Hanover Humiliation

Dartmouth 56 Columbia 0

Why Dartmouth Won

The Big Green dominated the line of scrimmage, and scored almost at will. They played a mistake-free game against an overmatched opponent.

Why Columbia Lost

The defense could not stop the run or pass, while the offense could not get a run or pass attack going. The Lions were physically outdone in every aspect of the game.

Key Turning Point

-There was really only one: after Columbia went three-and-out to start the game and Dartmouth drove down field for a TD on the ensuing possession. The game was over right there.

Columbia Positives

Another solid game from punter Paul Delaney.

Columbia Negatives

-RB Marcorus Garrett left the game with an injury in the 1st half.

-The generally decent defensive play of the last two weeks made no appearance at Memorial Field Saturday.

-The offense is showing no improvement and actually seems worse.

Conclusions

In my many decades of following CU football, I have never seen us as bad as this. There is simply no excuse for it.

There's really nothing else to say.

We have now entered into the area where the focus is no longer on the players but on the "coach watch".

This coach was so mean he even removed the team's 20 year chaplain Fr V. 2 days before the season! Kids now have no one to turn to help sort all this confusion and devastation of the program. Where is the help to put this all in perspective. It's a tough time for the players......what does it all mean?

I thought Harvards victory last year was the worst. We just have to get bigger and stronger on the lines and coach PM is working toward that in a systematic way. He got the lines down to their proper BMI and is putting the weight back on the right way. Our lines are bigger than last year but still a year away from being as big, if not bigger, than our foes. A little more patience is required guys.

This "coach" is an impostor. He has to go! Murphy needs to resign and Bill Campbell needs to fade into retirement and stay away from the football program. They created a debacle these three stooges.

I have yet to see a team where the o line was lean and cut. Maybe D ends but not d tackles and o line. Our opponents who thrash us don't look like that. It's about explosive power, not bmi for line. For life after football, it will serve them better. For now it puts them at a disadvantage. Fans should be patient with wins and loses when they see glimmers of hope and weekly improvement. Please tell me what about last year to this year does anyone see to warrant patience. Please point to anything. Anything.

That's right, Jake! I've followed CU football since the mid 60's, and NO team has ever had a worse season, or a worse game, than this one right here! And that's really saying something! All those kids who came in here with high hopes, well, tough luck, boys, the joke's on you.

When I was a hs coach we got feelers from Bill Campbell about some of my players. Thank God I was not a big enough pig to recommend they go to Columbia. I saved them a
lot of grief and they had excellent experiences at Princeton and Yale. What a shameless heartless con this place has been for fifty years, and I see no evidence at all of positive change. Just disgraceful.

Anonymous said...

Well said Mitch! Just think of all of the football Jake has seen and for him to say something like this is very telling! Dianne, do the right thing... FIRE Pete and then take a long, hard look in the mirror and admit that it is time to go!

Anonymous said...

You've just let it slip why it is not the coaches' fault. Even Columbia alumni don't want the good football players they know to go to Columbia.

Most of the people on this board are inside the tent p'ss*** out rather outside the tent p'ss*** in. Although it's understandable that they would want to be protective of the players, it inevitably misdirects their criticism toward the coaches and away from the structural problems that bedevil the football program. So every couple of years, we fire a coach in a fit of disappointment and outrage, and the whole cycle starts up all over again.

Anonymous said...

I have no idea how those of you here suggest patience and think the weight of lineman is going to matter. Our coach is the absolute worst and no weight gain is going to change that.
Patience is also no longer warranted when we have regressed. This is the most poorely coached team I have ever seen.
He is a disgrace and the University is belittling the kids.

Anonymous said...

To those here that suggest CU alumnae don't want the "good" players going to CU or it is the players and not the Coach...simply put that thought process is ignorant.
1. I thought our coach was a great recruiter and if that is the case he should be able to get the talent regardless.
2. You obviously don't know IVY football since the talent gap is very small and no team should not be competitive.
3. You are totally ignoring the fact that this team has gone backwards and the coach has not prepared them well for one game. For example, having a frosh QB behind an undersized line with limited receivers trying to pass from the first series! From the get go that is a bad game plan.

