Looking Ahead

Advice Time

The comments section from yesterday has some great advice to the players heading into this very crucial training camp beginning on Aug. 18th.

Coming in ready to go full speed at all times seems to be a common motif in that advice.

Obviously, a good number of the veteran players are staying in NYC this summer and will work together to get even more prepared.

But for the incoming freshmen, enthusiasm and super energy on the field is probably the best way to stand out in a system they have not yet learned.

In an email, Matt Sodl '88 had these quick suggestions:

-    Come in shape.
-      Be mentally prepared for rigors of camp.
-      Come with an aggressive mindset.
-      Know as much of the playbook and schemes as you can.
-    Also, expect for the upperclassmen to haze you…it happens on every team in some form/fashion.

Sacred Heart Shocker

Big Green Alert's Bruce Wood reports that Sacred Heart Head Coach Paul Gorham is seriously ill with pulmonary fibrosis but recovering.

Gorham has already had a double lung transplant and both of his legs partially amputated.

And yet he STILL wants to get back to coaching THIS year.

Here's how you can help Gorham get all the care he continues to need.

Quick Look: Fordham

Last week, I took a brief look at week one opponent Marist. I concluded that the Red Foxes are generally one of Columbia's weaker opponents for 2012, but they are still a serious challenge. A win over Marist would be a very good accomplishment.

Now for a brief, before training camp, look at Fordham and where that program is right now.

When Columbia fans last saw Fordham, the Rams were beating us 21-14 in the Lion season opener in the Bronx.

Fordham didn't win another game the rest of the season.

That led to the firing of Tom Masella and the hiring of former Fordham QB Joe Moorhead in the offseason.

Fordham's top offensive star appears to be Carlton Koonce, who burned the Lions coming out of the backfield as a receiver for a TD in last year's game.

QB Peter Maetzold, who had his best game of the year against Columbia, is also back but not a guaranteed starter for the 2012 season.

Fordham's Schedule is once again an interesting topic, as the Rams will continue their new policy of playing at least one FBS team. This year it will be Cincinnati in Ohio on October 13th.

Fordham will play Columbia in week four of its schedule, after games against Lock Haven (?), at Villanova, and at home against Cornell.

Okay, I checked up on Lock Haven and it's a Division II team that went 0-10 last year and lost each game by an average of 33 points.

This will get ugly.

I'll check back on Fordham later this summer, but for now this seems like a real must win for the Lions.

While losing to Marist in the opener would sting, I would not take it as the same kind of a negative that falling to the Rams in week 2 at home would be.
