Buckeye Bonanza

As many readers have already noted, we have two more confirmed members of the 2013 recruiting class. Both are from the greater Cincinnati area.

First is 6-2 205 lbs. LB Keith Brady from Lakota East HS. He is indeed the younger brother of rising junior Lion LB John Brady, (who started to make a bit of an impact last year, getting into nine games and recording five tackles).  This would make the Brady brothers the only two documented Lakota grads to play for the Lions.

Next is 6-3 210 lbs. WR Cameron Dunn from the legendary St.Xavier HS, the same school where recent Lion greats Drew Quinn ‘09 and LouMiller ‘10 came from.  Dunn’s commitment means Columbia will not be without at least one St. X grad on the roster for the first time since 2004. Dunn would be the 9th documented St. X grad to play for the Lion football program.

Dunn is an intriguing pickup, spurning offers from AirForce, Navy and a preferred walk-on offer from Northwestern.

You can see his highlight video here:

Dunn didn’t put up huge numbers at St. X, but he has the size and skills to make an impact. Clearly, big programs saw a lot of potential in him, so I'm very excited about this commitment.

And one from Cali!

It's not all Buckeye news this weekend as we also add Crespi High School's Richard Wolff to the Lion's den. His commitment is according to one of his HS coaches. Wolff is a 6-3 254 lbs. OL who seems to have come back stronger than ever after a knee injury his junior year.

You can see Wolf's highlight video by clicking here.

Wolff would be just the second Crespi alum to play football for the Lions, but he joins pretty good company in Ray Gerena '97, (Crespi '93), who was a very good player on Columbia's 1996 8-2 team.

So let's update "the list":

1. Keith Brady, LB 6-2 205 lbs. Lakota East HS, Liberty Township, OH
2. Toure Douglas, WR 6-4 188 lbs. Vineland HS, Vineland, NJ
3. Cameron Dunn, WR 6-3 210 lbs. St. Xavier HS, Cincinnati, OH
4. Cameron Nizialek, K/P 6-3 195 lbs. Freedom HS, South Riding, VA
*5. Brett Nottingham, QB 6-4 212 lbs. Monte Vista HS, Danville, CA
6. Kendall Pace, OL 6-5 250 lbs. Bishop McNamara HS, Forestville, MD
7. Will Peoples, S 6-1 190 lbs. Buckingham, Browne & Nichols, Cambridge, MA
8. Richard Wolff, OL 6-3 254 lbs. Crespi HS Encino, CA

*=Transfer from Stanford University, junior status.

Two excellent pick-ups for the Lions. Dunn is a great fit for a Lion offense which lacked an outstanding deep threat once Gross was injured very early in the 2012 season. The receiving corps improved dramatically last season and led by Nelligan and Connors it finished up as one of the best in the Ivy League. Now with Dunn, Douglas and perhaps a few other outstanding newcomers it could be the #1 receiving corps in 2013.

I believe the recruiting of taller receivers, such as Gross and Nelligan before, along with the height of the incoming receivers, will make the passing attack a serious threat, especially in the red zone. The size advantage over the DBs will help, as was seen yesterday by tall receivers such as Julio Jones, Boldin, and all year by Calvin Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald and Andre Jones. Tall receivers with speed could be a significant advantage for the Lions.

... seems to me that Coach M has told the team to keep mum about recruiting info (hence the limited amount of info Jake posts)... as for the other Ivy "verbal commitments":

The New Haven Register lists 22 for Yale
http://portal31nhr.blogspot.com/

The Big Green Alert blog lists 16 for D'mouth
http://biggreenalertblog.blogspot.com/

and ....

ESPN recruiting blog list at least 9 for Harvard, 5 for Cornell, 3 for Pen, 1 for Princeton, and none for Brown .... the ESPN site is not up-to-date wit "commits" (as evidenced by the fact that it doesn't list any commits for Columbia)

Our best WR in the last ten years, if not longer, was Austin Knowlin, who was maybe 5'10" on a good day.

Jale, is there a good reason why Dartmouth, Yale and Harvard always seem to have a number of "early Admission" football players and we don't seem to have any ???

And how does Asia Sunset get so much inside information on Penn football recruiting? Could he be a program insider who is leaking info? Amazing knowledge of the status of Penn recruiting.

While it's interesting to see the names, some stats, perhaps the flattering videos, I have no problem how fast it all gets out. My serious interest is the way they play, how soon they make an impact. But this is the equivalent of baseball's hot stove league, I guess.

I have heard very good things about the kicker, should be able to make an impact right away in the special teams games

I think recruit Richard Wolff will be a good one. He made first team all-conference as a sophomore, missed his junior year with an injury and then came back in his senior year to make first team all-conference again in addition to first team all-area. Plus he plays center and has a 4.4 GPA - centers need to be smart!
