Addressing the Problem
Head Coach Pete Mangurian had some interesting quotes in the Columbia Spectator today about the offensive line and the pass protection issue.
He focused too much on lack of execution for my taste, and I wish he had spent more time acknowledging the play book needs to change to account for the weakness, but at least he spoke somewhat candidly about the problem.
He also had high praise for Kendall Pace despite some of his issues last Saturday and I share Mangurian's belief that Pace is a great player of the near future.
There was also an odd comment at the end of the piece where Mangurian bemoaned the fact that college football doesn't have a "waiver wire," and you're stuck with the personnel you have when the season starts.
Of course, that't true. But that's the reason why you can have 100+ players on a college roster and not the 53 you get in the NFL.

That comment about the waiver wire struck me as odd as too. I just put it off on him being an "different" type of guy.
I didn't think the comment odd at all. He comes from pro ball, where if you don't perform, you're waived and replaced. College ball is different, especially among the Ivies where depth at certain positions is less than ideal. If your starter doesn't execute, you may not have a viable alternative. Seemed pretty clear to me.
This is the recent history of Columbia football. The coaches are capable, and the recruits look good, especially in the last six years, but at crunch time the execution hasn't been there. (Recall all-Ivy senior Adams jumping offsides and triggering the Great Meltdown against Pen two years ago.) Wilson kept his public criticism mild and within the family, and Mangurian has chosen not to. Whether that helps guys get over the hump or makes them press too hard, we'll see. I don't think there's a talent gulf as big as recent scores would suggest among either the coaches or the players and their opponents. Whatever the problem is, it's obviously very difficult to diagnose and fix.
Anyone know salary ranges for Ivy coaches. Nothing compared to big time programs,I'm sure. Seems like an
80 hr. a week job. 10 months a year.
I find the comment odd and public ridicule poor. This isn't the pro's and these players aren't getting paid. If you want to say something, keep it behind closed doors.
Also, I don't know what pro league you are watching, but a player may get benched, but rarely after 1 game is he cut and a waiver picked up.
There are varying ways to handle things among college coaches, but I don't think I see a ton going in the press about a particular player with such a negative connotation.
Just my opinion, but what do I know.
This just goes to show how clueless Pete is!
If Pete is making anything more than the 200K range it would be criminal.
I really have no patience at all for coaches who blame lack of execution. I cannot stand coaches at any level who blame the players for their own failure to prepare properly for opponents; to deflect blame in any way away from themselves.
Be a man Pete and own up to your abysmal failure to be the right fit as head coach at CU. Please capitulate and resign immediately rather than continue your farcical charade as someone who can lead this group to a solitary victory. You're not playing Marist any more.
Mangurian really wants nothing to do with any Wilson recruits. He's said it in private, might as well say it in public too.
watch what happens when he plays the Frosh QB from California yikes!
ill say it again I can live with him playing the best kids on the field. Period. yes as defined by he him and the coaching staff.
Their jobs are defined on wins and losses still last time I checked.
AND-if he does get the boot those to classes will right in line trying to get attention and PT for a new coach...ask BN
sorry two not to
Ivy League HC?
try 650K plus bonuses etc
Al's Wingman sounds like foehi. As I have previously said, with friends like that we don't need enemies. How about for the next eight weeks supporting our guys instead of ranting about the coach. If people who follow this blog want to see our kids pick up some support this is not the way to do it. Again, Jake"s apparent belief in the applicability of the First Amendment continues to mystify me in light of Jake's love for Columbia football and the young men who strap on their chinstraps each Saturday.
Oldlion, it would hardly seem like a fan based blog if there weren't people posting the good and the bad.
I personally don't want to read everything on here, but that is what makes the whole thing work as diversity of thought is shown.
Lehigh vs Fordham on television Sat.
