Moment #75: Opening Punch in the Face

Anthony Gaffney

You'd be hard pressed to find any single Ivy League player in 2012 who dismantled an Ivy opponent as much as Anthony Gaffney did to Columbia in week three.

And it all started on the very first play.

Before most of the fans were even totally ready for the game to start, Gaffney took the opening kickoff down the east sideline for a stunning 94 yard TD.

To say that Columbia never really recovered from that would be true, but that would unfairly gloss over the other things the freshman Gaffney did in the game on the defensive side of the ball to burn the Lions time after time.

But the kickoff return by Gaffney was not indicative of how well the Lions did on kick coverage in 2012. On the other 30 kickoffs, Columbia opponents averaged just 17.8 yards per return.

Although Columbia did not recover from that opening kickoff that day, the special team adjustments on coverage were remarkable for the rest of the season. As statistically noted, they never made the same error twice. Kudos to coaching staff and coverage unit !!
