Senior Day?

This image appeared on my Facebook feed today. It is a disgusting sham

Saturday is supposed to be Senior Day at Wien Stadium.

But for Head Coach Pete Mangurian, it will be one last chance to stick it to the most loyal and talented members of the team.

In the two deep released yesterday, senior Marcorus Garrett is not even listed. Are we still supposed to believe he’s too banged up to start?

Senior TE Hamilton Garner is still listed as a backup, this time to a new starter freshman John Hunton.

No senior WR’s are listed.

Only one senior, OL Jimmy Yukevich, is listed as a starter on offense.

Four seniors are listed as starters on defense, but no other seniors even make the D as backups.

Senior P Paul Delaney and senior PK Luke Eddy are on the special teams.

The deliberate Mangurian policy to basically field a JV team this year doesn’t seem to be taking even a short pause for what’s supposed to be “Senior Day.”

The athletic department’s promotional material, which many of you probably saw in your email or on Facebook & Twitter, is particularly sickening as anyone in the know knows the seniors have been especially mistreated and disrespected by Coach Mangurian, often for no good reason.

When then-senior OL Scott Ward ’13 was not even invited to the 2012 training camp, despite the fact that he had been and All Ivy player, well that was a screaming alarm bell that I should have made more of at the time. But I was trying to give the new coach and his staff a honeymoon period, and that turned out to be a mistake.

Coach Mangurian does not know how to win in the Ivies on any level. He isn’t teaching the basics to the players, he isn’t instituting game plans that make sense in this league, (see Princeton’s James Perry for a tutorial on that), and he isn’t treating Ivy League athletes, who are a different breed entirely, in the appropriate way.

If Mangurian and Dianne Murphy, who went out of her way to unilaterally hire him, are not let go in the coming days or weeks, the Columbia football program is going to be a lost cause.

I guarantee we will go 0-10 next season if Mangurian is still the coach. No, we won’t even beat Georgetown.

This is a disgrace, and in the coming days more and more Columbia football alumni will be making their displeasure public.

This cannot stand.

So Lee and Dianne's great coaching hire eliminated our JV team and made the JV the varsity, and without telling the public. How anyone can defend this idiotic malfeasance is beyond understanding.

I continue to recall the image of the starting QB for Cornell going up to his head coach and the 2 of them embracing each other before the start of last week's game. It was an emotional moment for all that saw that on TV. Win or lose that is what I want our boys to feel for their coach after 4 years of playing for him. That is the emotion that should be felt on senior day. I am sad for these senior boys that they will not have those feelings with their own coach. BUT they will carry that feeling for each other and will have the heartfelt support from their teammates, the families and the fans. I wish them all the best and a big thank you in helping to mentor my son this past few years and for doing the best they could with a very bad situation. A win for them this week is what we all want!

No disrespect to the freshmen and sophomores, but our juniors and seniors have experienced an enormous amount of loosing during their time playing football at Columbia. It especially breaks my heart for our seniors. They were great mentors for my son also and he will always consider them brothers. I have nothing but the utmost respect for them and the character they've shown . I wish them all the best, they are a fine group of young men. God Bless You All.

ostracising underclassmen points to a deep character flaw with Mangurian. Just no regard for the collegiate careers of the players, the sacrifices they have made to be part of the team. It shows a complete disregard for them as people, not even getting an opportunity. Sickening.

Thank you to all of the seniors and their parents. We know that you have made many sacrifices your senior season and thank you for finishing the job. We applaud you for your dedication to the team and the football program. Try as they may NO ONE (yes, that means you Pete Mangurian)can deny the amount of character, work ethic, and mental toughness that you possess. These qualities and your determination helped you make it through a tough season. Good luck in your final game this Saturday and just know that are we behind YOU, the players, 100%!
Go Lions!
