Rules are Rules

Wanamaker Eligibility

It seems almost certain that new Columbia transfer, WR Jake Wanamaker from UT San Antonio. will have to sit out the 2012 season because he is transferring from one FCS school to another. Hopefully, he will use this year to truly learn his new team, adapt to New York and be a super impact player in 2013.

Even though he won't be playing right away, Wanamaker will be the 15th Columbia player from Texas when he and the other newcomers get to camp on August 18th.

For those of you with a pro-Texas bias, that's a more than just encouraging number of players from the Lone Star State. And yes, 15 would be a historically high number for any Columbia roster in the past.

Attracting transfers like Wanamaker, who was a scholarship athlete at UTSA is something I consider to be an essential piece in Columbia's championship puzzle.

Adams' Proving Ground

There's no time to rest for Columbia's newly NFL-signed Jeff Adams. He has to report to the Dallas Cowboys rookie camp TOMORROW.

Jake,
Please give us your take on the apparent "epidemic" of ex-pro footballers who are killing themselves.

Columbia University, in general, and Columbia College and Columbia SEAS, in particular, has a very good reputation in the State of Texas. It is one of the best states for recruiting because of the Columbia name recognition, the strong high school academic and athletic programs, and Texans are just plain smart. FYI, there are also outstanding athletes from Texas on the Columbia women's swimming team, and the Columbia men's tennis teams, amongst others.

While CTE- chronic traumatic encephalopathy undoubtably plays a role in these suicides, other factors also involved. Past and current use of steroids, depression from no longer being in the limelight. financial woes, relationship problems, etc. Would be interesting if the NFL went back in time and did a study to see if suicides and dementia in ex-players were as prevalent in the past
