Shakedown Street... Again





Every few months, (or is it weeks), I am forced to post the above song link to adequately convey the situation concerning the "community objections" to any and all Columbia projects around Baker Field or in Manhattanville.

Every few months, shakedown artists in the guise of "concerned residents" object to something Columbia is doing in their "community."

The latest round of b.s. concerns some trees that are being removed to make way for the waterfront park at Baker that was only agreed to in order to get these charlatans off Columbia's back.

But now, the complaint is that too many trees are being taken away, or not replaced fast enough, blah blah blah. 

I do have to give them credit for abandoning the green nonsense and adopting a whole new claim that more trees equal less crime! 

Who knew?


What to Support and How to Support It

I've made a consistent effort since before last season to make sure not to heap praise on anyone or believe the program has turned around until we see the WINS that will make it all deserved.

But there's a difference between adopting healthy skepticism and sitting on your hands when the team needs support. 

And that's my intro for a reasoned appeal for everyone to buy as many season tickets for Columbia football as soon as possible. 

Win or lose, there's little I enjoy more than an afternoon at Wien Stadium on a football Saturday. And the players always deserve our support, always. 

Remember that each of the six home games this fall have a lot to offer. Here are a few notes on each game:


Sept. 15th Marist

Season opener! Pete Mangurian's first game as head coach! Weather should be gorgeous.


Sept. 22nd Fordham

Liberty Cup XI. Crosstown rivalry renewed. 


Sept. 29th Princeton

Ivy League opener. Need revenge after last year's razor thin loss in NJ.


October 20th Dartmouth 

HOMECOMING. Chance for revenge for that narrow loss at Homecoming in 2010.


October 27th Yale

Yale has edged the Lions in agonizingly close games every year for what seems like a decade. Time to end this now!


November 10th Cornell

The 100th meeting! Empire State Bowl. Defending Ivy offensive MVP Jeff Mathews in the house! 


Obviously there's a lot more to say about each game, but those are the headlines for marketing purposes. 

I'd love to be able to report in a few weeks that season ticket sales are markedly UP compared to last year at that point in mid-July.

It's okay if you want to be "wait and see" about the new coach.

It's okay if you think we have a great coach now, but the A.D. needs to be outta here already.

It's okay if you only come for the free beer. 

But it's not okay to stay home and make these players work in front of empty stands week after week. 

So make the buy, make the trip, and make them proud.

Our Athletic Department needs to get going with a meaningful ticket sales campaign, or someone on the outside with marketing and sales savvy should be hired to help out. Give someone inside or outside the Athletic Department a monetary incentive to boost sales and something good will happen!

We have to fly in for the games, but the trip is well worth the cost. Seeing the young men play, seeing friends and having some fun in the city is always different. If we buy tickets and spend what we do to see the games, there is no excuse for those nearby not to buy season tickets. Take friends along as well.
