left. 100 feet or so turn into HOSPITAL PARKING ( At the light). No cash. Stadium is back on the other side of South. ASK for final but plenty will be going.

334 yards passing and 2-0 in the turnover battle equals a historic win. Homecoming 2024 for the Ivy League lead ! Bravo Lions !!

Great win for the lions! Always a good day win the lions come out with a victory however before everyone jumps on the Poppe bandwagon I think it is important to note who are the players that are leading this team. Chase Goodwin recruited by Fabish Bryson recruited by Fabish Joey Goergi recruited by Fabish. Rome was not built in a day and I think it is time we recognize that while it is great to see Poppe having success he is standing on the shoulders of giants mainly Bagnoli and Fabish.

I knew it! I should have posted sooner! I would have warned that there would be people who would invoke the “greatness” of the Bagnoli/Fabish regime. Once again now, “the Princeton tight end trapped the ball”, “the weather was terrible for so many of the games”, ‘the officials”, “with only a little bit of luck Fabish would have been 5-5”. How about being a gentleman and offering the players and coaches the accolades they are due.

Fabish is a giant?? 😂😂 Sit down fella, you’ve lost your marbles!!
ROAR LION ROAR! Great win. Onward!!!

Wow. Homecoming is going to be lit. I'll start cleaning up the neighborhood to be ready!

To be fair, Bagnoli/Fabish recruited these players. Poppe and his staff have them playing with verve and imagination, at a consistent, winning level. I see a distinct difference in play calling and execution.

Agreed

The Lions are ready to Roar and go on their run to an Ivy Championship.

It is fantastic to see the lions winning on the field, however I would have to agree that the current success of the Poppe era is resting on a foundation established by Fabish. I have been following Columbia football since my undergrad days (CC ‘73) and not one staff has been able to match the caliber that Bagnoli and Fabish have brought to the program. Hopefully Poppe will be able to continue their legacy but only time will tell. As far as I’m concerned, this team is what Fabish built. Roar lions roar!

What a great win for the Lions! That one-handed catch by Canty was incredible. When he and Chase are clicking, they will be hard to beat! Homecoming should be amazing and hopefully we can pull it off!!

Plenty of players left at Michigan and Alabama that were recruited by the prior coaching staffs. How are the new coaches working out? Can we stop hearing about Fabish/Bagnoli. They had their chances.

Fabish is a giant??? What a joke.

We would not be in this position we're it not for the efforts and turnaround of Bagnoli/Fabish. Don't be an ingrate. It's important to recognize thier contributions in our moment of success.

Glad I went to the game; Goodwin is excellent and Canty is the best receiver I have seen in a lifetime of watching our beloved Lions. Several coaching calls were head scratching, like not taking the easy FG and missing on 4th and 2 twice, and the ill advised onsides kick. But let’s face it—we have a team which really can make a run for it.

Defense bottled up the Penn run game, and the Penn QB was so-so.

Great all-around game by the Lions. Our offense and defense were both outstanding. Chase Goodwin is a terrific quarterback and our wide receivers are excellent. I just watched the Michigan-Illinois game on national TV and the fact is that Goodwin is better than both of the Big Ten quarterbacks. Of course Bryson Canty is a much better wide receiver then anyone I saw today playing for Michigan or Illinois.

Dartmouth barely got by Central Connecticut State today. The Big Green were a but lucky to score a a late fourth quarter touchdown to win the game. Althought Dartmouth is undefeated, Columbia is a better all around team than Dartmouth and should be favored next weekend.

Poppe is the reason we won today. Not Bagnoli, and certainly not Fabish. Do you want to give out finder’s fees to Bags and Not-so-Fabulous for finding these guys? While we’re at it, should we also thank Manchurian for being so dang awful? Without him, we probably wouldn’t have hired Bagnoli. Who’s next? Should we thank Poppe’s pop warner coach? Bags was good for the program, but let’s move on from the hagiography. Fabish was putrid as a head coach. Did they recruit a lot of these guys? Yes. So thank you. But no thanks for the awful coaching last year from Fabish. Did Goodwin even see the field a year ago? I have no doubt Fabish would be 0-4 with this team. And Poppe’d only just getting started. Lotta gutsy play calling on offense from Mr. Smith today, and we still haven’t played our A+ game.

I'm old enough to remember George Starke, who was one of the greatest athletes in Columbia history. He played tight end at Columbia before becoming one of the Washington Redskins immortal "Hogs." I though of George today when our 6'6" 250 tight end ,Braden Daugherty, made that amazing run and catch. Starke was a great two-sport athlete at Columbia--football and basketball, but I don't remember him being as fast and agile as Daugherty appeared today.