So enough with the kid blaming and we can't get the talent, etc. You can't say he is a great recruiter and then say we don't have the talent or can't get it or the kids can't execute.
In other words leonardo, you hit the iceberg and the ship is going down, you just don't want to realize it yet.
Hang in there kids, this to shall pass.

Fr V WAS REPLACED. After 20 years. He was sent to Columbia cyberspace, essentially. This whole production needs his non-denominational prayers now more than ever! Good chance to keep this whole debacle in perspective.

Anonymous said...

Jake , you are wrong , there is a lot more to say. "The generally decent play from the defense" was not that great yesterday why? How would you play if you were on defense and the offense does nothing?there was zero improvement yesterday. If anything the team was worse. I am not criticizing the guys on offense, I am wondering why the OC is still here. He is not doing his job. These kids were all players in HS , I'm sure pretty decent , otherwise they wouldn't have been recruited. But yesterday? They looked like 6th graders out there.the fault is not theirs, there is talent, but the OC is letting it go to waste. Shameful.i have to hand it to thesguys for still showing up. They are still obviously passionate about FB . They want to please us as parents , and fans. I give them applause for that. I would be ashamed of myself if I were their coach. So Jake if I were you I would go a little easy on the defense, they've given it their all from day one.

Anonymous said...

The reference to our alumni funneling good recruits to other programs refers specifically to what Mitch, CC'68 said. More generally, of course, the problem is that after a half century, any good football would have to be drawn by other, non-football factors before he'd come to Columbia.

If the talent gap is so small, why is the disparity in scores so large? After listening to PM in various venues, it's clear he's teaching what needs to be taught. But when the players get out on the field, they don't perform at the same level as the players on other teams. Since this pattern is 50 years old, I'd point to the structural problems of Columbia football. and not to the individual deficiencies of any single coach.

Last, a frosh QB with an undersized line and limited receivers? What other choice did he have? He lost Nottingham in the first game, and contrary to the assumptions of some on this blog, it's not as if he has better players--linemen or QB--that he's withholding out of spite sitting on the bench.

In short, alumni with pitchforks may surround the castle and demand the head of the king. But believe me, two years after they dethrone him, we'll still be starving for victories.

Anonymous said...

Is that you PM writing on the blog defending your incompetence?

Anonymous said...

the point of the comment was that the gameplan was wrong from the start. you have one of, if not, the best runnning back and given the nature of the defense being on the field more often than not, a direct result of poor offensive calling, the game plan should have been ball control via the running game.
As all the mangurian supporters say in regards to "its not as if he has better players..." HOW DO YOU KNOW?
there is no conspiracy theory of Alumnae and high school coaches not sending their talented players to Columbia. That would be almost as large a conspiracy theory as Mangurian being a good coach...oh wait that theory actually got him this job.
Next i will hear that Mangurian is just breaking the players down before building them up. what other cliches can you use to defend this ineptitude!

Anonymous said...

Is that you PM writing on the blog defending your incompetence?

Re; NYU. Columbia tried scheduling Division III teams to get a win in the 1980s. That didn't work either.

Anonymous said...

No, sorry it's not Mangurian defending his incompetence. You don't elude my criticism that easily.

Did you notice they tried ball control? The result: 3 & out, 3 and out, 3 and out. You can blame the coach, but the fact remains we just don't have the players.

True, I don't know that Mangurian doesn't have better players. But he's a football coach with some experience in the NFL, and I'm not.
I think it is therefore reasonable to assume that he is playing the best personnel he has. If that results in three 50+ to nothing outcomes, then the talent gap is wider than anyone on this blog is willing to admit.
For this reason, I

Yes, it is customary for the captain to go down with the ship. In a situation where Columbia football has already sunk a whole armada, it seems somewhat beside the point to insist on this tradition.

