Monday Quick Hits

Roster watching is a vital activity for Lions fans for the next two weeks as we await news on any further changes to the lineup and the updates on player weights.

In a tweet made on Saturday, Head Coach Pete Mangurian remarked on how the team looked leaner and how he was pleased about that.

Yesterday's first day on the field at camp was marked by absolutely gorgeous weather. Those conditions will continue in NYC today before getting a bit hotter the rest of the week. Rain is not expected anytime in the near future.

Week two opponent Fordham is more than a week into its preseason camp and it already looks like last-minute transfer QB Michael Nebrich will indeed be the starter for the Rams. Nebrich worked under new Fordham Head Coach Joe Moorhead at UConn last year, and they obviously have a good connection.

did the F coach tell the new QB where to find the admissions office, or is that just an old fashioned formality?

The current president of Fordham, according to a F trustee who told me this personally, is absolutely desperate to have a winning football program in order to enhance the overall reputation of his school. This is only the start. I know that I am in the minority here, but I am not and have never been enamored of the concept that we should foster a rivalry with Fordham. I would feel differently about Georgetown, which is more of a natural rival in football because of its adherence to high academic standards.

I totally agree with you that it makes no sense to foster a rivalry with Fordham for numerous reasons including of course, the disparity between the two school's admission standards. The biggest concern, of course, is that having committed to going big-time in football, Fordham will accept anyone who can help the President and the Athletic Directors save their jobs. I just don't see the benefit of playing a Fordham type football program early in the season. Not dropping Fordham from the schedule last year when we had the opportunity to do wo was a mistake.

I didn't realize that we had an opportunity to drop Fordham last year. Was this when they went scholarship? For how many years are we committed to play them ? Games at Rose Hill are just awful, with no visiting stands. At least we get them at home this year.

My understanding is that any team on Fordham's schedule could have terminated their contract with Fordham when the Rams went scholarhip on the basis of material changed circumstances. However, that's just my impresssion and I could be wrong. Still, I doubt Fordham would have objected if Columbia said it wanted out, which I assume did not happen.
