Maybe they will have a gladiator type arrangement to see which of these OL guys actually makes the roster.

Oh well, for solace check out our winning women's squash team. Not only do they win but their uniforms are really cute.

Here's a nice shot of new recruit Dylan Weldon from Bishop Gorman in Nevada. His school won their 5th straight state title and their QB was Randall Cunningham Jr. Weldon isn't big at about 5'9", 170, but is known as "white lightning" according to Hudl. He had 6 interceptions his senior year, was 2nd team All-State. Amazing how we get these guys considering our record and rep, PM must have some magic after all.

5 wins in a row for Kyle Smith with Cornell up next (again). Should be 6 in a row (Cornell's only with this year against a Div-III team). So far so good...

Some Administrators and alums wonder WHY we think Pete is over his head... He just signed a RB who is 5'8", 175 lbs(if he is holding a bag of wrenches). 3.4 GPA and 1840 SATs. I will not name the player because it's not about him, and I am sure Jake will announce him shortly (pun intended). Are you kidding me??? If you are going use a Low Band slot, why waste it on someone eligible to play Sprint Football! Harvard has explained their formula for success over the years by using these key slots for offensive and defensive linemen because they will earn multiple Letters. Who knows, maybe this kid will be our new center? I am dumbfounded by the mistakes this guy continues to make. He is completely clueless!!! Why, why, why take a hobbit RB and waste that key slot???!!! BTW this kid's highlight tape starts off with kickoff coverage and him making a blocks. If you are and RB, wouldn't you start with a running play? Who does that?!! Unbelievable!!!

P.S. NO other offers from any other Ivy! A "find" by Pete and his staff? I don't think so. Apparently this is the only type go kid he can get (G'Town and Sacramento State offers- who cares!). With these low grades and SATs, why not get a 6'4" -5" D-Lineman???!!! Again, complete waste of a slot!

Seriously, there should be some oversight on idiotic moves like this. Why isn't Dianne or Ray scrutinizing these offers?

#1 Lion,
Dylan Weldon, the player you seem to be describing in such "glowing" terms, also happens to be a pretty awesome cornerback with a 40" vertical jump and great speed. Not a bad get at all given our weakness at that position.

Clueless? Right.

#1 Lion is confused about Dylan Weldon...he played some running back because of his speed but his main position is DB and that's where he made All-State. Give it a rest, #1.

You can't teach height... At 5'8"-9", I would do just what Booker T. Washington HS did against him this Fall, exploit the height differential. And if he was THAT good, where are all of his other suitors? No other Ivy, D-1, or mid majors saw what we see??? All i am pointing out are the fact. YUou may not like them, but don't kill the messenger. And i couldn't find him on the All-State list???

Here's your answer, #1 Lion...Weldon 2nd team All-State according to these guys. Take it as you will...

Nothing at all wrong with a 5'8", 59" player. We can always pull the emmitt smith, barry sanders, wes welker card but why bother. This kid seems ideally suited for free safety where speed, open field tackling and an eye for the ball goes a long way. He's probably not suited for CB due to matchup problems but play on special teams, kick returner, etc.

As for why he was not overly recruited,..stacked up against other classes, maybe he's not what other programs need. OR, other programs have enough of a pipeline. I think this kid has some good qualities which will make him contribute to what is on the CU roster right now. You have to think in terms of guys that are versatile. Enough big guys in this class. The Weldon kid fills a need.

nothing wrong if you are playing in high school. this highlight tape looks like a grammar school game.
very reminiscent of a recruit ray had. an all american from new mexico that was 5 foot 6 and arounf 150 pounds. he got crushed and was a waste of a spot.
we are beind and falling faster than a man in a weight suit off the empire state building

Please don't compare this kid to Emmet Smith, Sanders, or Welker, that's embarrassing. Also, have we gotten to the point where we now recruit special teams players (who aren't kickers)? Look, it's not about this kid. Bravo for him getting in! I hope he does well and proves me wrong. The fact is that he fits the criteria for Sprint football: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sprint_football If you watched any of the games this year, you saw that we were out-matched both physically and mentally (on the field and on the sidelines).