This is not to suggest that ad hoc criticism cannot be made of Mangurian. It can, and has been, about every preceding Columbia coach. But once again, unless we confront the structural problems that beset the football program, you are simply demanding that many more future coaches go down with the ship.

Al's Wingman said...

when you say structural problems, what are the specifics? Is it a matter of CU upper administration making necessary concessions to improve the program? What are those concessions? If the program has sufficient financing for recruiting and facilities are already improving within whatever constraints NYC affords, what is left to right the ship?

Anonymous said...

And what are those problems that an invested motivating creative coach and staff can't overcome???

Anonymous said...

I don't know. It might be money, it might be support, it might be any one of a dozen other things. All I'm saying is that there is a deep-rooted issue here, and that unless we carefully examine what that might be, firing one more coach ain't going to help.

Anonymous said...

Why don't we just name the lavatories in the Campbell Center "Mangurian Halls" and his donation for this honor is his over-paid salary.

Anonymous said...

The question is, what would Murphy, Estes, ANC Bagnolli do with our team? Answer... WIN!

Anonymous said...

This is a structural issue. Just look at the Campbell Center. There was a fool who defended this white elephant as a great facility. It's not. Anyone who played here knows that what the program needs is a practice facility close to campus and for that moron who used brown as an analogy... browns practice facilities are on campus. the univ owns multiple city blocks north of 125. And so when Bill comes to them with this proposal what does he do...? He rubber stamps this white elephant project. If Bill C and others stood up to Boll and withheld their wallets until the athletic department and football was fixed you wold here seen real change. But since they are all yes men and rah rah boys this didn't happen and will never happen. The coach has lost his team. But the real problem is Boll and people like Bill Campbell who can't see the forest thru the trees. This is unfortunately a hopeless situation until someone like Kraft decides to get involved.

At this point, anyone who urges a hs kid to play football at CU is doing the kid a big disservice. Let the school figure out how to be competitive and I would love to recommend CU, but as it is now -- and as it has been for 50 years -- being on this team is getting set up for severe disappointment. And for any kid who is seriously invested in football, that can be really painful.

Is that not the kind of happy talk we're supposed to put on this blog? Not booster enough? Hurts recruiting? Tough f*****g s**t.

When I met with the coaches of the freshman team for the first time three thousand years ago, they handed out a document called "the ten commandments of football" or something hokey like that. One of the ten commandments was "be tough and aggressive, within the rules."

Then the coach told us to cross out "within the rules" because "I don't want to put any limits on tough football." I could see the look of incomprehension on the faces of the freshman players. Many of them (like me) had come from undefeated hs teams where we were coached to adopt "a higher standard." Well, here was our introduction to CU's cynicism and staff incompetence.

By far the most admirable person I encountered in the CU football program was Wyatt, the equipment manager. He should have coached the team!

I was at the D game. Only a few positives. Several receivers had separation for the first time. Punter again did great job. Frosh safety did well. Too many negatives to mention all.
Most obvious is poor tackling across the entire front line. Soft pass D by LBs and CBs. 4.5 yds per run will beat you every time. Praying for 1 win for kids ego boost.

Anonymous said...

That last post about "crossing out 'within the rules'" was a stunner. However to imply that the same type of problem exists today is unfair. Also to suggest that the problem is "structural" is off-target. The university is trying as hard as it can while attempting to keep football in perspective in an academic institution. The problem we have today is a combination of coaching and bad luck (losing our prize transfer in the first game). However misfortune, with rare exceptions, has long been an aspect
of Lion football. The only answer is to find a "lucky" coach, someone with the karma, personality, and ability to get the job done. PM has already demonstrated too many liabilities and it appears to be an impossible task for him to turn things around from this lowpoint. It's also a very tough decision for the administration and AD. All those calling for Pete's head should realize this. There is no easy solution but one has to be found if we are to continue to field a team in the Ivy League.

Anonymous said...

Your an idiot for deterring a student athlete from attending the #4 ranked academic institution in the country. Tells you where your priorities are. What a jerk!

Anonymous said...

