Twitter Problems Continue

It was less than a year ago that the Chad Washington/football team Twitter controversy exploded for Columbia.

For the record, Washington was basically cleared of every real charge in the alleged assault. And based on what I know, I think justice was served. I think Washington was unfairly accused of committing a serious crime when he wasn’t the instigator and no real serious crime was committed anyway.

But the Washington story quickly morphed into something else when various student media outlets took a look at Washington’s Twitter account and the Twitter accounts of several of his teammates. They found a long list of offensive and just plain dumb statements that caused a stir on campus.

I’m a major fan of Free Speech, but a lot of people have a tough time understanding what Free Speech really means. It means you CAN say whatever you like. It doesn’t mean you get immunity from any consequences based on what you say.

So in that context, Athletic Director Dianne Murphy and Head Coach Pete Mangurian promised us the players who had made the most offensive Tweets would be dealt with and that all the athletes would be reminded of special guidelines on social media.

So much for that.

Not a week goes by that I don’t see an ill-advised, stupid, or vulgar Tweet by a CU athlete.

Again, I’m not in favor of censoring these young men and women. And I know they’re all very young. But I have to ask: WHY THE HELL is this still going on?

Today, I saw a pic on Twitter of one of our football players lying on a bench near the Low Steps with his hand right down his pants. The picture was actually taken by another football player, so that’s a two-for-one in the dopiness department.

I honestly don’t know who should be taken to the woodshed over this; maybe no one. But it’s just another embarrassment that I don’t see the other seven Ivy schools having to deal with as much as we do.

I’d like to know why this continues to happen and whether it’s indicative of an overall issue of the administration not serving our student athletes properly. Remember that there are people on the staff who are charged with this job, who are getting paid by tuition revenue and our donations. If Columbia wants to cut these positions to save money, that’s fine. But if we’re all paying for something we’re not getting, that’s not fine.

And where is that mentoring program that Mangurian supposedly set up for the players? Aren’t any of the football alums awake enough or caring enough to tell these current players to stop making fools of themselves online?

These Tweets and other stupidity could haunt these students well past graduation. Somebody PLEASE fix this!

Raye-Redmond Announcement

In case anyone wasn’t clear about this, Lehigh has now officially announced  that Marc Raye-Redmond is a member of its incoming freshmen class.

Lehigh actually appears to put out an announcement each time a player commits to Lehgih. I don't think that Ivy admissions offices permit any sort of official announcement. PS, the young man who was flipped by Lehigh according to the announcement is going to be a DB.

PS, I meant to say that no official announcement is permitted until the player is admitted and his deposit check is received, as I recall.

It comes down to accountability. No matter what era you play in, internet or not, if a student athlete values his/her participation at the school, they keep their maturity in check. You never know who is watching you.

You know there is no accountability at Columbia when a member of the coaching staff runs amok on social media.

Pete fancies himself to be man in charge but he's a bag of wind. Nobody has respect for his leadership. If they did they would abide by the strict social media guidelines set up by the university and preached to players and staff.

The best Pete could do to exercise his authority was suspend his two best senior players for "foolishness" (Garrett and Delaney).

I honestly don't know exactly where to point the sharpest blame here. I do know that while the embarrassment of our season ended in Nov., this Twitter embarrassment seems to never end.

On a lighter note, the 27th Annual
Columbia Football Golf Outing is scheduled for Monday, May 5, 2014
Hackensack Golf Club. FINALLY, the Nathan's Hot Dog Committee can now feel a sense of worth... but only if Dianne allows it. Remember, the consensus was to allow for Grey Poupon this year. Hopefully, you can impact the football program in some way...

Jake, if athletes in other schools are not acting with impunity online then it comes down to respect. It's the same thing as shooting spitballs from the back of class because a kid either did not care he could get caught or did not feel intimidated by the consequences.

You east coasters have no idea how good you have it with Nathan's. There is nothing like that in California. We have Weinerschnitzel which is not-even-close. Ball park dogs are a different story. Those are quite good if you want to spend $15 for ONE.

Whoever invented grey poupon is a genius.

Just my opinion, Wingman, but I really like the "Omaha Steaks" hotdogs--tasty, long, thick, could call just one a meal in itself. They have retail stores all over plus mail order.
Back to football, just read the CU website story on Football Awards Banquet. Coach M finally heard from again via nice words about many worthy Lions. Some good talent graduating but that's the routine every year.
The season is only seven months away and I feel even more anticipation than usual. Besides the eternal hope for some wins, there's something extra for the program to prove this year....partially because of last year's record, partially because of fans' reaction, and partially because of Admin's non-reaction.
Something's gotta give. It'll be interesting to see what.

Why is everything that tastes so good so bad for the body/ Those omaha steaks dogs look divine but 37% saturated fat makes it a killer. Nathan's isn't much better. All i am left with is hewbrew national fat free (who knows what the filler is made of though) and Let's be Frank. Hip, Hip Hurrah for soy dogs :-/

Al- All of these these are excellent points! Please forward your concerns to the Football (Hot Dog) Committee. Just please do not overwhelm them with any relish request as they can only handle so much. And remember, everything needs to be approved by Dianne. I hope they renew everyone's tenure on the committee when they give Pete a contract extension.

Pitino is correct, but his comments really apply to everyone....no big revelation here about sports.
A dumb athlete, politician, actor, businessman will hurt himself on social media, and smart athletes, politicians, actors and businessmen will help themselves.

Thanks Wingman, I always check saturated fat and sodium content but somehow forgot to with the Omaha dogs. I am torn and don't relish this pickle. They taste so good but I'll have to cut down. Maybe instead we could chip in and send a couple of cases to the NHDC.
