Meet the Leading Lions: Louis DiNovo

DiNovo's best play of 2011 came in these conditions

Backstory

On December 14, 2009, DiNovo became the first publicly reported commit for the class of 2014. Like many recruits to Ivy League schools, he had been in the mix for some bigger programs before an injury his senior year. But that didn't stop a lot of people from singing his praises. Despite his injury, he was his conference's co-MVP that senior season.

Career Highlights

-Was officially one of the starters in the season opener against Fordham. Caught his first collegiate pass for an 11 yard gain and a first down during the Lions 4th quarter TD drive.

-Had his first big gainer against Sacred Heart with a 29 yard reception late in the game.

-Had his longest reception of the season a week later against Penn, a 41-yarder that was the key play of the drive that led to Columbia's 3-0 early lead.

-Had his best run after the catch on the snowy field in week 7 against Yale, taking a short pass for a 27 yard scamper deep into Eli territory.

-Had four receptions in the Lions sole win over the season vs. Brown.

-Caught at least one pass in all but one game, (the 37-0 rout against Dartmouth), despite mostly limited duty.

Scouting Report

Good speed and great nose for the ball, (DiNovo recovered several fumbles last year and covered up a blocked FG). Good instincts for running after the catch, great knack for getting open in the middle of the field. Needs to cut down on his drops.

Jake's Take

Could this be our "Wes Welker?" DiNovo has the size and the basic skills to be the perfect underneath-the-coverage weapon in the Mangurian offense. He should at least be a serious contender for that job after the many "Welker-like" plays he made last year.

I like DiNovo's spark and all he's been doing since spring 2011 to get noticed in a crowded WR field. I'd like to see that continue this fall.

DiNovo is a a quality receiver who is not frightened to catch the ball over the middle and run for a big gain. He has a nice burst of speed into second gear which makes him a threat to score from anywhere on the field. He has the ability to become one of the best receivers in the Ivy League, if he can improve on his speed in the open field.
