DC DB

Devin Williams

5-9, 180 pound DB Devin Williams has committed to Columbia.

He reportedly had offers from Harvard and Army and a standing offer from Stanford after he attended a Cardinal camp almost three years ago.

ESPN rates Williams as a three-star recruit and gives him a respectable 75 grade overall.

You can see his junior season highlights here.

Here's a video interview The Washington Post did with Williams at the end of his sophomore year when he “committed” to Stanford.

Williams will be the second documented St. John’s College HS grad to come to Columbia football after Claude Roxborough ’00.

5'9 DBs scare me in light of so many WRs and TEs at 6'3" +. Also most high school measurements are made standing their year books.

Height isn't so much of a problem (though it is better to be 5'9" than 5'7" playing DB). What you want out of a DB is positional awareness, SPEED, lateral control (not getting confused by crafty receiver routes) and great instincts. This is the 3rd or 4th guy part of this class with excellent athleticism for the defensive backfield. On one hand I want to congratulate Pete for targeting these guys since the need is so great. However, I am skeptical that was his strategy even though it seems to have worked out so well (at least on paper). I am thinking it was just the luck of the draw but if I am mistaken, kudos to potbelly pete.

Al,
6" height difference also means 6" wing span difference. Gigantic advantage to the receiver. Standing still 1 foot. Great position, speed, and instincts won't stop the high lob in the end zone.

Great pickup for CU. I'm sure the "breakfast club" will find something wrong with the kid even though Harvard,Army and Stanford loved him. SMH

Beggars can't be choosers. He's rated 3 stars and turned down Stanford, Harvard and Army for us. He comes from a power conference so I'm sure he's dealt with bigger and taller receivers. He can help us.

Al,
Put the two 5'9" DB recruits on the field at the same time, even if they possess all of your dream attributes, we will be 0/50 in 4 years. Give the other Ivy coaches some credit, even if most of us fail to give the Columbia staff any.

Danny,
Big HS 17 year olds are a lot different than big 21 year olds that are 20/30 pounds heavier
and stronger. At 5'9"? now, most likely 5'9" in 3 years.

That's true. But we have to start somewhere. PM found some good frosh last recruiting class. He's doing it again. Things will get better for our team. Researching this kid, it appears he's from the same conference as our LT Pace.

Pat, those aren't dream attributes, those are requirements to play DB at any level. Some of it can be coached, other attributes are natural ability which is what the Stanford coaches noticed int his kid and compelled them to give him a standing offer long before he was even a senior in HS.

The lob in the end zone remark indicates you are an armchair type observer with no insight into the sport.

Danny,
I agree, some of the recruits look very good now. 5'9" guys will have a better chance of helping at RB or kick returners.

Al,
As in most of your comments, you can not be further off base. QB for 15 years in top touch league in US 100%
passing. 300 + games. 1,000+ TDs.
How many have you thrown?

Al
That comment is the dumbest football related statement I
have ever heard. Evidently you don't watch NFL games. Red zone size matchups are a major strategy in any type of football. Sometimes it's better to keep your mouth shut and let people think you're dumb, than open your mouth and let them know you"re dumb

Al,
FYI. Red Zone means at or inside your opponents 20.

I'm 5'8" and you would never in your wildest imagination have the skill to throw a lob over my head. Never mind a perfect pass. Imagine what a player with vertical leap, positional awareness and solid, tactical coverage could do. You wouldn't know that because you have never done anything in the game worth mentioning. You have never played in the red zone or faced any DBs

Your personal attacks are so lame it just makes you a sore loser, as in your private life as well, isn't that right mr. softy?

Al,
I figured you for a shrimp. What phone book were you standing on to get to 5'8" NYC? Can you not read? How many passes have you defended?
I could lob a medicine ball over your head.

Al,
You better put some Windex on your crystal ball and get back on your meds.

Al is funny to a fault, insane and inherently negative ALL at the same time!! And he's Deion Sanders at 5'8"! I'm laughing hysterically! He also works for NSA too...

Al,
Watch the latest recruit video (Briscoe) WR to see what a height advantage does for a receiver. If you have time. Maybe you're out in the driveway doing a two handed backward dunk.

Anonymous said...

Danny,
Do you actually know Al?
If the above is true, I feel bad harassing him.

Unknown said...

No I don't know him.

Pat,

We have watched two years of historically bad football (and for CU, that is saying something) and the coach hides from the fans, students, former players and alumni.

Why exactly shoudl he/they be getting credit again?
