Getting Restless

Fordham's season starts here in just three days

With 11 practices already under their belt, the Columbia Lions football team seems ready to start hitting someone other than their teammates.

It probably hasn't helped that the really hot and humid weather has returned to NYC this week, making working out on that field a definite challenge.

That won't have to wait more than two more days as Columbia will take on Kean College in a scrimmage Thursday afternoon. The season opener is still 18 days away at Fordham.

But this training camp has already been productive and positive compared to previous years. One thing I noticed is that a maximum number of practices have been logged before the disruptive effects of freshmen orientation kicks in.

Getting back to Fordham, the Rams opener at Army will be televised on the CBS Sports Network. This will give us all a chance to scout the opposition a bit.

This week will also mark the beginning of my weekly game predictions for all of Columbia's Ivy and non-Ivy opponents. More on that later as I try to recover from an off year, (meaning not so good), on my picks.

I guess that a scrimmage against another team is somewhat beneficial but all of Kean's lineman, except for one senior, are 230-270 pounds and all 6"1 or 6"2. This doesn't help Columbia's o-line or d-line. Their linebackers are all short and this doesn't help the overall development of this team. I'm sure that any small- school would love to scrimmage against D-1 talent. But, no D-3 football program would help Columbia prepare for lineman 5" taller, receivers and running backs ten times faster, and quarterbacks who are bigger and have better arm talent........

Well, that was an upbeat, all-kinds-of-cheery post above. I hear a dirge in the background, too,

A scrimmage is critical from an organizational standpoint for Columbia. We have 2 coordinators that have never worked with either the Head Coach or the other assistants. This scrimmage, regardless of the level of competition will really assist Columbia. They need to make a good showing against Fordham and can beat Georgetown the following week.

I understand the point about the completely new staff but in Spring, they did have a "spring football game". Also, they can practice communication in practice. This team needs to develop players and going up against Kean is not going to help them improve. Even though the coaching staff is new and have never worked together, practice is not about the coaches. Rather, it is ALWAYS about the players. We have underclassman starting at both guard spots and they need to go up against Niko Padilla and JD Hurt rather than D-3 offensive lineman. Also, By the way, Kean is a 2-8 D-3 school until they step foot onto the field to start the season. It is paramount that players don't just get repetitions but good repetitions.

Agree. Anytime you go up against a strange team and unknown plays/coaching, you get tested. The size differential may possibly help re reducing our injuries as well. This is a nice walk-through for us, and better than what we didn't do last year

Agree with Coach and Big Dawg re the scrimmage. This way many get to play and reducing injuries is crucial. Will probably not be an all-out slugfest.

Hey Jake, is there any word on us having a JV team this year?

Not this year. On hold for now.
