Moment #76: Brackett Goes over the Line

Sean Brackett '13 amassed some impressive career stats as Columbia's starting QB from the middle of 2009 through 2012.

But more important than the numbers was the size of Sean's heart and the intensity of his fight to give the Lions the best chance to win week after week.

Unfortunately, that fighting spirit wasn't rewarded with victory as often as it should have and the final drive against Fordham in week two was a bitter example of just that.

Trailing 20-13 with 3:10 left, Columbia took over at its own 45 on what it knew would be its last best chance to tie the score and send the game into OT.

The drive started disastrously, with Brackett throwing two incompletions and getting hurt after throwing the second.

When backup QB Andrew Weiss '13 had his 3rd down pass batted down, it looked pretty much like the game was over.

But Brackett came back in and somehow completed a 16 yard pass on 4th and 10 to Isaiah Gross along the west sideline.

But a few plays later, the drive appeared to be stalling again as the Lions faced a 3rd and 13 at the Ram 28 with 1:26 left.

On that 3rd down play, Brackett appeared to go over the line of scrimmage as he threw an incomplete pass to Hamilton Garner. But the refs did not throw the flag.

On the next play, Brackett would not be so lucky.

Despite throwing a fantastic pass that Marcorus Garrett somehow grabbed in coverage at the back of the north end zone, this time the officials noticed Brackett had indeed crossed the line.

The flag meant loss of down and essentially ended the game for Columbia.

A senior QB crossing the line of scrimmage on two consecutive plays?

I just read the article on The Harvard Crimson about their new transfer LB from Ohio State .... the article mentions the transfer QB from Clemson who is going to Yale ... no mention in the article about Columbia QB transfer Nottingham .... this may be typical Columbia paranoia, but the Lion roster has not been updated to reflect Nottingham or any of the incoming freshmen ... how come ??

Don't worry, he's still here.

Nottingham is interning at the law firm of one of our most dedicated alums, who has assured me that he is ready to play for us. It isn't going out on much of a limb to predict that he will be the best QB in the Ivies for the next two years.
