Hilinski Gets the Start

It's your team now, kid!

Columbia's game notes are now out and freshman QB Kelly Hilinski is listed as the starter.

This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who saw the game at Princeton on Saturday. I thought Hilinski stood tall, literally and figuratively in the pocket and showed real promise directing traffic before the snap.

I've also been following Hilinski on Twitter for months now and he really appears to be a smart, funny, and very grounded young man.  (By the way, so does Trevor McDonagh in that regard).

I'm sure the coaches wish they could wait a little longer before throwing the freshman out there, but he seems like our best option now.

Hell, I know I'm being optimistic on the kid... but that's what we need right now.

The two deeps also have a lot of changes at some other positions, including some shuffling on the O-line and it looks like D-line starter Wells Childress is out.

If the kid can get us to the opposing 40 most of the time, Delany should keep them backed up. At least they should be able to keep the score reasonably close.

Wow. 3 of our first 4 games will have been played against ranked opponents in the FCS top 25. I also see that due to more injuries, additional frosh are in the "2-Deep".

I spent the whole summer warning about out murderous schedule and how we as fans needed to adjust our expectations and how the coaches needed to adjust their game plans to protect the players.

Looks like no one listened, as usual.

Based on the teams played and their Top 25 rankings, I personally don't feel so bad about our rough start especially with a coach in only his second year. Our expectations have been too high. In other words Jake, we didn't listen to you!

Jake,
I doubt if any of the FB staff reads the blog,
Every once in a while someone hits the nail on the head.

Looking back on the season that has been played, we have competed well in the first half against these ranked opponents. The 2nd half has been our problem because of too many 3 and outs and lack of depth with the loss of Adebayo and others. The frosh haven't been half bad either.

That may be true but what caused us from being competitive this year against Princeton as we were in last years game?

I don't know which coaches are reading this blog, but many of them do. The Campbell Center ISP address is my #1 reader source.

The players spend a lot of time there as well.

Yes, the expectations were too high on the part of anyone who expected three wins at this point. But it was not too much to expect that CU would avoid getting hugely blown out three times.

And most likely here comes another one. Sorry, but for me at least this is not a booster site. It's a truth telling site. Call them like we see them. When things change, then hallelujah.

I think the new qb has potential
although CU should not be running a pro-style offense. Of course, there is no qb on the team who could run a different offense -- so good luck.

What has happened to Connor Nelligan? An outstanding player who seems to have disappeared. Same with Isiah Gross, as several people have noticed.

Connor Nelligan leads the team in receptions. According to the team game notes, he's ranked 6th in the Ivy.

I think Mitch meant Chris Connors. Yeah, he is MIA.

Chris Connors has been listed in the two-deep every week except today. Andrew Dobitsch #48 is listed in his place now. Who's he Jake?

Mitch S.'68CC said...

Yes, I meant Chris, thanks for the correction and info.

Nelligan is the most talented WR on the team. He was moved out of the slot this year and has been less effective and targeted less. Bad move by OC.

McDonagh was squashed by the 300lb Princeton DT last week. He has also been ineffective. Who else is left other than Hillinski?

Chris Connors is likely in the doghouse (healthy scratch) because of the social media tizzy he was involved in (was it last year? I forget). If that is the case, Pete is a schumucktard for keeping talent off the field.

Connors may have been injured. If anybody would have been in a politically correct doghouse it would have been Chad W, and he has played with the first unit all year. You can criticize the coaches for all manner of things, I suppose, but I really think they are keeping players off the field for any reason other than injury or lack of effective performance. I actually am puzzled as to why neither Connors, Gross, nor Wanamaker has been on the field. And despite my frustration with the terrible results this year, I think it is difficult for us to overstate the significance of losing Nottingham and Adebayo in week one.

Maybe those players you and others speak about are injured. It could be that simple.

In their write ups on the roster it says that they had issues with injuries and conditioning and were working to improve in these areas. We might get their services soon.

Excuse the typo. I meant to say that I really don't think that they are keeping players off the field for any reason other than injury or lack of production.

Today is the day that Columbia set the losing streak record with #35 (to Princeton).