My concern is how the staff uses their slots. I think that we can all agree that if we were going to take a “bubble” student athlete, we should be more selective with the caliber of athlete we make these offers. I’m looking at the class that Princeton, Harvard, Yale and Cornell are putting together and I am concerned. I would concede that you never know until they show up on campus, but lots of these kids had offers from Div.-I schools. PU just secured Kurt Holuba http://rivals.yahoo.com/footballrecruiting/football/recruiting/player-Kurt-Holuba-144775;_ylt=AnD_Jxynk1wYhhd4NpXXkhFDPZB4 (offers from Stanford, Duke, Georgia Tech, BC, etc.) and the recent NJ Gatorade Player of the Year (Mark Fosatti) http://highschoolsports.nj.com/news/article/3446270603773619868/football-st-josephs-mark-fossati-commits-to-princeton/
Now those are the cornerstones of a Class… My point is that we can and should have a full stable of guys like this…

I hear what you're saying -- I'd love to have Princeton's recruits but I'm afraid a 0-10 record is a hard sell, even with the delights of NYC to pitch. The job might be easier for a new coach, again beginning a rebuilding project at Columbia. But who knows.

Unknown said...

LOL, give it break. The kid did have OTHER D1 offers, only 1% of HS seniors get those, but he's not good enough for CU? LOL. He has SPEED, a rare thing in the Ivies. They do call him "white lightning". And you can find TONS of 5'9 CB in the NFL.

Jake said...

I think we're all suffering from an inferiority complex when it comes to our recruiting draw.

We are one of the top five most selective schools in the country now, AND we're in NYC, which people under the age of 50 don't see as a negative but as a huge positive.

No matter how bad our team was last year and no matter how bad a coach Mangurian is, we STILL should be attracting the best out there. Only the underachievement of our coaches is to blame for sub-par recruiting.

Once again, we find people making excuses for our failures even before they happen!

Unknown said...

and you can find a ton of 5'9" dbacks that were at Columbia with speed and never did anything. How does the NFL even get into this conversation? Speed in the Ivy's is very prevalent, just not typially at CU

typically

Jake said...

Mangurian tells us never to lower our expectations and then his supporters like Barker tell us to do just that. The truth is Mangurian talks down Columbia and the inherent negatives he sees in the program all the time. This is a real campaign to get everyone to expect 0-10 and feel lucky if we go 1-9. It's sickening.

#1 Lion, I am not comparing an incoming freshman to NFL hall of fame players. My statement spoke to height and football quality/ability.

Special teams can turn a game around. Of course, that won't matter if there is no defense. My point is simply that you need team speed and if a kid can be part of that solution, bring him in. I agree you need to use the bands effectively. My analysis is Pete is just using a rake and pulling in whomever qualifies and wants to commit at this point. That does not diminish the potential contribution of the Weldon kid.

Jake said...

If that's the way Mangurian is recruiting, "using a rake, etc" then that's the #1 reason he should be fired.

Does this guy have any idea how valuable an Ivy degree is? Wasn't he the one who told us he was looking for a special kind of "Columbia-type guy?"

Going for anyone who passes the mirror test is a slap in the face to the entire Columbia experience and the hard work the other sports' athletes do to get in here.

If what you say is true, than Pete Mangurian is the equivalent of the NCAA death penalty.

Anonymous said...

The rake is just what it looks like to me. I don't think Pete has a notion how to fix the larger problems. This will be the last season for him so I hope a few of these recruits are the real deal.

alawicius said...

All you guys lowering the boom on Pete are doing a disservice to the Lions. Sure he has to do better, but as long as he's staying, we may as well give him a chance, maybe even some support. How about some common sense?

Anonymous said...

I'd like to give Pete the benefit of the doubt, fresh season, leave it all behind but the damage the guy has done is ridiculous. It's been talked to death on this blog. If he was humble and losing we would still say he has to go. The fact that he is arrogant just makes it the absolute wrong fit regardless.

The way he is recruiting right now smacks of someone fighting for his job which is a good thing. The bigger programs in DI do that all year so let him feel that pressure and see what he can do in year 3.

WOF said...

Speaking of common sense, Can you tell me why he doesn't have the common sense to reach out to the former players, alums, students, and fans and try to build support and enthusiasm from within those important communities? Any college coach should know how important that is.

If you want to suggest that those communities are unwilling to accept him I will tell you that someone should be telling him that he should consider being the bigger person, taking and accepting the heat and trying to earn public sentiment through his actions. His us against the world approach is pitiful and causes way too much resentment.

He wanted this job, he should have known what to expect and what was going to be expected of him and he has failed thus far miserably.

Unknown said...

WOF-it is a good question, but i dont have any answer for you. I can speculate that the former players are part of the problem he describes when tying to move away from losing. we are the losers i would gather from his statements.
however, he does adhere to the hot dog committee, which is made up of seemingly none of the better players in CU football history, so maybe they are the losers also.

WOF said...

I hear what you are saying Earl and if that is his mindset he would have to rank as the worst hire in the history of CU sports, and that is one lofty achievement.

I wonder if James Frankling treated the former players at Venderbilt like that. doubtful....
