Staten Island Signee

It's always special when Columbia football brings in a player from New York City.

And that's what we got this month when Zach O'Neill from Staten Island's Monsignor Farrell committed to the program.

Staten Island remains a pretty football rich region by NYC high school football standards, so hopefully Zach will be the first of more from the borough of Richmond to come our way.

Killer loss at Levien last night. Once again we snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, but this time did it twice, in regulation time and in OT.

Could they have intentionally fouled after the Lo bucket near the end of regulation ?

Yes; that is what they did in the Cornell game. Huge mistake not to do it here.

Also, Cohen had fouled out; he was guarding Cannady tight. Cannady was left wide open for his 35 footer. The basketball gods were not smiling on us; we snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Tehre was alos a huge disparity in FTs. One ref called a foul on us just about every time a Princeton player drove to the basket and failed to return the favor. that is why they went to the line 18 more times than us. And then Rosie didn't get the call at the end of OT when we wer down by 1. Officiating is always a problem for Columbia.

Agree with the officiating discrepancy. Towards the end Princeton drove the basket every chance they got and our guys were afraid to be called for fouls leading to easy quick baskets which fueled their comeback. Rosenberg was all but mugged !

There are some who feel that the coach needles the referees so often and so publicly that they turn against us and start to favor the opposing team. I cannot believe, having been there, that our guys fouled the P's TWICE as many times as they fouled us.

Spec quoted Smith saying they were supposed to foul late, added they didn't. Not sure if he told them to or he failed to.

Despite his overall good play, Alex missed one of 2 FTs very late, thus giving the Lions a 3-point lead which was wiped out with one shot.

Bagnoli was on a local television show (SportsNet?) during which the planned bubble was noted.

What are our chances against the "Killer P's" on the road
this weekend ?

Excellent; we looked great most of last weekend and our seniors are smarting from having the last Princeton game slip away. Our biggest concern is the 5 on 8 problem. The refs sent Princeton to the line 18 more times than us in the last game, and the officiating at Princeton is usually abominable.

I;d say pretty good if we play to last weekend's standard. And Friday's game is on TV, on American Sports. Not sure yet, however, if it's on that weird 2.5 hour delay like last week.
