Your new Lion: Jake Wanamaker
Just when I thought the reports of a quality transfer were not true, a little detective work uncovers an exciting fact.
I can now confirm that University of Texas at San Antonio WR Jake Wanamaker is coming to Columbia.
Again, I want to make it clear that this news is NOT the result of any info obtained from any sources inside the Columbia football program, (so no one should get in trouble!). Rather, I was able to piece together a couple of items of public record and yeah, even Facebook turned out to be a big help.
Anyway, here's a look at the 6-1, 190 pound Wanamaker's highlight reel from his days at Central Catholic HS in San Antonio:
At UTSA, which just started its football program last fall, Wanamaker led the team as a freshmen in TD receptions.
Wanamaker will be the second Central Catholic grad to come to Columbia football, joining his old classmate Carey Parker, who is also going to be a rising sophomore with the Lions.
This is truly a shot in the arm for Columbia's offense. BUT, it's not clear if Wanamaker will be able to play THIS season. UTSA is currently a FBS program, and transfers from one FBS school to another usually have to sit out a year. Stay tuned...

Chelsea's Appearance
For those of you who missed it, here's the video clip of Chelsea Janes on my Varney and Co. show yesterday. My star anchor, Stuart Varney was out yesterday, but Charles Payne, former LSU track star Sandra Smith, and tort lawyer king Mark Lanier did a great job interviewing her.
Quiet Period
Head Coach Pete Mangurian must be in the throws of some heavy early recruiting for the class of 2017, as his blog and Twitter feed have gone relatively silent in recent days.
These early visits to current high school juniors are probably the most important part of the entire recruiting process. First impressions matter. So let's hope we're winning the battles right from the get-go.
This being the first week in May, the official release with the name of all our incoming football frosh should be out in a couple of weeks tops. We don't know all of those names yet, so this is an exciting last period of waiting before we really get a handle on this recruiting class.
Tickets on Sale
I'm a little late on this one, but season tickets for the 2012 season have been on sale for about 10 days now.
The prices remain the same for the 5th or 6th straight year; $108 for each chairback seat and $54 for bleacher seats.
With six home games, I don't think I have to tell you how great a deal this is.

Best of luck to Wannamaker. But Penn and Dartmouth had WR transfers from BCS conferences last year, and neither has made an impact thus far.
Chelsea did a nice job- too bad it was Yale specific.
According to the UT at San Antonio website, Wanamaker played in 8 games last year and started 1 game .... he had 7 receptions and 2 TD's, tied for 2nd in TD receptions .....
Watching the highlight film was impressed with Wanamaker's ability to run routes even when pass protection broke down. He has deceptive speed and the ability to accelerate after the catch. Liked the way he competes for the ball in the air as well.
What's the reason for the ineligibility rule on transfers?

Lions scored 41 runs in winning 3 of 4 games with Penn as the season ended in some disappointment.
In 4 games with Cornell , we scored only 10 runs and they got only 11 runs. But, Cornell won 3 of the games (two wins were in the last inning by one run each time.)
It is what it is. But..
Assuming your information is correct, Jake Wanamaker will be a great addition to the Columbia Football Team as he is an excellent pass receiver. According to Rivals, Wanamaker committed to UTSA on 1/28/11 despite offers from Columbia, Dartmouth and Montana State. Rivals graded him as a two-star recruit with 4.52 speed. Apparently, Wanamaker was just one of many outstanding wide receivers on the UTSA roster which may explain why he only started one game. UTSA also had a 6'4" wide receiver transfer from UMiss on the roster. Our two incoming wide receivers from Texas (Bell and Wanamaker) are both lightning fast.
From what I just read on the Internet, Wanamaker sounds like he was the fastest receiver in a group of outstanding wide receivers at UTSA. Sounds like a great pick-up for the Lions.
