Promising rising sophomore TE Connor Spears has transferred to USC in Los Angeles.
Losing a 6-6 tight end with tons of upside hurts.
The abandonment of Pete Mangurian and his failed program continues.
There will be more defections from the sinking ship.

Ya know Jake, in the beginning your blog was an essential read and I happily contributed money to keep it going. But now you're part of the problem.
The fact is that we'll have Pete Mangurian as head coach for the coming season. He's recruited a pretty good class of commits and he has lots of young talent on the roster already. It looks like some of his supporting cast will change, hopefully for the better.
Broadcasting lines like "The abandonment of Pete Mangurian and his failed program continues" does nothing but demoralize the current players. How, in any way, does it help? Maybe Spears and Coach Cidzik didn't like NYC -- tons of people make the same decision after being there for a year or so.
I'm going to stick to voy.com from now on to give your ego a bit of room here. Thanks for the ride.

Have to agree with Ungvar. Jake, you're stinking up the joint. Spears is a rising sophomore, not a junior as you said, and his father, by the way, contributed to your blog.

I'm not going to lie back and enjoy it while Pete and co. take the program further and further down. Neither should you.

The kid is from LA area so may he got homesick or as noted by others, didn't like living in NY. He's a good talent but he does not seem essential. TE will be backfilled.
As for Pete taking the ship down with him, I don't see his year 3 death throes as any different from previous head coaches experiences at CU. Though, I do want to see the team do well. I'm willing to give it an open mind that he will make the necessary changes in his rigid thinking to make progress. If it is more of the same in year 3 then egging him Justin Beiber style is the best response I can think of right now.
Jake, the "evidence" is that he is recruiting the best student-athletes he can. Do you think that's easy in the face of last season, your blog, and alumni discontent?? In the light of his retention the smart and humane thing to do is to give him the chance to redeem himself. One more year...in the meantime it's foolish to undermine him and the program so mercilessly, and suggesting that he was hired to "euthanize" football can only be regarded as madness. Wake up, for chrissake!

He tore the team apart and gave us a historically bad season(s) and then he hid from everyone and bunkered in.
The onus is on him, not us. And the longer he hides from the public the worse it gets for him.
Really amazes me that he and his people don't get that.

Mangurian really did historic damage last year and it wasn't even his first season.
He has to go and go now. And just because he isn't likely to be fired doesn't mean we have to just lie back and enjoy it.
This is another great example of why these neophyte fans need to temper their expectations and arrogance and accept that many of us really have lived through this enough to know what we are talking about.
Every year a handful of recruits show up and never play, be it for injuries, lack of interest, or any numnber of other reasons. I remember we had a freshman recruit leave for home (Colorado) after the first week of camp! Others lost their interest in the sport, went throught the motions freshman year, and then proptly quit after the season. My roommate was a hgihly regarded lineman and had back problems that essntially limited his 4 year career to only a couple of games. We had a talented WR that quit to focus on getting into med school.
If you people really are just innocent new fans frustrated with our skepticism, I am sorry but it has happened nearly every year for the 30+ I have been part of the CU family.
The product Pete rolled out last year was awful and there was no improvement displayed as the season progressed. Arguing that an incoming freshman class that has not even showed up for camp yet is bona fide evidence that are fortunes are about to change is desperate and ignorant.
It is even sadder if they do get it and do nothing about it.
We won't know who among the frosh are playmakers until they get in a game. For now, this is just wheel spinning unless anyone has an idea for a coup d'état.
Piling on Pete won't change that he has to get it together for camp and field an overachieving team ready for the season. My fear is he won't change any of his ideas and the team will get pasted. I hope i am wrong but he has done nothing of note to help anyone have faith in his leadership.
In the event the coup d'état is successful however, the crappy assistant coaching staff will also be asked nicely to leave.

This is the crux of the matter. I understand Jake's frustration with PM. Reality implies a third year, regardless of feelings otherwise. However, the actual accomplishment in that 3rd year will define PM's future. I agree that with what I have personally witnessed (Fordham + every home game last year)the future does not bode well.

After reviewing the Penn recruits on Voy and seeing their many 1st team all-staters, it's not hard to see what we're up against. Only inspired coaching can level the playing field. Can Pete do it? I say since we have no choice anyway, let's give him a chance.
On a brighter note, if we beat Penn tonite we will likely be in 2nd place in the league.

Not for me! All sports count, and those involve more people than MBB, drawing from smaller HS pools.

I just saw this kicker's highlight tape. http://www.hudl.com/athlete/o/682269/#highlights/35901395 Is he good? Yes, but not great by any stretch. He needs a kicking coach. His form needs improvement. This Freshman year should allow him to make tremendous strides if he has the proper support. A good kicker can be a game changer in this league. Overall, a good "get" by Pete.
Fyi, Harvard and Yale got other kickers who they rated ahead of this kid, so just be aware that is wasn't a steal by any measure. Again, he looks good and I'm glad we have him, but don't make Pete out to be something he's not...
Princeton looks like they have the most talented class, followed by Penn, Harvard, Yale, Brown and then Cornell. Not sure what Dartmouth has, but once again we're at, or close, to the bottom. Obvioulsy, recruiting is not complete, but we're just getting leftovers now. By the way, beating out Johns Hopkinks and Tufts for a recruit is not a "win" in my opinion. The flip side is that our class can easily turn around if we get some transfers and/or Yellow Ribbon players through GS (like Baseball has).

This is an important question, because while football performance is the prime mover and subject on Jake's blog, it is only part of an overall long term issue which we have previously discussed.
Here are actual stats:
It turns out that our historical overall performance in the league since 1956 is the league's worst, @ 1.6 titles per year for ALL sports. The next worst performer since 1956 is Brown, with 33% more titles than us.
As it turns out, although the CU press touts our "improvement", we have achieved the same average of 1.6 titles for the past 5 years, so no improvement.
I expect that 2013-2014 will show a thankful spike upwards, but still no significant long term improvement.

Not sure how you can be so precise with your ratings,
If I am correct, not one 5 star rated player in HS played in the recent SB. True success is impossible to quantify at that yearly age. Same is true about Heisman? winners, not everyone is top producer in NFL.
You mean to tell me that this great recruiting class some are hanging their hats on to pull us out of mediocrity is actuallty no better than 7th or 8th in the league this year?

Seriously, nobody knows how good or bad this class is. Recruiting is an inexact science and when you add injuries and attrition to the mix it is even more of a dice roll.
Let's see how it shapes up in about two or three years before we say it was better or worse than any other year.
The kicker should do fine. He's got the Croatian soccer leg, maybe not a refined style at this stage but he'll pick it up. You can tell he's got range. I'm just glad we have "a" kicker to add to the mix (I know Cameron Nizialek is still on the roster but not sure where he stands). Still no punter?
Hey Danny, Quinn Epperly is leaving Princeton to walk on as a cheerleader at Slippery Rock State College where his sister is captain of the cheer squad. Good luck and all the best to him. I hope all Princeton's offense does the same.
By the way, how about some appreciation to Jake for consistently providing these updates on recruiting and coaching changes to the general public.