Great win by the Lions! I agree with much of what has been said above about Fabish and Bags recruiting successes. Indeed, these are recruits/players that Fabish and Bags brought in. Yet, what does that tell you? Fabish may have been a good recruiter and a kind man, but that’s not all you need to win football games. Our scheme was our dated and had No way of utilizing the talent they brought in. Fabish was not a leader to the extent that he could rally a team to win close games. Poppe has brought in a coaching staff that brings common sense schematically, and a spark that has revamped the morale of this program — something that Fab couldn’t do.

Ok, let’s rein it in just a bit. I’d give us an A- today and Penn a C+/B-. Can’t wait to see an A or A+ game from us. Canty very talented, but I’m not sure about the best ever at Columbia. In terms of recent receivers, what about Wainwright? Ronald Smith? And TE Wade Fletcher a little further back? Hope Canty can stay healthy…

We are much deeper than Dartmouth at running back with seniors Joey Giorgi, Malcolm Terry and sophomore Griffin Johnson.

Fabish continuing as head coach would have meant plenty more wins for the Quake Show.

I don’t think we’ll be favored next Saturday. I predict the line will open somewhere between a pick-‘em and Dartmouth -2. For what it’s worth, my opening line prediction for the Penn game was right on target when some clown was trying to say that Penn would be laying seven. If I had to guess, I’d say Dartmouth -1.5 or -2 to start, but it’ll be bet down to around a pick-‘em.

McFadden played better today, but the original poster is right: every team targets him. Thank goodness Sayin was accurate on very few passes that went more than 10-15 years. Not a good day for Sayin. We’ll see about Saunier, but we’ve gotta prepare for more bombs, especially against D, Y, and H.

Anonymous said...

Question for lion faithful: is this team better than the 2017 team? I think offensively yes, more consistent drives and running game. Defensively no especially pass defense. Overall yes?

Anonymous said...

If Nick Saban struggled his first year at Bama. If you can’t admit that Fabish and Bagnoli have a significant part in the success of this team you are being so disingenuous and disrespectful it’s scary. I can’t agree more with the quote Rome was not built in a day and we need to recognize those contributions made by Fabish.

Anonymous said...

Should we give Fabish a co-Ivy coach of the year award?

Dartmouth will be very tough to run on and their dline puts a lot of pressure on qb’s. I think all 3 phases have 1 more notch up in terms of level of play and eliminating unforced errors

I believe Poppe’s risks communicate to team that he is here to win, not try to avoid losing. Both offense and defense put together clutch 4th quarters to win a game when momentum seemed to be Penn’s

Lets go Lions. Biggest test so far with Dartmouth!

While you may be right, it is somewhat ivory tower thinking to hope that new administrations credit past ones properly. It’s like the economy and Presidents…much is inherited, good or bad.

Just focus on what current coaches and players are doing…and stop whining and instead celebrating being 4-1 and 2-0 mid way through season.

Perhaps you’re a parent of a back up or perhaps you’re an armchair coach who thinks this is the NFL. Either way it’s noisome.

Calling people doofuses — both classy and insightful! Thanks so much for that meaningful contribution. Really perceptive!

Anonymous said...

Erm, you might want to look up the meaning of “noisome.”

Anonymous said...

Preach on, my man! The fact that we’re 4-1 and 2-0 should be our focus.

Anonymous said...

Good analysis. Agree on all points, especially about finding still another (higher) gear. Dartmouth to be our toughest test yet, but it doesn’t get easier after that. But very happy we’re in this position, and love that we have exciting and meaningful challenges ahead!

The “Stockholm Syndrome” - the only plausible explanation for people mentioning Mark Fabish. Mark Fabish was able to hide behind Al Bagnoli. Once there was no shield he was exposed. He only knew one way, “the Bagnoli way” - bubble screen, play not to lose, rely on your defense. While that might have worked twenty years ago, the game evolved, leaving both the mentor and the pupil behind. If Fabish was the generational talent people want us to believe, he would be coaching somewhere else now, other than in the prep school ranks. ENOUGH! This is Coach Poppe’s time. Do not insult him or us, with the mention of Mark Fabish.

Best player on the ‘17 team was Cameron Roane or J Wainwright. Roane was a true shut down corner; they are few and far between. Canty stands out because he is tall enough to win 50/50 balls, so I give him the job as our best WR in many years. But nobody is perfect; he had one of three drops. As far as Goodwin, e had one bad throw which should have been picked but otherwise was excellent—sees the field and can and does extend plays instead of taking sacks.

No, this jagoff comment section is definitely not he place for classy and insightful

Zip it, moron.

Anders Hill needs to be in the conversation about best player on that team. He had a sensational year in 2017. And as good as Wainwright was, the guy who got him the ball was just as good, including the super-clutch strike to take down Penn in OT.

Anonymous said...

People forget how phenomenal Hill was. And he threw an incredible deep ball. Goodwin has the chance to be even better, but he’s still a sophomore and obviously isn’t there yet. But given time, I think he could be, especially if he works on his deep ball.
