With Praise Comes Information!

Taylor Weldon

A new piece lauding Columbia's recruiting efforts has just been published Hero Sports and it includes a brand new name to add to our unofficial list of incoming football commits.

That name is Taylor Weldon, a DE/TE who makes more sense for Columbia at the DE position.

Weldon comes from Southland Academy in Americus, Georgia maybe about 130 miles south of Atlanta. It looks like Weldon missed his senior season due to an ACL tear, but we'll see if he's healed in time for next year.

Based on my Lionfeeders recruiting database, Weldon would be the first Southland grad to come to Columbia football.

But the article in Hero Sports is really worth reading for more than the one added name. Our suspicions that getting 23 commits this early in the process was a good sign seem to have been confirmed. And the outspoken praise for Head Coach Al Bagnoli and the experience of playing Ivy Football are like cashing in dividends on a rising stock.

Here's our new list:

1) Kyle Baskin WR/DB 6-4 210 lbs. Quakertown HS Quakertown, PA

Great quote from Tanner Thomas from that article:
“There are multiple factors going into the making of the decision to go to Columbia,” Thomas told HERO Sports. “The prestigious academics, unbelievable placement of the university (in New York City), early playing time and the coaching. Having Al Bagnoli, one of the best coaches in the history of the Ivy League? I mean, that really impacts my decision as well.”'Bout sums up what our nationwide recruiting mantra should be...

I'm sure everyone's doing his best, coaches and players, but sometimes a little better is needed. Someone made a good point against using the shotgun close to our own goal line. Didn't a bad snap lead to a TD for Brown? And haven't we been without our first-string center all season, who would normally be snapping in the shotgun?

And why that rugby punt, which if memory serves, led to another Brown TD when it was blocked? It served no purpose there. Just kick a normal punt and make sure you get it out of your red zone.

Two avoidable mistakes, though the bad snap was a physical one, which happens. The rugby punt was a mental error and cost us the game. Great recruiting is essential, but avoiding blunders is too. Maybe Bags needs to have some deep conversations with his coordinators, assistant coaches and players.

Congrats to our seven all-Ivy selections and especially Akinleye and Molina for making first team. Well deserved.

This Weldon kids tape looks pretty good. Also did not realise that Matt Dame was all that. But has anyone got Intel on the calibre of the defensive backs coming in?