Yes let's just let he administration win. Drop the football program. Boll would just love that. Big Bill is on the board of trustees This is all on him. He needs to admit failure and back those who want real change. Them step away. He has led this team into the abyss. Yes the program has always been bad but never this bad. This is a new low.

From 1924-29, Lou Little's record at Georgetown was 41-12-3 as he had the Hoyas knocking off some national powerhouses. His record at Columbia from 1930-56 was 110-110-10 including a Rose Bowl upset over a heavily favored Stanford.

Obviously a College Hall of Fame football coach had a tough time recruiting. Little recruited Sid Luckman into The New College for the Education of Teachers which during the years 1932 to 39 was an experimental part of Teachers College Columbia U. Little discovered that the New College had a Phys. Ed. major unlike CU and he could get football players matriculated there who couldn't get into CU. Even with Luckman at QB, CU only had one winning season out of three. I guess the Chicago Bears had a better supporting cast for Sid.

The only other period when Little had an easy time recruiting was after the end of WWII when the GI Bill sent some dynamite athletes his way. The 1947 upset of Army was in no small way attributed to Uncle Sam's GI Bill.

This is not a defense of PM. It's just the facts of the difficulty of recruiting at CU. However from the beginning of his tenure, I don''t like the way he evaluated his student athletes in public and in print. It seems that no one was ever good enough to meet whatever standard he set for a successful CU football player. With that kind of public pressure, I would be looking over my shoulder after every play.

For all that people hate what Mitch says he has a valid point. If there isn't a major commitment from the administration to better the program, which certainly has structural issues, then you are doing a disservice to the kids if you don't point out the potential pitfalls and issues. I chose the other path and wanted to be the spark of change as did many of my older and younger brothers. Ultimately the choice is the kids and the family not the high school coach or counselor.
I don't believe that recruiting is any more difficult at CU relative to other schools in similar geographic situations. I also don't think their is a talent gap of the magnitude reflected in the scores.
So, I don't believe it is the players. Is their a structural problem of a lack of commitment by administration, most definitely. Do I think the coaches have let the players down, no doubt. Do I think the players share some of the blame, yes. However, nothing is going to change until the administration takes football seriously and unless/until Campbell (also not to blame) says to make this or that change, nothing is going to happen. The university moves when money moves and unless the big donors push the envelope, I don't think much will change.

BTW Jake, you forgot to tell us who the Player of the Game is. If u were to give the award out, it'd probably be to the punter Paul Delaney as he's the only player getting the job done this season for the Lions.

Wow you are a genius. I bet no one on the coaching staff ever tthought of any of those things. Maybe the shocked look on their faces was because they couldn't believe the presumptuous crap you were spouting.

Presumptuous dung? Hello, they could use all the help and advice out there! They're a bunch of idiots!!! Seriously, a collective bunch of morons! The only BIGGER idiots are Campbell and Dianne for hiring Pete ( and all the People on this blog who contributed to this disaster)! Oh yeah, and the NHDC!!!

NHDC, nice!

My fear is that Pete fires some staff and promises change... Then we suffer again and again!

The staff all signed 2 year contracts when they came aboard. It's going to be a bloodbath after the season. Except Pete, of course. It will be everybody's fault but his. Too bad because he has some good guys on the staff.

Very well reasoned and convincing response. You are brilliant. Just the facts, no ignorant name calling.

Don't worry, we will beat Cornell and Yale.

the players have packed it in. if you are in a situation where you are being berated and are depressed and keep getting drubbed by opponents, what do you think is going to happen?
it isnt like CU hasnt had multiple coaches on the payroll before. Also, it isnt like our endowment isnt large enough to support it given they keep asking for more money.

i dont think we will beat anybody unless the other team doesnt show up. fat chance given every team is licking their chops

Can a parent chime in and tell us what is really going on inside the team? Do they hate the guy or is it just the upperclassmen that have been marginalized? And if your child is not playing and unhappy about it please try to make it as objective as you can.

Most everyone is anonymous on here anyway...

I don't know what everyone is complaining about. According to this article, CU won the game.
